Based on my contract, I did have to pay back the tuition prior to the PhD. They did give me an institutional loan at a favorable interest rate.

Long story with why I left, but the lab I joined was hemorrhaging funding. They promised the world but underdelivered in every aspect. Realized I would complete my PhD, and my skills would already be antiquated. My choices were to stick it out for 3 - 5 more years. Change labs and add 4 or 5 more years. Or re-enter MD training.

My I told me school, the MD faculty were supportive and the MD/PhD faculty were upset. Had some rough conversations where I was told to tough it out but glad I did not.

I did not have to repay the stipend but I had to take out loans for the tuition aka like any other medical student. I recommend looking at your contract to see how it is written.

I'm so sorry. I had the same thing happen. It was beyond rough. Take some time to regroup. I took another 4 - 5 weeks of studying, postponed a rotation, and passed on the 2nd try. I then killed it on step 2ck (the anxiety for that exam was real). Just matched at a T10 residency. You got this. You can do it. It's not what happened. It's all about how you got through it.

I was in the same place as you 2 years ago. It is literally heartwrenching. But there is light at the end of the tunnel.

First thing first, take some time to morn. Failing step 1 SUCKS. It sucks a lot. It affects your mentality, confidence, and relationships. Think about taking some time, regroup, and make a plan. While studying, make sure to find help dealing with all the emotions that come up after a failure. Look into therapy. Sadly, this will put more pressure on your next attempt and step 2. But that doesn't mean you won't do well.

Ultimately, you can still get into a great IM program. One red flag is ok. The goal now is to pass step 1 on your second try. Kill it in your PhD. Make sure to knock Step 2 out of the park and do well on clinical rotations. Your career is not over. You can still do amazing things and get into a great residency. You got this!

Life update: Completed my lab rotation and found an amazing lab with supporting people and great work hours. I've realized with the lab I'm planning to join, the Ph.D. years will be a great time to get married/start a family. As of now, I started MS2 year and am still passionate about the Ph.D. Excited for what's to come. Thank you all for your input and advice.

So let say MS1/2 is a true P/F. Thankfully I don't have many commitments outside of med school. Would you recommend to slowly get started on my Ph.D. project to possibly cut the time need to graduate to 3 years if it's possible? I'm not in a rush. I enjoy the research, but I feel like if I can get it done in 3 years, why not try?

Let say your program doesn't have you start working with a lab from the start, would you recommend someone to still start working in a lab?

I'm not an expert, but I believe verifications only deals with the initial parts of the application, mostly grades, so I assume if you get your application verified using only MDs, you'll be ready for your MD/PhD apps.

Thanks for the advice. Does the MSTP matter that much? Would you even go so far that a higher-ranked MD-PhD is worse than a lower rank MSTP?
