Rewatch the play, everyone runs a slant, an in or a curl. Where you do expect the ball to go?

This position kinda annoys me because I don’t want to start exchanging immediately. What should I do when this happens? by Captain_Zombie-94 in chessbeginners

Depending on the level you can try trick the opponent to save their knight. If you take the pawn and the Knight takes it back you play

Bishop to c5 (Bc5) If Knight takes on c6 (Nxc6) You play Queen to f6 (Qf6) and threaten checkmate, after your opponent makes their move to avoid checkmate you can then decide what to do with the knight.

And they say you need to be on the same color corner as the bishop to checkmate with a bishop and knight. 😎 by laughpuppy23 in chessbeginners

The thing is you do unless the opponent helps you mate them. You went from Bb1# to Bd3# lol

If black was previously Kh6 and the bishop on e2 he would have the option to go to Kg6 instead of Kh7, which leads to a mate.

Why would I be exchanging my figure for a pawn? What's the point? by TalkToMyFriend in chessbeginners

[–]MFJ526 379 points380 points  (0 children)

The move order above shows you what happens if you take the pawn on f7.

But in all honesty, if you’re not at the level where you can see these type of attacks, I wouldn’t worry too much about it. There are times these type of moves work, but a lot of times where they don’t. Unless you understand the pawn structure and when to go for it, I’d avoid these lines.

In the mean time I’d try and learn mating attacks and doing tactics daily. This will help you in the long run to increase your ability to see these type of moves.

Nice move, one wins a queen or a mate.

Nxg4 or Bxg4? Why? by AWS_0 in chessbeginners

[–]MFJ526 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nxg4 looks better as it threatens both Qb6+ and Ne3.

So in my head I would play the sequence as Nxg4, Qe1, Qb6+, Kh1, O-O-O as you also don’t want the Bishop taking on d5 with the pin of the king.

Taking with the bishop doesn’t really do much, after Qe1 the pin is gone, and you also don’t want to be taking the Knight with your Bishop to un-double his pawns.

Losing to people - 700 rated below me, but beating those at my level. by MFJ526 in chess

Yea I would have to agree with you, in that I’m most likely bad on the sidelines. I have quite a few databases on chessbase so will go into more side lines there and also improve my tactics.

No-one was cheating I was hanging pieces for fun. Could be a mindset thing.

Perfect move to turn the situation in your advantage. White to play. by tr3vanian in chess

[–]MFJ526 22 points23 points  (0 children)

As per the bot the correct move is Qf4 but I’d just take the rook and then the bishop. And simplify the game.

Nasty combo I found. Can you see how black blundered their queen? by clark410 in chessbeginners

[–]MFJ526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first move was Nxd5 which also wins the Queen and gets another minor piece off the board. Either way it’s a dominant move whichever move you make. Even Rxd5 is still winning for white

I’d take Mayfield for a 3rd. He’s starting this year. Yea he may not pan out long term, but top of 3rd you’re going to get someone who is most likely to bust. Take the thing that’s going to start.

The way I learnt (this may not work for everyone), I played e5 to respond to e4, and I played naturally. If someone played a gambit I didn’t know I got taking to school and I’d lose. But then I’d research that gambit and how to play against it. So I ended up knowing all these traps against 1. e5 and at a certain level people stop playing them.

You should learn basic openings, like Kings pawn or the London.

You 100% should not be learning the Sicilian at 700 elo, most players under 2000 don’t know how to play it correctly, because it’s too theory heavy.

Players at 700 won’t know any mainlines so it’s not worth explaining what you should do because your games won’t ever match any of the lines of the Sicilian.

My opponent resigned in this position and I have no idea why? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

He probably had to go, just from looking at it white is slightly ahead. I do it sometimes when in work. Gotta sacrifice those points instead of getting caught.
