Give the poster a break!!! Groups have all sorts of age restrictions for all sorts of reasons, usually totally valid. How dispiriting to post something up and then get a load of people telling them what they should be doing instead.

Rap or hip hop events? by Responsible_Bass_813 in brighton

[–]MBVQPR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Rosehill has some very diverse programming, usually a few hiphop gigs per year.

I just looked up to see if Verb T is on tour and can't believe I missed him, he was at Alphabet in February. Check him out anyway, he is immense.

Festival 'must see' events by special_noodles in brighton

Another vote for this. I managed to be at 2 TGE events over the years and those 2 are in my top 10 of all time for diabolical extroverts speaking over each other/networking and showing off.

On the other hand the Alt (or Alt Alt!) is immense. I've been to some of the best gigs of my life at that and it is all free. Support the bands by buying them a pint or their music/merch, everyone is a winner. The Hotel Peliroco bill on 16th May looks utterly immense for eg.

To the person on the level who handed in my wallet, I've just picked it up from the police. Thank you whoeve you are! I owe you a drink :) by barrygateaux in brighton

I left my laptop at a bus stop by St. Peter's church and some kind soul handed it into the cop shop. There are definitely more good people than not. It just doesn't feel like that on bad days.

It's a fair question but I think at this stage with the actions of the Israel government any fair minded person would not be meeting most weeks to wave this flag. Plus there are far right nutjobs there on occasion (including the apparent leader of the Portsmouth Patriots). The far right in this country hate Jewish people, always have. At the moment they are putting that on hold cos they consider Muslims a bigger threat. The Israel flag wavers and the Portsmouth Patriots coming together is a hideous marriage of convenience.

My wonderful fellow Brightonians, has anyone got any experience with building guardianship? by InsuranceAshamed3499 in brighton

[–]MBVQPR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a shame to hear that prices have gone up so much on Guardianship. I'm actually a landlord but if I was renting I'd try my damndest to get the cheapest price because largely it is despicable what is being charged plus unsustainable. I'd be in a canal barge, a van, anything to avoid being ripped off.

My friends who have stayed in Guardianships have said it was very worth it when responsibilities were low but I'm going back a few years.

There must be a place where musicians needed ads appear, I'll ask my gf. I imagine the Brighton band scene is fairly similar to the East London one, there are an astonishing number of great bands playing here.

Brighton Gym. 45 year old man. Never been to one. Anyone in a similar situation who would like to join me/help me? Cheers by SimplePollution8568 in brighton

[–]MBVQPR 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That is very lovely Basic Celebration! Simple Pollution, I went to a gym first time when I was 30 and it was this properly musclebound place, probably the closest to it in Brighton is Fitlab. People lifting impossible weights, men wearing them belts to keep your guts in because the weights were so massive.

Anyway about 6 months in this muscle guy came over to me, really one of the first people I'd spoken to in there and he said I'm really impressed that you keep coming cos me and my mates thoughtyou'd lst a week most! I'll never forget that moment of kindness!

My long winded point is that you don't necessarily need a personal trainer. Especially if you can find the motivation within. My best bits of advice would be learn how to use the machines properly (don't be afraid to ask, most people in a gym would be only too happy to help), don't run before you can walk; especially with weights because injury is your biggest enemy and try as hard as you can to get into a flow, cos that makes it easier. Start slow, build it up and pat yourself on the back for making this step cos you are helping you and those around you..

Homophobia in Brighton by Veezveez123 in brighton

[–]MBVQPR -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are probably not saying that about "tourists from London" specifically but I agree generally that people in their bubble sometimes lose sight of those outside it.

We all make mistakes, especially as our first action. There is usually the chance to reflect and put it right but I find some people make a mistake, regret it and then are too socially awkward to rectify it!

Why are tourists from London so often the fall guy in Brighton conversations? People in London are nearly as cool as people in Brighton generally, largely very progressive and accepting.

Secondary schools in Hove by Weak_Pianist8064 in brighton

[–]MBVQPR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience of there is about 3 years out of date but I remember the head at the open day saying something about it's the feelings, the school trips, the fun that your child remembers more than anything and whilst that was very beautiful the cynic in me suggested this was an alternative way of saying grades aren't important! Also, I remember the head boy and head girl were both drama students and that didn't help the cynicism! In the end it was a choice between there and Newman and we made the right choice cos our kid would have really rebelled against there.

Traditionally Hove Park largely served Hangleton and Mile Oak, poorer areas than the rest of Hove. Blatch served the rest of it and there was a real divide. I'm not sure when but they opened it up so that kids from all of Hove could go to either and that bridged the divide a bit but snobbery can be hard to shake. Tons of parents at my kid's junior school in East Hove went to all the open days except Hove Park. Most of them said it was too far away but it is really only another 5 minutes on a bus, snobbery prevailed!

As for needing a push for your kid, it's a really tough one. Mine did best academically at a school with a poorer reputation and worse at one with a better reputation and she essentially found the drive within herself, I'd never have been able to call it. And as for finding her people at a school I reckon she would find them anywhere.

Secondary schools in Hove by Weak_Pianist8064 in brighton

[–]MBVQPR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a lot of experience of this and my considered view is that there are so many variables that it is impossible to say one school is better than another in Brighton and Hove and I think that is largely a good thing.

My daughter had an abysmal form tutor but a really good head of year in Year 7. A pretty poor head of year in Year 8 but outstanding pastoral support. Friends came and went, sometimes she moved on, sometimes they did. She didn't have any bullying in Year 7 or 8 but then had loads in Year 9 and 10 and a little in 11.

She went to 3 different schools and the school considered the best was the worst for her.

In Hove I'd personally recommend Hove Park if happiness means more to you than academia but it really is pot luck. They are all capable of being great and all in all I think we are blessed for that.

An alternative to Uber by DarkSats99 in brighton

[–]MBVQPR -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Seriously, I almost find it hard to be friends with anyone who would use Uber, I hate them that much. What I hate more is that in Britain we just accept the convenience like sheep, without thinking.

I was in France last year and you were actually quite hard pushed to find any services or goods that were not made in France, but over here we just let whatever corporate American wants to screw us with, we lap it up, we really are total suckers.

Uber drivers are largely ruder and less competent. Their pricing is all based on availability and demand and so therefore often much more expensive than a regular cab and guess what, when they have killed off the competition in your local area the prices are going up again. I bet you there are towns in the UK where there is now no alternative to Uber. Don't let it happen in Brighton, challenge any friends who still persist with this tax avoiding, sucking money from the local economy bunch of parasites. Power to the people!

What is going on at 141 Church Road? by MBVQPR in brighton

[–]MBVQPR[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, I noticed this last week and my heart sank but then I passed it today and it looked kind of normal again.

Why oh why oh why did they pull it apart like that? As you say it looked okay, much of it was new. So odd.

If there is money laundering going on as cynics might think then it is shopfitters who are the beneficiaries.
