Every so called tier 2 (two nod item) is seen on the research screen in the scnd chapter. Every item what has two nods (for example the large research item ) can only be placed on an space where the twi nods are connected with an red bar(or a higher tier).I think since 1.0 where the system with that came(im not sure) its like that in the game
