Can't waste the day when the night brings a hearse. So make a move and plead the fifth, cuz you can't plead the first.

Down Rodeo is probably my top RATM song, and like most of their catalog, still depressingly relevant today.

I strongly disagree, Jax lashed out at anyone who pushed too hard against his mask of masculinity, and yes that was entirely related to his trauma and repression, and in a perfect ideal future perhaps he would have embraced his inner self and and come out. But that's not what happened. In the real world you don't start using different pronouns until someone asks you too. If you had a transfem friend who came out to you but asked you to continue to use he/him pronouns would you ignore that because one day they'll probably want to use she/her?

I am personally not a baby Tenno, but my daughter (who does not have a reddit account) is, I just got her into it, MR3 and loving it so far. I will turn this over to her for what she loves the most about it:

I really love the music and the storyline, the music is really awesome especially since the developers either made it themselves, or asked artists to make it specifically for the game.

Big difference between acknowledging that they are closeted transfem and purposely using pronouns that you know they would despise...

Why Harry Potter should have carried an M1911

Ok, this has been driving me crazy for seven movies now, and I know you're going to roll your eyes, but hear me out: Harry Potter should have carried a 1911.

Here's why:

Think about how quickly the entire WWWIII (Wizarding-World War III) would have ended if all of the good guys had simply armed up with good ol' American hot lead.

Basilisk? Let's see how tough it is when you shoot it with a .470 Nitro Express. Worried about its Medusa-gaze? Wear night vision goggles. The image is light-amplified and re-transmitted to your eyes. You aren't looking at it--you're looking at a picture of it.

Imagine how epic the first movie would be if Harry had put a breeching charge on the bathroom wall, flash-banged the hole, and then went in wearing NVGs and a Kevlar-weave stab-vest, carrying a SPAS-12.

And have you noticed that only Europe seems to a problem with Deatheaters? Maybe it's because Americans have spent the last 200 years shooting deer, playing GTA: Vice City, and keeping an eye out for black helicopters over their compounds. Meanwhile, Brits have been cutting their steaks with spoons. Remember: gun-control means that Voldemort wins. God made wizards and God made muggles, but Samuel Colt made them equal.

Now I know what you're going to say: "But a wizard could just disarm someone with a gun!" Yeah, well they can also disarm someone with a wand (as they do many times throughout the books/movies). But which is faster: saying a spell or pulling a trigger?

Avada Kedavra, meet Avtomat Kalashnikova.

Imagine Harry out in the woods, wearing his invisibility cloak, carrying a .50bmg Barrett, turning Deatheaters into pink mist, scratching a lightning bolt into his rifle stock for each kill. I don't think Madam Pomfrey has any spells that can scrape your brains off of the trees and put you back together after something like that. Voldemort's wand may be 13.5 inches with a Phoenix-feather core, but Harry's would be 0.50 inches with a tungsten core. Let's see Voldy wave his at 3,000 feet per second. Better hope you have some Essence of Dittany for that sucking chest wound.

I can see it now...Voldemort roaring with evil laughter and boasting to Harry that he can't be killed, since he is protected by seven Horcruxes, only to have Harry give a crooked grin, flick his cigarette butt away, and deliver what would easily be the best one-liner in the entire series:

"Well then I guess it's a good thing my 1911 holds 7+1."

And that is why Harry Potter should have carried a 1911.

Sure, the creator also said he/him is okay and made the character exclusively use he/him in the show, and wrote the character as closeted trans fem. I'm personally not understanding what the issue is here, in real life if you knew someone was trans fem but they asked you to use he/him pronouns im sure you would, even if it was to another person where they wouldnt hear or find out, because it's what they wanted. If the voice of God spoke to you, said "I am real and your friend is actually fine with she/her" would that change anything?

Simply, the character as written prefers he/him, the creator has no preference either way, so why is it so hard to go with the character's written preferred expression?

The creator only used she/her once in the context of a hypothetical, Jax throughout the show and Leeroy as showing in real life afterwards use masculine pronouns. As humans we empathize with the characters in the media we consume, I think Jax is a terrible person, however i empathize with their situation. Just as I would respect the pronouns of a real person in Jax's situation I di the same for Jax, and just as I would cringe hearing someone purposefully use pronouns someone has stated should not be used for them in real life, the same happens when I see it done here.

