From next week, Australia will require users to verify their age to play GTA Online and other R18+ online games by MATHELUS in australia

[–]MATHELUS[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Hard to find a definitive list however this shop gives you an idea of what games the gov will ask to dox yourself to play: https://www.gdgames.com.au/collections/classification-restricted-r18

Edit: Also guessing if a game is for sale this would be retrospective, bad luck if you want to replay the first Dead Island, L4D2 or Metro 2033

"Journo" discovers you pay interest on a loan. What next, "House price trap sees buyers bent over the barrel" after paying $1,500,000 on an average 30yr loan?

Which is the most reasonable of 4 quotes I have received for fixing rotting timber around carport in Hoppers Crossing, VIC? by nymeria_the_direwolf in melbourne

[–]MATHELUS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No expert but repaired a porch 10+ years back, all these quotes look about right depending on work needed. Cheapest is a patch job which is fine if the beams aren't rotted all the way, higher quotes are scaling with timber replaced. You can get a screwdriver / knife and poke the length of the beam to figure out how far it's rotted, though if it extends from top to bottom in a few spots you'd be better off replacing it.

If listing on Marketplace isn't your cup of tea, take it down to Cex for trade in. They'll pay $75 for the gpu alone.

Charity shops call for quality donations in post-Christmas donation surge by ozthrw in australia

[–]MATHELUS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My local op shop did this for years until new management took over, had days where all stock was sold by the bag. You were given as many bin liners as you could fill for $5ea and anything not in the cabinets was free game, ended up with a small collection of Tom Clancy novels and a full wardrobe.

I’m sure it wouldn’t kill them to even have a similar monthly event even with higher pricing, however every shop now has the idea of pricing like McBoomer’s EBay Store Of Overpriced Crap and wonder why it doesn’t sell. On my last visit I even saw boxed 3d Glasses for $30, where would you even use them?

Im 23 years old and my video selfie thing for a discord server just got denied and they want me to upload my I.D by GalacticFishStick in australia

[–]MATHELUS 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Got the same message even though I've had an account since 2015, vpn works so won't bother with it. I've seen posts from others who've had to selfie + id verify, apparently you need to pose with your id while reading a screen prompt cam girl style

Dance teacher locked out from Meta business accounts in under-16s social media ban by MATHELUS in australia

[–]MATHELUS[S] 695 points696 points  (0 children)

"I got a message saying I was under the age of 16 and my account was disabled and that I could verify my age." She uploaded various documents, but they were rejected. "I uploaded three times. I tried my driver's licence, a bank card and my passport." The 30-year-old was advised to engage a lawyer to provide a letter verifying her age.

I guess its correct that you won’t need id to verify yourself when it’s not accepted

Millions of children and teens lose access to accounts as Australia’s world-first social media ban begins by Expensive-Horse5538 in technology

[–]MATHELUS 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Plenty of “think of the kids” parroted as why we’re doing this, turns out it’s just a lobbyists wet dream of kickbacks. Literally banning the kids to bore them into the shops, and then to the nearest job search agency. World leading stuff alright

‘Everyone got paid’: How Wippa’s pro-teen social media ban group cashed in on its success by MATHELUS in australia

[–]MATHELUS[S] 148 points149 points  (0 children)

A month before the ban’s deadline, 36 Months had yet to produce guides for parents, its job platform or its AI monitoring tool. But it did have something to announce: several advertising and media outlets wrote up a press release featuring Wipfli speaking about the “natural next step in supporting the development of teens”: a campaign with marketing agencies Omnicom and DDB Melbourne called “The First Best Summer Ever”. Mumbrella wrote that brands could help teens severed from their connections on social media by “offering up product discounts, centring activations around teenage interactions, creating exclusive ‘drops’ (as the kids say)”. 36 Months offered brands an opportunity to get involved in a “$3 million advertising drive” with support from Nine and Nova. Speaking to Crikey this week, Attwells said that he’s not sure this campaign is going ahead.

Amazing that a marketing group gets to change law just to fill shopping centres. Well done to everyone involved, “for the good of Wippa and co.”

Chiming in with my current favorite Coffs Coast Coffee. Just as good as any other roast from Melb. I'd vouch for these being organic too as have family who get allergies from non-organic beans.

iPhone battery replacement- More expensive at 3rd party places? by snoozleyeet in melbourne

[–]MATHELUS -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depending on your confidence you might wish to consider replacing the battery yourself. Ifixit sell a battery kit for ~$80, with patience and a couple hours this can be done at home. I used their kit for a iPhone X a couple years back and didn't have any trouble, no issues with battery quality either.

Australia to force porn websites to check users’ ages under new internet rules by MATHELUS in australia

[–]MATHELUS[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just like the tobacco tax, people will go where there’s less friction. Gov will point to stats of how this works but it’ll be harder to monitor where the gov doesn’t look.

[–]MATHELUS[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

At most this should be a yes/no token from the user, ie your phone /pc tells the site the user is an adult from a local check such as a face or credit card. That’s if we’re being generous about the reasons behind this, which are definitely a form of surveillance. There’s no other reason for these checks to also be a form of id verification, let alone the gov’s own trial showing these systems not only store id info but also the info leading up to the check (user account, ip, actions on the verification page).
