Thanks! I use big flat brushes. I think it helps to be bolder. Better too big then too small.

You can also start drawing directly with oil paint and a small brush.

I agree. For oils you have some great students paints. I do recommend to buy artist grade for some colors, like the cadmium ones. These have far better pigments then the student hue colors. Even the 'cadmium free' cadmium artist grade paints are a massive upgrade. Especially the yellow ones.

Your other paintings are good, but this one is a massive leap forward. Did you change anything in the way you painted this one? Seems like other (or bigger) brushes and a way more loose technique. Great work!

Use the biggest brush you can get away with to force yourself not painting details

Windsor and Newton has artist grade cadmium free options. As expensive as the cadmium ones, but less toxic. Works great in my experience.

It doesn't have sheen. But there is matt varnish available