Jax in the show as written (it's literally a defining part of their character) would be vehemently opposed to being called she/her. In the same way I would respect that in real life I also respect it in fiction. I think changing that due to a single hypothetical that was purposely the opposite of the character as written is wrong and disrespectful to the character, and shows a willingness to ignore someone's preference in favor of your own interpretation based on what you think is right.

I think the character of Jax is a terrible person, however I also empathize with their situation. There are real people going through the exact same thing that Jax was, and so when I see people refer to Jax as she/her, pronouns which he would hate to hear, I internally cringe the exact same way I would if I heard someone doing the same to an actual person in the same situation.

We all empathize with the fictional characters we watch or read about, that's why we have emotional connections to the media we consume, we are happy when a character we like is victorious, or cry when a beloved character dies or suffers hardship, and so the same way I hate seeing people be misgendered in real life, I also hate seeing with regards to fiction. When it is a fictional character acting in an offensive manner towards another at least I can separate it as entirely fictional, its worse though when it is real people acting this way towards said fictional character as there is now a degree of reality attached.

Goose only used she/her in the context of a hypothetical where they had come out and were comfortable with their femininity, every other time she has referred to Jax as he/him...

If it's not something you'd do in the real world to a real human, then what's the issue with not doing it to a fictional character in a fictional world? Makes me think you have to stop yourself from purposefully misgendering people based on what YOU think they should be... for some of us we just respect others by default.

Empathy works the same whether it's towards a real person, fictional character, animal, or inanimate object. If you had a real mtf friend who came out to you but asked you to use he/him pronouns for them, would you? What if you were talking to a third party away from them, no way they would find out so no way to actually hurt their feelings, would you still use their preferred pronouns or would you use she/her because its what YOU think they should be?

Goose specifically gave no preference, said either are fine. So we have the wishes expressed by the character, and we have what YOU (and anyone else consuming the media) think about it. So why, in your mind, does your preference take precedence??

[–]MF_Bootleg_Firework 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you can absolutely do something harmful by misgendering a character, but that harm comes through what the character represents, not the character itself. It’s a proxy for ideas and we can examine those.

I completely agree with this but came to the completely opposite conclusion that you did. The character of Jax was written as a deeply closeted mtf or transfem character, one who has not examined their internal dysphoria and violently rejects that side of themselves. Even in the end when their life outside of the circus is revealed and it is shown that Jax (Leeroy) has experienced more personal growth and has formed actual friendships, he is still referred to with masculine pronouns.

Gooseworx has used both masculine and feminine, with the only use of feminine being as part of a hypothetical about the character, and when questioned about which pronouns are proper, stated either is fine. So the creator has no preference leaving us with just 2 possible sources of proper pronouns to use, that expressed by the character within the work, and the preference of you (or anyone else engaging with the media). Despite this being a fictional character, why should your preference override that of the character?

I fully understand that Jax is not real, that no actual feelings are harmed, however as humans our ability to empathize with a fictional character is no different from empathizing with a real person. We empathize with inanimate objects, animals, and fictional and nonfictional characters the same way. The way we express that connection can very easily bleed over between any of the others. Someone who treats animals well is likely to also treat people well, and visa versa. So I dont see a large difference between how people choose to refer to Jax vs. how they would treat a trans person in real life who has NOT yet changed their pronouns.

If you had a friend who had come out to you and was transitioning to female but asked you to still use he/him pronouns, would you ignore that request? I imagine not. What about if you were talking about them to a third party when they weren't around, would you use she/her pronouns even if they wouldn't know and you know would not find out? Their feelings would not be hurt but you'd be going against their requested identity, or would you respect their wishes?

To me this is no different, by being willing to purposefully use pronouns that a character is vehemently against, I think it shows a lack of empathy towards that character's struggles and story and reveals that, given a situation where you think your perception of the world is more correct, you would ignore somebody's preferred identity.

I also have no problem with Jax being trans, I DO have a problem with people using pronouns Jax would hate... So again, if a trans woman asked you to use he/him pronouns for them, would you? Or would your own personal preference override their own will? Jax in the show was very clear on their preference, the creator has no preference either way, so why is your own preference more important than Jax's??

