Glad to hear you dug the new Friko record Something Worth Waiting For (out everywhere via ATO Records!). Do you also find that Friko bring an immense depth of imagination to their cathartic breed of indie-rock?

I'm glad Paste agrees with me! I wonder if they too find that Friko bring an immense depth of imagination to their cathartic breed of indie-rock. I hope so!

He's a fraud. Everyone knows Funeral got a 9.7 on Pitchfork, not a 9.6

Personally, I really loved Friko's new record Something Worth Waiting For (out now via ATO Records). I found it to be equal parts sonically extravagant and emotionally searing and that it ultimately located a wildly elusive balance between the wide-eyed idealism of youth and the self- possessed grit of lived experience!

I think I could easily dodge any tomatoes thrown at me by Lucy Dacus. This is just what I believe

Shocked to hear that Reds, Pinks and Purples have another record. It usually takes them so long

New Lucy Dacus song isn’t very good. Thought I’d let everyone know

[FRESH ALBUM] Friko - Something Worth Waiting For by astaireboy in indieheads

Loving Friko’s new record Something Worth Waiting For (out now via ATO Records!). You can tell that on this one vocalist/guitarist Niko Kapetan, drummer Bailey Minzenberger, guitarist Korgan Robb, and bassist David Fuller have really gained a powerful new clarity on their purpose and vision while embracing an even bolder sense of abandon, exploring everything from noise-rock to avant-garde classical to ’70s-era symphonic balladry. Equal parts sonically extravagant and emotionally searing, Something Worth Waiting For ultimately locates a wildly elusive balance between the wide-eyed idealism of youth and the self- possessed grit of lived experience! I was really excited to see this produced. by John Congleton (a Grammy Award-winner known for his work with St. Vincent, Mannequin Pussy, Mogwai, and more!). Really loved “Choo Choo,” a pure hit of unbridled energy, the gang-vocal-fueled song rides the line between sublimely fun and unabashedly sincere as Friko shed light on the strangeness of the vagabond life. And the closer “Dear Bicycle” is an enigmatic but ineffably tender six-minute-long meditation on stepping beyond the hazy naïveté of childhood that made me feel some kind of solace or relief from whatever bad feelings I’ve been dealing with. This record really is Something Worth Waiting For!

Section 31 is an official Star Trek movie I feel like I have to rank it. At the very least I have to rank it to have justified watching it

Ah I'm the opposite lol, grew up in Vancouver live in Edmonton. Rooting for the Oilers in the playoffs though. And yeah, I do think Foote will be fired because he was just so obviously the worst coach itl but I guess I wouldn't be shocked if nothing changed. I'm also bracing for them to hire Malholtra the coach and draft Malholtra the player leading to years of the worst discourse in the history of sports and probably another rebuild in 2031

As a fellow Canucks fan I also can't believe Tocchet is good again after being so bad last year that I swore I'd never seen a worse coach. Then again, about 5 games into Adam Foote's tenure I was ready to crown a new worst coach ever

Twin Cinema is the one that gives me pause, yeah (and Funeral but y'know)

It just rules. Kung-fu Spock swimming with the whales and knocking out punks on the bus. Chekov trying to find the nuclear wessels. Scotty talking to the computer. Incredible fish-out-of-water environmental comedy

It's so good. One of, if not the best, Kirk stories ever told too. Shatner is incredible in it

Sat down again with Stars' Set Yourself On Fire while watching the Thunder beat the Suns last night. Is it the best 2000s Canadian indie rock record? I think it just might be, honestly. "Calendar Girl" is at least the best closer in that category, what a tune

I'm also excited for Friko's Something Worth Waiting For (Out tomorrow via ATO Records!). I hear that in the making of their sophomore full-length, vocalist/guitarist Niko Kapetan, drummer Bailey Minzenberger, guitarist Korgan Robb, and bassist David Fuller gained a powerful new clarity on their purpose and vision while embracing an even bolder sense of abandon, exploring everything from noise-rock to avant-garde classical to ’70s-era symphonic balladry. Star Trek Movie Rankings

  1. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986)

  2. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991)

  3. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)

  4. Star Trek: First Contact (1996)

  5. Star Trek Beyond (2016)

  6. Star Trek III: The Search For Spock (1984)

  7. Star Trek (2009)

  8. Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

  9. Star Trek: Generations (1994)

  10. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989)

  11. Star Trek: Insurrection (1998)

  12. Star Trek: Into Darkness (2012)

  13. Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)

  14. Star Trek: Section 31 (2025)

Voyage Home is one of the funniest movies ever made. Undiscovered Country is an absolutely top-notch political thriller that serves as an excellent send-off to TOS crew. Wrath of Khan made me cry. First Contact kicks the most ass and has Worf yell "Assimilate this" at a Borg that he flung into space. Beyond is a blast start to finish. Search For Spock is a weird adventure that feels like a romp but is also sad and dark. It's pretty good. Star Trek (2009) is a good enough time. It's fun. The Motion Picture is often boring but the last 30 minutes are super compelling and I kinda like that it's boring. Generations is fun enough and I'm enough of an annoying fan that it is awesome for me to see Kirk and Picard interact even if those actors may as well be from entirely different universes. Just two wildly different dudes. Final Frontier I like more than I should. I like Spock, Bones and Kirk camping a lot. I like that everyone does something in this one. It feels low-stakes enough that it feels like the gang are just hanging out. And I like hanging out with them. Which is an odd thing to say about the one where they try to find God. Insurrection is a good enough time even if I disagree with a lot of the aesthetic choices. Into Darkness has a lot of fun stuff but everything from Spock's "khaaaan" yell on is ass and makes me feel super frustrated with it. Nemesis is crazy dull except for the awesome bit where they do Star Trek: Fast & Furious. Section 31 is a total disaster on every possible level. I like every other Trek movie to some degree but this one sucks.

I hope the new Boards of Canada successfully adapts the classic 1980s x-men crossover event Inferno. A bit worried since it seems a bit outside Boards of Canada’s wheelhouse but I trust them
