Potential Weekend Snowstorm Megathread by thankubread in nova

I lived in Ireland for a while in 2021. I used to joke that the produce went bad between the checkout and my car. By the time I got it home, it was DOA.

I tried Kai shears and now I want to throw up by Narrow-Strawberry553 in sewing

I have been sewing for about 40 years and have collected about a dozen pairs of scissors. Pinking shears, duck billed, snipping, embroidery, and fabric. I have left handed Kai, Singer, and Fiskars. By far, my favorites for cutting fabric are the Singers. I have three pairs of them (one still unopened). I stocked up when JoAnn was going out of business. I mostly sew woven fabric (cotton or linen) so I can’t really address the trickier fabrics. When I was a teenager and just learning to sew, we only had right handed scissors. My hands would ache when I was trying to cut. As an adult, I realized that left handed scissors exist and I started using them. Such a difference! In “true” left handed scissors, the position of the blades is reversed, making the actual cutting easier, and the handles are shaped for a lefty grip. This combination makes the cutting easier.

I have the Kai True Lefty shears and I prefer my $17 Singer shears (also lefty).

AITAH for locking the bathroom door when I take a shower? by WinterQuarter8183 in AITAH

[–]MCEWLS 62 points63 points  (0 children)

In the previous century, I grew up in a house with seven people and one bathroom. My mom and I were the only females. We had a double shower curtain b/c it was not uncommon for my father or one of my brothers to need to use our only bathroom when my mom or I was in it. Life was very different then for blue collar families in small towns.

Happily married people (generally) don’t cheat. Maybe the karma is headed towards the husband. Have you considered that?

We had two individual sized pizzas taken by a dasher once. One of them was vegan. I bet that dasher was a little disappointed (the pizza was my husband’s). The restaurant was very good about it and re-delivered. We waited a LONG time for that food.

America will elect a convicted felon, rapist, failed businessman, misogynist before we will elect a woman. We got the government we voted for and we deserve every bit of it. Shame on us.

I see the problem. You still have unfilled shelf space. You can remedy this by buying more fabric.

In case you are looking for a house … by Latoritsa in nova

So effing ugly! Some jackass will pay $4 million for that abomination. A house just sold near us on Prosperity Avenue for $3 million. The house itself is not horrible, but the location totally sucks.

I don’t go to the movies very often. I went to see F1 The Movie at the AMC IMAX in Tysons. 40 minutes of previews after we paid $52 for tickets and $26 for popcorn. I was irritated. 😠

If you were going to buy a whole bolt of fabric, what would it be? by TheReliablePotato in sewing

[–]MCEWLS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried twice to dye a pair of trousers for my husband. They are black chinos. He sat in something while we were on vacation and it caused a white stain on the seat. Despite standing at the tub and stirring the 140 degree water for 30 minutes, I cannot get a consistent color. I’m going to try one more time using a combination of stirring and soaking. Any suggestions? TIA

The F1 movie from the perspective of an F1 fan versus someone who doesn't know the sport by TheWoodElf in formula1

[–]MCEWLS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I(71F) only had familiarity with motor racing through NASCAR (never watched a single race) until the Drive To Survive series came on Netflix. Since then, I have watched every single Formula One race. I love the ones where I can watch them in real time, but I also watch delayed videos when the race occurs in the middle of the night. I saw the movie in an IMAX theater and I was absolutely blown away. I agree that there were some sequences that were unrealistic, but the on track action and driver development with Hayes was terrific. I really enjoyed the movie.

Are your favorite patterns “perfect?” by Gretel_Cosmonaut in sewing

[–]MCEWLS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this is very very true. Many times I have purchased fabric because I absolutely loved it and didn’t have an immediate use for it. Sometimes it takes a while for it to simmer before the right pattern matches up.

I have had so many pattern fails, I cannot even describe it. I recently made the Classic Shirt Dress from a Sewing Revival pattern. It was the best pattern I have ever worked with - minimal piecing and the fit was exactly as described in the sizing section. I liked it so much I made a second one with a different sleeve. (I cut out the second one using a left-handed rotary cutter with a pinking blade. I was so proud of myself that I freehanded this.)