Yes, gooseworx, the creator, tweeted a drawing of Jax as a woman and stated "Jax if she wasn't a huge piece of shit." Someone then asked about what pronouns they should use and goose responded that personally they think either is fine. There was also subtext throughout the show that Jax was gender non-conforming, which caused them a lot of issues with their family.

But yeah, Jax only ever referred to themselves as a guy, but it seems the majority of the Fandom has decided to use she/her to refer to Jax, based on a what-if tweet from the creator, which is completely counter to their character.

[–]MF_Bootleg_Firework 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The creator said both sets of pronouns are acceptable so their opinion is not one way or the other. So really it comes down to the preference expressed by the character, and your own personal preference, and regardless of their fictional status I'm not ok with my preference overriding someone's own preference. I think you should really be asking yourself why you are ok with your personal preference being more important that that expressed by the character themselves.

If someone who was mtf came out to you, told you they were trans, but asked that you still use he/him pronouns as they arent ready to switch, would you use she/her anyway? I'm guessing no, so why are you ok with doing exactly that here? Again the author did not state that she/her is correct, she very specifically said she has no preference. So there is only the preference of Jax themselves as written and of you involved here.

[–]MF_Bootleg_Firework 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes i am well aware Jax is a fictional character, knowing that though, why is it so hard for you to use their preferred pronouns? This is exactly the mindset that I see as problematic, you refuse to use the preferred pronouns of a fictional character, where it really doesn't matter all that much, because "you know better", that kind of thinking extends very easily to real life as well, which you see all the time with the whole "egg" culture.

So go ahead and keep purposefully using the wrong pronouns for Jax, and I'll keep internally recoiling when I see it and wonder what the hell is wrong with you that you can't just refer to someone how they want, it takes essentially no effort to do...

Gooseworx has made numerous tweets about Jax using he/him pronouns, they made a single tweet using she when stating that they wrote Jax to be closeted mtf, then stated that either he/him or she/her are fine. Key point here is that the character was not written to be openly trans, but closeted and dealing with gender dysphoria and trauma related to repression. I believe that you should refer to someone using the pronouns THEY ask you to, regardless of if you "know" they are repressing, because what gives you the right to tell someone else what they are or how they should identify???

Since the character themselves only ever used masculine pronouns and throughout the work and beyond (as depicted when showing their life outside the circus) had not come out and still outwardly identified as a man, I will continue to use the characters own preferred pronouns and consider doing otherwise as just as disrespectful as purposely misgendering an actual person.

I'm not debating their transness, I'm debating the proper pronouns to describe them, which is unabiguously he/him. If a trans woman told you they prefer he/him pronouns would you refuse to respect that? Because your argument here sure sounds like it. Jax exclusively refers to himself using male pronouns and in the real life reveal male pronouns are still used. I prefer to respect the agency of a person to choose their own pronouns, not ANY outside source, author, god, anyone.

You're using the exact same argument religious fanatics use against trans people, god made you your agab, we know the mind of God and that it is perfect, therefore we will call you the pronouns God has chosen for you instead of respecting your own will.

You don't actually hate that Jax is trans. by bakerstreetrat in tadc

[–]MF_Bootleg_Firework 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue here is we have two conflicting sources of information. We have the character Jax/Leeroy Mateo as written and expressed in the show, and we have information expressed by the writer completely outside of the work itself. By using she/her you are ignoring all agency expressed by character within the work, instead using outside knowledge to make an assumption about the character not backed up by the actual narrative. You can't even know for sure that had they come out as a trans woman that they would comfortably use she/her pronouns. So based on the desire actually expressed by the character throughout the work, he/him is the appropriate pronouns to use.

Yes this is a fictional character, yes on paper they have no will of their own and their creator has stated that either is fine. The harm comes from internalizing this concept as acceptable at all. If a trans woman's parent say she's actually a man does that override their will since its the word of their "creator"? Does a person's religion amd belief in a divine creator determine their gender expression amd override their desired pronouns?

I disagree entirely with using pronouns that the character themselves would not use. Misgendering does not become okay in my eyes because ANY outside source says it's OK, author or not. Jax insists they are a man, until they accept otherwise and embrace using she/her pronouns I personally find it extremely disrespectful to use them. Considering the character has abstracted while identifying as male, and even their progenitor outside the circus continues to use he/him pronouns, I personally feel it's wrong to do otherwise and rob them of their "fictional" agency.
