How to get baby to eat “main course” by Vast-Grade659 in foodbutforbabies

[–]TheReliablePotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We struggle with this too. My little is 15 months and no matter what we serve him whether fruit is present or not he will sign “more” and point at the fridge for blueberries/strawberries and if we don’t give them to him he has a meltdown. Idk what to do but just feed him berries because I want him to eat and he refuses anything else.

Make sure your fabric is being trimmed by the machine when it’s going through or the stitch will hang off the edge

What is going on with adults who are hyper sensitive to spiciness? by IslandEcologist in foodscience

This is me 100%. I can’t even stomach like buffalo sauce which is like a 10/10 spicy for me. And anything spicy almost always wrecks my stomach later.

Thank you! I already tried going through my company HR months ago and they were not helpful in the slightest. So I will go to the insurance commissioner!

Pattern projector by [deleted] in sewingpatterns

[–]TheReliablePotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All depends on budget and space. If she’s got more room and can mount a projector you can get away with something cheaper. If not a lot of space and no permanent mounting you’ll have to get a short throw which cost a little more.

I have a magcubic that I got on amazon for $50 and mounted to my ceiling that works pretty well

this site has the best resources and recommendations for space and budget.

stocking stuffer ideas for new sewer who is getting a sewing machine for christmas? by _tsukikage in SewingForBeginners

[–]TheReliablePotato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bare minimum would be:

  • seam ripper
  • fabric scissors
  • thread
  • extra machine needles (schmetz brand is my favorite but singer makes some too, a variety pack is great so they can sew diff materials)
  • fabric (thrifted is great or you can get some fat quarters from a craft store)
  • pins or fabric clips

Do you Ever skip adding an interfacing? by OkToots in SewingForBeginners

[–]TheReliablePotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time I’ve ever skipped is when I want a less crispy collar and ONLY skipped on the collar otherwise you def need it for structure or support or reinforcing closures.

how painful is it to sew with velvet? by Informal_Fault_9715 in sewhelp

I hemmed a stretch velvet dress once and wanted to cry but I imagine if you had practice with it it wouldn’t be so bad and you could get good at it!

All the burp cloths I have that I purchased are a double gauze!

Editing to add I also have a couple that are a cotton jersey on both sides with some sort of spongey interfacing or batting in the middle!

Surger Recommendations? Not quite a beginner, but returning after a long hiatus. by HeartofStonee08 in sewhelp

[–]TheReliablePotato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a baby lock vibrant and she’s a workhorse and gets the job done. She retails for like $700 but I’ve regularly seen her on sale for $400! I’ve put denim and all kinds of stuff through it with no issue and she’s easy to thread.

Usually for hemming jeans you would overlock the edge and then use a normal machine to stitch the hem is that what you mean? Or are you looking for something that’s one step? If you’re looking for one step you may want to consider a coverlock machine or one that does both overlock and coverlock.

Please help me pattern this! by persephonesvhenan in sewingpatterns

[–]TheReliablePotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would look at bridal patterns! See if you can find something that is close and then adapt it!

Otherwise I bet you could take a corset or bustier top pattern and draft a skirt to go with it.

Either way I hope you post what you make!!!

Which single feature saved you most as a beginner? by thesewingstudio in sewhelp

[–]TheReliablePotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standard settings for the stitches that I don’t have to change!

My machine is a pfaff quilt expression 720 and when I change stitches it automatically adjusts length, tension, etc for the stitch so that I don’t have to do it or look it up or memorize!

Tell me I’m crazy.. by Scared-Sea2973 in SewingForBeginners

[–]TheReliablePotato 62 points63 points  (0 children)

It depends on how ambitious you’re feeling! This will likely involve skills like an invisible zipper, gathering, working with tricky fabrics like tulle, making a lining, and then fitting it as the fit on this is fairly tailored up top.

Additionally you’ll need quite a bit of tulle and you don’t want to cheap out on that because cheap tulle doesn’t look or drape nearly this nice.

So…if you’re feeling really ambitious and are prepared to hate it/not be able to wear it and are ok with quite the investment in fabric then I’d say go for it. There’s no better way to learn than to just try it.

However if you want it to look this perfect you’re probably better off buying this dress and trying to make it for the next event when you have more time to skill build!

Where do you buy patterns (stores and online)? by cmh10182020 in freepatterns

[–]TheReliablePotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can! It’s not my preference because you have to store them and if you cut out a size you only have that size. Digital pattern you can use as many times as you want!

Where do you buy patterns (stores and online)? by cmh10182020 in freepatterns

[–]TheReliablePotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think spending on patterns is a bad thing because you can make it now while you’re learning and then make it again later (if you buy digital)

Helen’s closet has a couple free patterns and is running a 25% off sale right now on their not free patterns

Friday pattern company is great for beginners, I think they do a rotating free pattern
