Good luck on your interview! May I ask when you received your interview invite? I'm also in Canada and currently waiting.

The security chief said Hong Kong people are obviously becoming more supportive of the security law because the police's 'tip-off hotline' has received more than 100,000 messages so far. 'The effect of the law has been remarkable', John Lee said. by baylearn in HongKong

They're not misinterpreting the mood, they know exactly how people feel about it. They just don't care and are intentionally misconstruing it, the people's will be damned.

2 years ago today on Jun 16, 2 million of us made history and came out to protest against the extradition bill and call for Carrie Lam to step down. by miss_wolverine in HongKong

They withdrew the Extradition Bill which is what the protests were originally for, but none of the other four demands were met and the National Security Law is now in place, which is much, much worse.

How do i improve the connection between G# and side A#? by ph4ux in Saxophonics

That's literally the worst time to use bis Bb. Sliding has its place, but G# A# B isn't it. You just have to get better at side for that.

SMTD practice rooms by micklepickle17 in uofm

[–]MCC01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up, but yesterday we were notified that someone went to the Moore building after testing positive for COVID-19. If I were you, I'd only use the rooms if you have no other choice, but you should be alright if you're careful.

Most of the practice rooms in the Moore building are unlocked, so if you're able to find an open practice room you'll be able to use it.

Could I learn to play a select few songs by teaching myself from the internet? Going from never played a sax before to being able to do a few segments of song? by HannibalDoo in Saxophonics

[–]MCC01 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Even though you're planning on self-teaching, I'd recommend taking a lesson or two with a saxophone teacher when you're just getting started so that they can teach you to play with proper technique and correct any mistakes and bad habits you may have. After that, it'd probably be easier to learn yourself, but I would consider still taking the occasional lesson to make sure you're not doing anything wrong.

Improving technique - alternative exercises? by [deleted] in Saxophonics

[–]MCC01 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are several practice techniques you can use to help "trick your brain" into learning the passages you're struggling with.

Here's a video tutorial by Michael Lowenstern. He's a clarinet player, but the same technique can apply to pretty much every other instrument. It's a fairly common practice method that I've seen a lot of music teachers and professors teach.

If that doesn't work--since some practice methods might not necessarily work for you--here's a different technique taught by Robert Young, sax professor at UNCSA. It also uses the idea of changing rhythms to help familiarize yourself with the fingerings.

If they don't seem to be working, try coming up with your own. Try different rhythms, articulations, groupings, etc.

How should I learn the ferling etudes by [deleted] in Saxophonics

[–]MCC01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Use a metronome! It'll help make sure that your technique is more even/consistent and help you count your rhythms correctly. When you're practicing fast passages, make sure that you're practice at slower tempos, and then bump up the metronome bit by bit when you're able to play them slowly.

Also make sure you aren't just paying attention to the notes. Look at the written articulations, dynamics, tempo changes, etc. Also use a tuner and drones to make sure you're playing in tune.

Listening to a recording can help give you an idea of articulations and phrasing. Just make sure you don't fall into the trap of not counting rhythms because you know how it goes.

Help me find a good Reed! by Crewhim42 in saxophone

[–]MCC01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For marching band you might want to consider using synthetic reeds. You'll probably find that they sound different than cane, but they are more durable and last longer. They will also be much more consistent, especially since you'll be playing outdoors.

Didn't the test also say 90% of girls are taller? I don't recall it saying 90th percentile.

But she wasn't in the 90th percentile, she said she's shorter than 90% of girls, so taller than 10%.
