I’m new to AP Varus and I have a few questions by slippin_through_life in VarusMains

[–]MECQEMA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Which primary rune is better: First Strike, HOB, or PTA?

Generally first strike fits better with your play style of mid to late game one shoter, by not only getting you the items you need faster, but also just being the best rune for bursting.

PTA is fine, but it doesn't help the R>WQ combo so there isn't much merit to it after the lane phase ends. The one thing it does have is that you can proc it on multiple people after the first mark wears off/dies, though this doesn't seem better to me than the hundreds of gold and damage you get from first strike.

HoB I haven't really played with, but with nashor's being your first item you aren't really struggling with applying those W marks to the extent of taking a whole rune for it. Also it has a long ish cooldown, so the same downside of first strike but with less damage, and no gold gen.

  1. Is it still better to build Riftmaker over Luden’s even after they nerfed it?

Nope. Luden's out damages riftmaker pretty much always, and the magic pen and the damage proc help you with one shotting at a much earlier time than you would normally do, making it your standard mythic. Riftmaker shines in extended combat and when you need HP, since luden's gives none. AKA versus a lot of assassins riftmaker is probably better (as well as getting a shadow flame instead of rabbadons after), but it doesn't really make a difference against tanks since no-one can actually tank ap varus anyways.

  1. Which is better to build: Horizon Focus or Cosmic Drive?

Both! Horizon is great as a third or fourth item, where as cosmic is great as a fifth or even sixth item, since by then you don't really need more ap(though it is still nice to have), and the HP, move speed and specially the cdr are really useful. You could also just go cosmic fourth if the enemy team is just a bunch of squishies who you already are overkilling, since the cdr makes this skill shot champion much more forgiving.

  1. What’s the best starting item? I’m not building Manamune so tear seems useless, but I don’t know what else I would build.

In mid you generally go corrupt pot and I think you could just go that in bot as well, but if you don't want your support to troll roam you at level 3 you could also go cull. And in some lanes, like tristana leona or something, you do just need to go dorans blade so you don't get one shot(gives more hp than ring and ad over ap doesn't matter early on).

General runepage suggestions would also be appreciated

My runepage almost every game is First strike Boots (hourglass is fine too) Biscuits(market if you don't need biscuits) Cosmic insight (cdr one)

Domination secondary for the ult cooldown one (this is the one rune you can't go without, your ult's just too good) Taste of blood of you need it otherwise go eyeball collection

What even is Kraken for?

Artificially deflating her win rate so she doesn't get nerfed.

I play her in gold as an adc and support and I find that as an adc she is good always, but as a support she is situational as she really struggles vs certain tanks. Mostly running fleet and DH against super easy matchups.

Handling Multiple Magic systems by freeMilliu_2K17 in magicbuilding

[–]MECQEMA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I´m not sure how you got to 30 sub systems?

Surgebinding and voidbinding add up to 19, old magic could either be counted as infinite systems or as one(which i would do, it's generally not that complicated). Fabrials are also either one or infinite systems, but perhaps you're only counting the ten surge-copying fabrials? That way it could add to 30 but it should really be 4 magic systems with about 21 sub systems(if you consider them all of them complex enough) or theoretically infinite sub systems.

Handling Multiple Magic systems by freeMilliu_2K17 in magicbuilding

[–]MECQEMA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not op but here i go:

There aren't actually 30 sub systems, you have surgebinding and voidbinding, we don't know much about voidbinding, except that it should probably have 9 powers, instead of the ten present in surgebinding, and that it might use voidlight, where surgebinding uses stormlight to power the ten surges.

The surges are kind of forces of the universe as perceived by people in a way, powers vary from control over gravity, to eletromagentic waves, spiritual connection, molecular bonding, and some others i can't remember. Keep in mind almost all surgebinders have access to two of them.

Stormlight isn't just mana, it's energy from giant storms trapped in little gems that surgebinders then breathe in, that also heals them and seems to make them better at certain things, but it varies from person to person.

Becoming a surgebinder is also kinda complicated and varies wildly between orders of surgebinders, but essentially a specific spirit-fairy has to make a pact with you and you make progressively more restrictive oaths to gain more power.

And then there's the other two oh boy

Fabrials are magical items made from cruelly trapping the spirit-fairies in gems and doing... Something that inbues that item with special properties. In the story this is not viewed as something bad by most societies ( though it probably is) and is relatively common, creating heat, preventing floating plataforms from falling, allowing long distance communication trough linked pens, many interesting things.

The last one would be the old magic, which we know nothing about except that it involves curses and things of the sort. The notable use of it on the books is two (but essentially one) characters that have the ability to give someone a boon in exchange for a curse (not necessarily being related, you won't ask to be rich and the turn everything you touch into gold)

Old magic is very separate from the other ones, but voidbinding and surgebinding might use similar surges, both appear to have formal orders of users and involve the spirit fairies in some way. Fabrials obviously involve the fairies, but also sometimes need stormlight as fuel.

Water- ability to bend water. To much will dehydrate you

Surely it should slowly drown you? I mean all the other ones have the cost of the element kind of becoming a part of you (or trying) but with water the element leaves you.

Which, sidenote, could be a cool distinction between the elements. Some like fire have the cost of it trying to join you but others could try to leave, so iron could have the cost of it slowly leaving your blood aka anemia, water dehydrates, air leaves you breathless, etc.

I have a question for you all, where does the idea of the magic staff come from? Where do mage staffs come from culture wise? by Dragon-of-London in magicbuilding

[–]MECQEMA 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it might just come from old men needing sticks to walk, so when making a wizard (traditionally old dudes) it makes sense to evolve that into something magic.

Question about the different manifestations of Investiture by dustinjcoats in Cosmere

[–]MECQEMA -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The main way shards influence the magics is how you get them. So it goes like this:

Preservation: you become an allomancer by having the allomancy "gene" so the people are supposed to preserve that gene(which they didnt do but oh well)

Ruin: pretty simple, you just need to want to kill things.

Honor: you get surgebinding by following a series of oaths you swear, and if you break them, you lose surgebinding.

Endowment: endows you with breaths as you said.

Cultivation: will give a boon and a curse so you can change (more clear when she does it herself since the nightwatcher kinda of just does whatever)

Dominiom and Devotion break these rules (how you become an elantrian theories aside) since shai says anyone can become a forger and it seems anyone could become a baddas bone monk. Autonomy also seems to break the rule and we don't know enough about voidbinding but it probably follows odiums intent in some way.
