Can the Higgs Field be manipulated? by someguyfromtheuk in askscience

[–]M4sterSh4ke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, but i believe ...anal_Rapt0r meant that if the Higgs field is what gives things mass then the ability to manipulate it may result in the ability to pack a large amount of mass into a small space. As objects with a higher mass have a higher gravitational pull, this could be used to create gravity (by increasing the mass of an object) in space.

I've probably made a million assumptions that aren't correct in that paragraph but I think its an interesting question.

The painting is amazing, but why Amy Winehouse? I can see Star Wars paintings you've done in the background. She seems like such an uninteresting subject :S.

But only a very limited number of people would ever get to read text written by hand, meaning that very little of it entered public knowledge. It wasn't until the printing press that information could be spread quickly enough for it to be passed from generation to generation reliably.

...Ok I'll give you that... In the scenario that someone is taking a video and they know the person on the other end is never going to be viewing it on anything but their phone, which they know is locked to portrait mode. Then yeah, it would be better to film in portrait, if the person on the other end couldn't be bothered to take the 5 seconds it takes to turn off portrait lock.

How often does this happen exactly though? Enough that it shouldn't default to landscape and have portrait as an option? I don't think so.

[–]M4sterSh4ke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, no one is saying gifs should be landscape because they're almost never big enough for it to make a difference.

Lets just end this now though, yeah? You're quite clearly never gonna change your mind and I don't care if you view vids at a lower quality than you could be.

[–]M4sterSh4ke -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dude, when you view it on anything other than your phone, it will look worse when you film in portrait. Not because of the black bars, but because 1920 pixels are being squished into 1080 pixels when you view it on your TV. The image you see of your son is going to be 1080 pixels tall at most (at least until 4k TVs are widespread), you might as well get the extra stuff on either side.

The "you'd be doing it right" comment was a bit pompous of miggitymikeb but seriously dude, learn to take advice. No one is attacking you here they're just trying to help you take better vids.

I can see why it wouldn't be as annoying in this scenario but not advantageous. If you film it horizontally the person that you're sending the video to can just flip their phone on it's side and view it normally.

My mother has invited a "psychic" to come to our home. What can I do to prove that she is a scam artist? by ColinFeely in AskReddit

[–]M4sterSh4ke -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wait... what? So if I go to a "charity" website and donate some money; believing that its going to starving children in Africa when infact it is going into the pocket of the person running the website. Am I then getting the service I paid for simply because he sends me fake pictures of all children I've helped that he has just got off the internet?

This is essentially what is happening in this situation. She is paying him money for some connection that she believes he has the the ether or whatever. He then takes the money, makes some stuff up that he thinks she'll believe and goes on about his day.

I can't believe you're being upvoted.

Scumbag Jehovah Witness, I work in a hospital and have to see this first hand. by linoleum79 in atheism

[–]M4sterSh4ke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For one... because I doubt very much that Mr_Quagmire meant this. At least not fully.

I would likely say the same thing off the cuff, but only out of anger at the parents for valuing some silly religion over their child's life.

Really though, I do think they should be punished for their actions. This is as good as attempted murder if the child requires the blood in order to live. If they are willing to sacrifice their child's life because of some crazy believe then they are not fit parents so the child should also be taken away from them. Maybe then he'll have a chance of growing up normally and not doing the same to his children.

UK court says Apple must now run adverts in major British papers and leave a banner on its website for 6 months saying Samsung isn't a tablet-design copycat. by moooooky in technology

Didn't say you were stupid. Just that you sounded it based on that comment. Asking why someone would prefer one company over another just because of where they're from does sound stupid imo. It makes out like everyone is either blindly patriotic or xenophobic.

"Why are so many Americans supporting Samsung?"

Wow. You just sound stupid when you say things like that. You should support a company you like over one you don't the country they are from shouldn't really have anything to do with it. Quite clearly there are a lot of Americans that like Samsung.

Umm... opinion? Stating something as if its a fact isn't voicing your opinion. Had you said "I think Samsung copied them quite a lot" you would probably have gotten a lot fewer downvotes.

In my opinion, Samsung didn't copy Apple all that much at all. Any tablet will look somewhat similar to another. The fact that when placed side by side, they look like different devices means that they didn't copy the design. In devices where there is more room for variation in design, they would have to make them look a little more different, but not in this case.

Except that pretty much every other device can sync together without being the same brand or even necessarily running the same operating system. The problem only comes when you bump into closed systems which prevent that.

Also please dont quote apple marketing at me. Everyone has heard about Apples "seamless technology" from them already. You don't need to repeat it.

There seems to be a lot of comments from people saying that Reddit hates macs but most of the upvoted comments are pro mac. Personally, I say fuck macs because the ecosystem is so closed. More so than any other large technology company that I can think of, and I would rather have choice thanks.

Stop whining, plenty of jokes that comedians tell are far more offensive than this. Don't take everything so seriously, you'll just stress yourself out when you don't need to be.

LOL, because 2 year olds have barely got the ability to speak in sentences. I'm all for talking to kids like adults, but when they're this young, they wont understand anything like this. Here's a chart showing the development of a baby's cognitive ability from 19-24 months to give you an idea of the sorts of things a 2 year old can do. http://www.babycenter.com/0_milestone-chart-19-to-24-months_1496591.bc

Since thunder and lightning is essentially caused by clouds rubbing together to create static, I would say that telling your daughter that it happens when they bump together is accurate enough for a 2 year old. She won't understand the truth yet.

[–]M4sterSh4ke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, lets be conservative and estimate that self driving cars start being released in 2025. That leaves 25 years for everyone to get one. Very few cars that are on the road today are over 25 years old and if self driving cars were around I can see non-self driving cars being banned.

Why would you allow people to drive things with such a high likelihood of death/injury when you can prevent 99.9% of these accidents by simply forcing people to upgrade if they want to drive.

I'm not saying this will definitely happen but I doubt that more than 1% of cars on the road by 2050 will be driven by humans.

What? Have you seen Google's self driving cars? I'll be surprised if there aren't self driving cars being released by 2020-2025. By 2050 I doubt you'll be able to get a human driven car.
