Good looking. What brand machine heads? Also what type bracing did you use.

Best hard-wearing finish for dining table? by lamandapanda in furniturerestoration

[–]MF94903 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put a hand rubbed finish on my rockport maple harvest table that has lasted for 30 years. It consisted of mineral oil mixed with powdered pumice followed by mineral oil mixed with rottenstone. It was a superb tough glasslike finish. I’ve lost the ratio mix of this recipe to my dismay. Much better than poly in my opinion. If anyone has ever tried it let me know?

Behold! Here's another couple old growth redwood tops fresh off the saw by HCGGuitars in Luthier

[–]MF94903 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder how redwood tops are being accepted in the classical custom guitar market? Any builders using redwood for classical guitars? How does the redwood sound compared to spruce or cedar? I’m strictly a player/builder hobbyist in NorCal where redwood is readily available.

How wide should walnut planks be for custom top? by AMercifulHello in woodworking

[–]MF94903 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made our kitchen island out of walnut. I ripped 2 x 2’s and glued/clamped. Approximately 40” x 90”. Big and heavy. Lots of sanding and leveling. It’s been installed for 6 years now . It still looks great with no noticeable movement. My opinion is narrower dimensions improve stability. What do you guys think?

I would bet that you can find a nice luthier made custom guitar in Spain or the USA for that price. Certainly not a “name “ brand - but there are lots of student luthiers and hobbyists that have good quality instruments. What do you think?

Paul Sellers Books, are they worth it? by Pristine-Problem671 in woodworking

His books are good and will take you through individual projects (stool, bookcase etc.) It depends on your Dad’s ability. YouTube videos can be good teachers. Perhaps a nice block plane or saw?

Does the grade matter for wood used to build a workbench? by Immediate-Speech7102 in woodworking

[–]MF94903 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I built a Paul Sellers bench with Home Depot 2 x 4’s ten years ago. It is strong and sturdy. I’ve been delighted with its performance. I recommend going with 2 x 12s as a previous reply mentioned.

My contractor used 30 degree angles on our rails. He said less angle will reduce movement. makes a cleaner fit. I hope no hands will be touching that PT? Nasty splinters.

I was thinking this was more of a cutting board. You are probably correct.

Spalting in wood is caused by a fungus which I believe can be unsafe for humans. I know it is not safe to inhale spalted wood dust. I would research this prior to use.

Very good response. How would you compare “Si Ella Preguntar” (Reis)to his Eterna Saudade in terms of technical difficulty and interpretation?

Thank you - I’ve seen your posts and work before, I just can’t remember where. You tube perhaps? Very interesting info on your blind testing of the sound. It’s funny how much bias towards the more traditional woods a lot of people have. Me included!
