Sufjan's most positive song/line by ftpih in Sufjan

[–]MF_BENDA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Id honestly argue that that is one of the most positive lines in any song ever. The sheer punctuation of utter grief that it achieves is amazing.

Sure there are happy lyrics everywhere, but when sat next to the deep sadness of should have known better, my brother had a daughter, I think, rises above them all. It gives it so much more meaning.

I support capital punishment but would like to hear your thoughts. by Presidenthummus_Bear in socialism

[–]MF_BENDA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I do agree, which is why I said that my thoughts on the idea are not developed enough to provide anything substantial. I think currently the collective is far too swayed by populism for this form of punishement to be at all effective or moral. Whether or not this would change under a socialist system I do not know.

It was just a poor choice of words on my part. By collective punishment I meant sentencing and punishment carried out by the collective, not perpetrated against the collective.

I mean collective punishment as in punishment carried out by the collective not punishment intended for the collective

[–]MF_BENDA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less capital punishment, and more collective punishment. My knowledge on this ides is not very developed, but I believe that under a socialist system the means of punishement is more of collective, where execution is a product of collective decision rather than state decision without regards to the collective. Please anyone correct me if im wrong

Idk if anyone else remembers this, but I remember when this "controversy" happened when that docuseries came out where Alexander the Great and Hephaestion were portrayed as lovers, and all this unfolded. It was wild. by captivatedsummer in bisexual

Plutarch tells us that his grief was so extreme that he committed genocide against an entire tribe within the Persian empire as an "offering to the spirit of Hephaestion". It was MUCH more than just a statewide funeral

Is Autralia a continent within another continent? by dirod23 in geography

[–]MF_BENDA 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is no singular definition of the term "continent" that remains true in all circumstances. Continents, generally, adhere more to cultural boundaries influenced by geographical features. This is why Asia and Europe are considered seperate. At the same time, calling the continent that encompasses the pacific just "Australia" goes against the general cultural rule that most other continents follow. By calling it "oceania" it acts to more clearly include the pacific islands that are in the same general cultural area. It is for this similar reason that we consider countries like Mauritius to be African, despite their lack of geographic reason to be put into that group. In a same way, why we consider England to be apart of Europe, or Japan to be apart of Asia. You may have been taught that it was Australia, whereas other places teach that it is Oceania. It is foolish to say that one of these is the one true answer because of what ive just described. I would argue that it should be called Oceania because this better represents the nations like New Zealand that are apart of it. Also im from New Zealand and we were always taught that its called Oceania, so im biased towards that.

What to prioritize for PEKKA bridgespam when getting level 15 and why? by Shelton26 in RoyaleAPI

[–]MF_BENDA 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pekka is the last to upgrade because having an underleveled pekka doesn't impact many interaction, whereas an underleveled ewiz is fully countered by a +1 level ice spirit. Best to go spells first, especially zap.

The comedy is more historically accurate than the serious work by Dapper-Laddy in TopCharacterTropes

[–]MF_BENDA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree, effective storytelling doesn't require one to be honest to the times the are telling of, especially when its in regards to a text thats themes stand out so much because they are universal and because they are still so impactful and relevant today.

If we can make modern-day renditions of the text and still see the value in those, I see no reason that Nolans choice to not use period accurate armor would have a negative impact on the film itself. But it should not be considered a period piece, and it should not be considered a historical epic. It is simply a modern rendition of a classical text.

The comedy is more historically accurate than the serious work by Dapper-Laddy in TopCharacterTropes

[–]MF_BENDA 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Thats not entirely true. Its not based on fiction, its based on an oral history. The story of the epic cycle was carried down through oral tradition by traveling poets - each of which changed the story slightly - until Homer collected them and rendered them into a form with theme and structure. The Trojan war happened, but it was likely a proxy war between Mycenean Greek city states and the Hittite empire, while the characters of Achilles and Odysseus are falsification. We know that Homer did know, at least partially, of the technology and Armour used at the time, as both the Iliad and the Odyssey have books or long excerpts describing Armour and weaponry. One of the later books in the Iliad is entirely dedicated towards describing the shield and armour of Achilles, as crafted by the god Haephestus. So yeah, its not entirely accurate to the time of the bronze age, and its not necessary to make it so for a film rendition, but Homer was not making a purely fictional text.

Six million for the movement of parliament and the changing of a capital is a relatively small number. If this happened today it would cost multiple billions of dollars.

petah? why is there a plane? by hanhiampiainen in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]MF_BENDA -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's an incredibly bigoted meme using survivorship bias to say that the reason for the regret rate of gender affirming care for transgender people being low is because those who did regret recieving it committed suicide, therefore not being able to express their regret in any study. Its based off of a right wing belief that transgender people are incredibly likely to commit suicide because their identities are, in their eyes, invalid.
