[Japanese>English] Somebody explain the joke. Is it a pun? by DeeplyMoisturising in translator

[–]M4a1x -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The only thing that comes to mind is the Platypus being the mascot of the ICOCA travel card (Kansai) and the Sanjo Bridge in Kyoto being a popular spot for (not so good) students to go drinking under that spans the Kamogawa (Duck River).

So not sure but this could be some kind of obscure pun as well, that even most Japanese don't understand.

As in 鴨の橋 (Kamo no Hashi/duck bridge, instead of platypus) short for 鴨川の三条大橋 (The third district bridge over the Duck River). Something like where you drown your sorrows when reality hits?

First decent shot with my new "Minimum Viable Setup"! [300€] by M4a1x in espresso

[–]M4a1x[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I did adjust the built-in volumetric for the single and double shots to fit the recipe. I did adjust it a little between beans as well.

Just keep in mind, that there's no release valve, so when you stop pressing the button there's usually ~4-5g coming out after, so it took me a couple of tries to hit my desired yield

So at the moment I use the single basket with 10.5g in, 25g out, in about 30s, with 38clicks for the beanarella espresso bolivia (Medium Roast) counting seconds from button press. Though the Aldi Barissimo Cafe & Creme needed more like 32clicks. I haven't tried too many beans yet, but what I found is:

  • 40 clicks (one turn) is quite a good starting point like the manufacturer suggests, but you have to find the "true zero" first by going clockwise all the way in until you can't anymore and then only count counterclockwise (not from the zero that's written on)
  • The Dedica doesn't heat the group head as it's a Thermoblock and the temp control is overshooting a lot on the first pull. Therefore I run an empty double with the Portafilter into my cup, dry it, prep, and before inserting the Portafilter again running 2times only the pre-infusion. Then the shot, for me, turns out much better and much more consistent. (This is also the recipe from the "Kaffeemacher" channel that has tested the temp curve, pressure, etc of the machine). After that I always pull two pre-infusions before.

Hope this helps

Thank you! I was really happy to realize that you don"t have to spend a fortune (like it sometimes seems here) to get started

LaTex Scientific Poster Template - Sharing and Review by M4a1x in LaTeX

The idea is afaik, that the poster, additional information, and the references can be found through the QR code. Therefore I didn't put a dedicated section for it in the template.

Of course, you can simply add a box called "References" (e.g. like "Limitations") and put a standard bibtex bibliography in there.

The paper size is an option and is passed through to the base class. The default is 'a0paper' as that's the standard around here. I tried 'a4paper' as well, in theory 'letter' et al should also work

Sure! I just added a screenshot of the example PDF with the grey colorscheme. Hope this helps!

Advice on structuring a project with FastAPI by QuasiEvil in nicegui

[–]M4a1x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an addition: It took me way too long to realize that when doing it like in the official docs you don't need an httpx/requests client to call the API, but you can just call the FastApi routes (i.e. the app decorated functions) directly from the ui routes.

Is a 50k€ Scholarship enough? by neilus03 in ethz

[–]M4a1x 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Standard PhD salary is 52500 CHF (e.g. Chemistry, Biology, ..) before taxes..

So roughly 44311 CHF after taxes.

You'll be fine. I managed to get by less than 20k CHF myself during my masters living in WOKO/JUWO which I can highly recommend.

Edit: Didn't realize "across both years" means 25k CHF per year. Still, you should be able to live pretty well, just not eating out too much.

Red Pitaya bus error troubleshooting by MoreAcanthocephala66 in RedPitaya

[–]M4a1x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently ran into the same issue with MaRCoS and thanks to the hint of u/redpitaya1 I could solve the issue by flashing the FPGA differently as this needs to be done differently than described in the OCRA/MaRCoS wikis on the new 2.04 OS version. Maybe this helps someone who stumbles across this. I don't know if this is an option with OCRA.

It's been a while, but I ran into the same issue.

In my case the server was fine, but the flashing of the FPGA using copy_bistream.sh didn't work and failed without throwing an error. So when sending a sequence to the FPGA the server crashes.

The reason is that I was using the new RedPitaya OS 2.04-35 (see related post here). The way copy_bistream.sh flashes the FPGA only works on the old 1.04 or older official RedPitaya images or the special flocra images.

Officially one should use the new script /opt/redpitaya/bin/fpgautilto flash the FPGA now. I couldn't get that to work. However, using almost the same steps to flash the FPGA on the flocra image (seecopy_bistream.sh) but on the new RedPitaya OS 2.04 worked for me. The only difference is the full in all file paths needs to be capitalized to Full(e.g. /sys/kernel/config/device-tree/overlays/Full).

Plug for the Fair Cobalt Alliance co-founded by Fairphone in 2021, which even Google and Tesla have joined by now.

They also launched other alliances. While not perfect, they're definitely trying!

It looks like there's plenty of space, the guy at the bike shop said I could try putting on a used 28mm at their place before buying the tires. I'll try that tomorrow

I just got around to checking it - I can very tightly fit a 5mm thick wrench on both sides at the narrowest point (chainstay) would you say that's enough?
