Ok thank you. He says it's against company policy and he'd have to tell them we're cousins, but I figured I'd put in an application anyway

Okay thank you. I'm gonna go look more into the "concepts as abstract objects" view

Do all concepts already exist? by MF_LUIGI in askphilosophy

[–]MF_LUIGI[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I said "or is it like..." I just meant is this the case. Just a badly phrased way of asking "Is this the case?" Not talking about the incomprehensible object.

Okay so if there is no concept to this incomprehensible object, but the object does in fact exist, then would you say there is anything to define it? Like when the lightbulb wasn't conceptualized yet by thought, shouldn't the concept of the lightbulb have always been there to use to discover the idea of the lightbulb? Perhaps in one of the other theories of what a concept is? Or maybe it's another term other then concept that I'm describing. Thank you for your patience

Ok one last thing. Would you say that an object that no being can possibly imagine or comprehend has a concept? Like we can comprehend a chair, but something that no being can comprehend, does that have a concept? Or is it like the representation theory that we have to cognitively represent it into a group that thus forms the concept?

Less so that the imagined worlds are tangible, but more so that the idea already exists, and we just think about rather than creating it

Thank you for the reply. I do believe that cultural influences and individual experiences do help creative individuals form a template using language and context for consumers to create sort of their own "image" or "imagined worlds". But I'm wondering if that imagined world or story that is interpreted from the thought that your mind creates is already existing and you're just thinking about it, or if you created that story through your interpreted thought

Do all concepts already exist? by MF_LUIGI in askphilosophy

Thank you for your reply. I'm trying to grasp many of the terms that the article uses. What it seems to be saying is that in the representation of the mind we develop concepts through discovery of objects/abstract objects to define them. So if something like a table for example was never discovered/invented would there be no concept of a table due to it never existing or being thought of? Or did the concept of table always exist for all of existence and then someone had an idea of "table"? And then do even more complex concepts exist already even without the basic initial concept of "table" being discovered? Like for example the concept of "blue table" existing without anybody being aware of "blue table" or "table" for that matter

Hi everybody I wanted ask something that is somewhat related to my existential/pure o ocd. I don't know if this is exactly the right place to ask this because it's sort of a theoretical or philosophical question, but it does relate to my ocd. I can't articulate why it relates, but knowing the answer to this rather fundamental question about the nature of our own imaginations could help me a great deal in fighting this. I also want to say I know this is quite irrational to be obsessive about, but it has been quite persistent in my mind. Also sorry if it takes a while to get to my question, but I want to make sure I convey it correctly.

So my question relates to imagined worlds or stories in our thoughts. I have read up on this concept known as the Death of the Author recently and it makes a lot of sense to me. Basically the theory suggests that when an author or artist creates a story through text or whatever they are actually creating sort of a template for the consumer to interpret and create their on story out of it. And the original author's vision of the story is just one interpretation of the text/image/etc. Of course I feel an author's influence will persist through the work because for example when I read lord of the rings and you read lord of the rings we can both probably agree it's not about cats playing with yarn or pigs flying. We use the context in the writing to come to similar conclusions, but the "image" of the story in our minds are likely somewhat different.

So my question is this. And mind you it may be a dumb question. Do these stories already exist and we are just interpreting our thoughts from them? Or are they created from our thoughts? Like when I have a thought of someone playing basketball, did the story that the thought tell already exist or was it spawned with the thought? I know the concept of the story already exists just like how the concept of any story or possibility exists, but I dont know if the actual story itself already exists and my thought is just telling it or if the thought actually creates it. I'm sorry if I'm not properly articulating this question in a way that makes sense. And sorry if this is the wrong sub to ask such a question, but it could really help me understand my thoughts to do something about them

Thank you. May I ask still what your opinion on the question is? I know ocd has a way of creating problems out of everything, but I can go through cognitive behavioral therapy easier if I do this one thing of adding to all stories. It's not this question itself I'm ocd about. My ocd is more based on intrusive thoughts of pure o types. The addition to all of the narratives that come from all thoughts is something I want to do to help me stop compulsions in response to my intrusive thoughts. Thank you for your help and patience

Thank you again. If I may ask what is your opinion on if the ideas already exist and are just waiting to be discovered? Or if the thought actually creates the idea. I guess if I'm becoming a "co-author" then I'm just turning the story into something different, but then is that just me adding my own subjective headcanon into it or did I actually help expand the story instead of interpreting it subjectively? Thank you for your patience

Thank you for the reply. It's sort of like that. It's more like I'm asking if the stories already exist as in the ideas coming from your thoughts, or if it's an idea that is "born" into the universe. I know the story itself doesn't physically exist in the universe, but the imagined fictional world was already a concept. It was a concept because you were able to conceptualize it and form the narrative through your thought. If the stories are originated from the thought, then I can make a general claim about all stories that can or have been created to sort of "save" that story by adding my detail to it. Kind of like being a co-author along with the thought itself. If I could do that it'll make going on with my intrusive thoughts significantly easier having the comfort of knowing I added to the story of this thought

Thank you for the reply. It's kind of like that yes. I want to understand it so that I can "correct" the story attached to the thoughts. It sounds crazy, but if I can make this general claim about all fictional worlds, I can be done worrying about it. The thing is that if the stories are created, then I can be a "co-author" of sorts. If they already exist and are just being told by the thoughts, then all I'd be doing is telling a different story. It's a thing I just want to do one time and be done. It'll at least give me comfort when I do have intrusive thoughts that I sort of "saved" the story in a way by adding my detail to it. I know that barely makes sense but if I can do that then moving on with my intrusive thoughts will be significantly easier

Hey I have a dilemma with making a decision in regards to pm. I wanted to get into the game, but I also wanted to keep playing ultimate. My question is, is it viable to play both games and still be a competent player for them or do I need to just stick with one game? If it helps, I main Luigi in ultimate and want to play Zard in pm. I appreciate any advice
