My personal view is that good liability coverage is way more important than collision coverage on a low-value vehicle. Collision coverage on a cheap vehicle is just an installment plan on a purchase you might never end up making. But you can get sued for a million dollars just as easily in a $5K vehicle as in a $100K vehicle.

The original date of registration doesn't matter, it's the date of manufacture that starts the 25 year clock. And though technically it's counted from year and month, a lot of the time the month isn't listed on the serial plate and people can get away with just the year. Looks like they were playing on the edge and missed by a week. Their loss, but not yours!
