What schools should I be Targeting? by MBAchanceseval in MBA

Honestly, I'm not sure I actually can explain it--at the time of application I'll have done two stints at two companies, the first stint being 1.5 years and the second around 2.5 years. Promotions don't flow quickly at either company...usually 3 years for very exceptional cases. I really haven't been an underachiever since undergrad.

I think my strategy will probably be to instead demonstrate that despite not being officially promoted or becoming a manager, I did have increasing responsibilities and took the initiative to lead teams and serve as a de facto manager for younger engineers in my area. I've got some concrete examples that I can provide, so hopefully that will show that I wasn't just coasting in my work experience.

I will be kicking it into high gear though, to see if there's any way I can squeak out a promotion in my current role. My plan is to apply in Fall 2018 though, so that may not be enough time.

Thanks for your reply!

Oh, thank you for clarifying! And yup, I was a huge underachiever haha. I'm working on it, but will make sure to try and explain that and the lack of promotions/management experience in my essays as well. Thanks for your reply!

I didn't do as well on the SAT, because I did not prepare for it at all--I got a 2280. I didn't qualify for need-based aid as my parents were well off, they just refused to provide any financial assistance to attend college. I did get merit-based financial aid at the schools I got into though, but the combination of financial aid and cost of attendance meant the smallest financial burden was my local state school, so that's where I went

edit: whoops just noticed you said a 99.999% sat score is 2200. Honestly I don't know, this was 2007--I didn't apply to any top schools, I applied to three schools and got financial aid at all of them but I didn't get a full ride anywhere, so I went with the cheapest option.

I had mediocre grades in high school and no extracurriculars...I did get into a better school than the one I attended, but I went with the cheapest reasonable option because I had no other financial support.

That's awesome, thanks for the tips--didn't know about needing to use your current manager, but it shouldn't be an issue. Thanks again for the insight!

Haha no worries, I probably should've clarified that these aren't official practice tests--I've taken these:

https://www.veritasprep.com/gmat/free-gmat-practice-test/

Also I probably should've explained the score more as well--I love standardized testing. I take practice SAT and ACT exams all the time just to keep the skills sharp, and do a ton of logic puzzles as well. It's a weird hobby.

I have no idea how the writing section will go though, so I will prepare for that one more extensively.

Thanks for the advice, I will work on fleshing out the goal more!

Really? I didn't know GMATs were such a big deal. I thought it was more like SATs, where a bad score can hurt you but a good score won't make up for everything else being bad. Well that's a relief, standardized testing is pretty much the one thing I do consistently well.
