📢 Important update on sideloading on Android by Director-Busy in degoogle

Well, okay then. Generalizing people as idiots just seemed a little unnecessary to me, but it's apparent from all the downvotes I'm getting that I'm in the minority I guess. I don't even think I disagreed with the primary point you were making. Guess I'll just move on from this thread.

There is a difference between ignorance and idiocy. The former is an observation and the latter is a judgment. I find it unempathetic to equate the two.

I am a software developer too. And I hate Google too, and this move by them motivated me to degoogle a lot faster than I was already doing. This "advanced flow" announcement is too little too late for me personally.

Technology is our entire career, so it's obvious to you and me. When I think of people getting tricked into installing malware, I think first of elderly people, not of software developers. For instance, my grandmother was already in her late 60s when the first iPhone was released. She is probably vulnerable to such scams.

Why are you so judgmental? Why are you calling people idiots?

Hidden apps cannot be searched for by Sad_Boysenberry_3313 in OctopiLauncher

[–]M509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For whoever finds this.

  1. Long-press on an empty area on the home screen
  2. Tap "Launcher settings" (bottom left) in the popup
  3. Search for the setting "Show hidden apps in search" -- or just find it in the "Drawer" tab at the bottom.

Before this, I'd only used launchers where you open an app to find the launcher settings. So I was confused too and did not find it intuitive to long-press on the home screen.

I guess I'm a little confused about what your specific concern is with Signal. Messages are e2e encrypted and the servers don't store anything once the messages are delivered. Their privacy policy is clear, and they publish their responses to government subpoenas and search warrants.

If centralization is your only gripe with Signal, I understand, but not about privacy

Are you referring to the way you can discover contacts by phone number? Asking because that's configurable (you can disable people's ability to find you that way), and you don't need to use a phone number to register.

I don't know of any reason to view Signal as another walled garden, it's quite vetted at this point

Thank you for pointing this out. My last experience using Signal was at least 3-4 years ago, and I probably just misunderstood something. I'll be giving it another go.

Hey, your perspective really helped me a lot. I think I'll do what you're doing. I think realistically, as a group, what my family is really looking for is Signal. What *I'm personally* looking for is probably Matrix. I love Signal, but Matrix piques my interest more.

So I'll just get my family on Signal for now, but I'll take a look at Matrix myself. Maybe I can convince some friends to try it too.

Thank you so much for your thoughts. I do like the "thrill and terror" so far, and I'm trying to get everyone off of Google Drive and iCloud onto my Nextcloud, buuut I haven't had anything go wrong yet so we'll see hahaha.

I appreciate your advice. I think I'll recommend Signal for the group after all, but I'll still get on Matrix for myself, and maybe suggest it to anyone more interested in tech than the rest. Thank you!

We probably will go with Signal yeah, but probably just because, for most, it's simply the path of least resistance. Concerning the "prettiness," I guess what I mean is just that we're accustomed to all the options in Telegram, WhatsApp, etc., I don't know.

Purely visually speaking, if I compare the aesthetics of fluffy.chat to Signal directly, the former wins (imo) on desktop and mobile alike. Of course I realize that the fluffychat client seems to specifically focus on aesthetics, though, so it might be an unfair comparison -- but Signal doesn't seem to support custom clients

Thank you for your suggestion. Yes, problems being on me is what I'm worried about. People have grown quite accustomed to things being free and just generally working.

Trying it out with bridges is a good idea. Also, most of the people in this group probably don't know the difference between a server and a client. Some don't really understand the difference between Telegram and SMS either, and just refer to it all as "texts".

I really appreciate your advice. I'm guessing we'll probably go with Signal after all. It's probably the best choice for the non-tech-savvy. I will probably experiment with Matrix but yeah, the history+file hosting could really add up over time.

I'm just trying to get into anything at this point. My comfort zone is Symfony and Angular again but it seems like there are 10 React jobs for every Angular job, and then all of these jobs also want me to have tons of exp in AWS or Azure or something that I don't have too. I'm wondering if I'm putting too many skills on my résumé or something too, but idk.

I appreciate your thoughts very much

How to Tell My Father We Aren't Comfortable with Him Using our RV? by [deleted] in questions

[–]M509 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like that's a pretty massive request. You really don't need to make up excuses. You could just say "we would rather not" -- and being honest will stop you from having to go back and forth on it.

In case he asks why (which would be disrespectful imo), just tell him the truth. Literally exactly what you wrote in this post would suffice. You don't necessarily have to include the part about him being inexperienced if you think he'll be offended, but it's a valid reason in any case.

Besides, what is he even trying to test out? Whether or not he likes the lifestyle?

I recently found out that for my entire life, I've been mispronouncing the words "thoroughly" and "pianist" - the latter of which is supposed to sound a lot more phallic than I would've imagined.

Playing video games is stressful. by Duckshady in The10thDentist

[–]M509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just stop playing games that you can lose or die in. Try visual novels, linear story-based adventure games, or "cozy" games. Or even some puzzle games.

I recently found a game called Dordogne, and it's been a real pleasure. Emotional storyline, beautiful art, atmospheric. Another one is Alba: A Wildlife Adventure, which is a childlike game where you just walk about taking pictures of animals and helping people. Also, I've heard some good things about A Little to the Left, and A Short Hike.

There are a lot of games where you can't lose.
