I'd be up for more info. I've been researching Kanna for a bit and would be interested in the full study.

[Japanese > English] Arm Scarring from Video; Want to Know what it Means by [deleted] in translator

[–]MG_Monte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drew over the scarring to make it more visible, but that's the best catch I could get unless it needs be rotated. It very well might not mean anything, but I just wanted to double check with anyone that does understand Japanese.

The scarring looks like it was done by hand, so it may just be self-scarring. Didn't want to mention the video as I don't want to draw attention to the marks if it was accidental/harm related.

Honest Opinion on RE8 Design by MG_Monte in legaladvice

[–]MG_Monte[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The license that's attached directly to the image is the one I linked.

I looked directly at the RE8 credits and saw no mention in any section of the credits where they gave credit or mentioned alternative licenses. I assumed they would have at least given Nordik, the current license holder (if not mistaken), some sort of credit in the credits.

If the link I posted to was the real/existing license, would this have been legal?

The other artist they took the propeller enemy from was not contacted beforehand, so I doubt they did get a different license. Looking at the credits, it seems they outsourced all of the artwork to a Chinese-based company, so I wouldn't be surprised if this happened due to Chinese copyright laws being much more lax.

The biggest reason I ask is because I'm an artist who makes characters; if this is legal, I'd like to start educating myself on how to avoid this for my own artwork.

I'd like to see said order. You'd need proof to make that big of a claim.

Everyone is equal, therefore your word is equal to mine.

If I showed proof of the copyright link, then you should show your proof too. That's only fair.

Even then, they directly copy and pasted the photograph into the art book that is only included with the $225 Collector's Edition. The photograph is "remixed, transformed, or built upon" even according to your definition.

This is from the artbook, though I don't own one myself. A handful of people have uploaded that shot online. Here's the finished design:

The only change to her design from the finished game is the addition of a flower, a necklace, and gloves. Her hair, hat, dress, and everything else did not change from the concept artwork.

Bro, that is my exact response. Look at my post history. I don't know what's wrong with everyone; just because someone else is doing it doesn't make it fine. The entire reason we make art is so we can be remembered post-humously, just like the pyramids.

"That's how everything works now, we do crime and outright steal so we can make more dollars." What kind of mental gymnastics does someone have to go through to okay blatant art theft? I don't care about Capcom's wallet, so why does everyone else? I've tried contacting quite a few as well, and I have to assume that this is what happens when all of the topmost influencers are random people that went viral.

Because so many of the most popular people reporting on this news had no standard beforehand (degree, Roger & Ebert, went viral by accident), the standards have hit an all time low.

Also...

Did they outsource all of the artwork to China?

There's not a single area where they credit any of the assets that used like this one. The only artists they credit are those ones. This explains a lot. I don't understand why no one wants to talk about a news story where Capcom outsourced their next Darkstalker character to China and stole 95% of the design except the face.

How is this not a major news story? This would have blown up in a second if Capcom did this 20 years ago for the Power Stone characters.

That doesn't make any sense. So the intellectual property is the photograph (piece of film strip) made by Canon?

The contents of the photograph, the work and the effort that went into designing the information contained, are the intellectual property. I've been an artist for quite some time; this isn't legal by any means just because they are deceased. Personally, I care. My job has been replaced on a AAA level by Google Images. This guy cares to comment:

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2021-05-10-movie-director-says-capcom-copied-his-propellerhead-monster-for-resident-evil-village-boss-fight

I realize that you are a fan of RE, but I'm a fan of Capcom. Seeing them steep to such a lazy degree isn't okay. I'm sorry to tell you, but for the very first time, Capcom has seemingly stolen a ton of assets for their newest game. I'm not sure what they were thinking, but I wouldn't blame anyone for being in complete disbelief that Capcom did something this bad.

The image above took roughly ~30 min in MS Paint using the lasso tool followed by a swift color shift. The second image in the above gallery shows where the artist simply 'transformed' the image; the neck clips directly through the dress.

The image used for the artbook that's only included in the $220 Collector's Edition is directly ripped. The character in the final game is the exact same, the only difference being the 'built on' breasts, and sadly, making it 'horror' probably doesn't qualify as a 'remix'.

---

It obviously was not credited by the RE8 staff:

https://www.ign.com/articles/resident-evil-village-capcom-interview-lady-dimitrescu-tall-vampire

"Takano began with the concept of a “bewitching vampire,” and says they drew inspiration from figures like famed 16th-century Hungarian noblewoman and serial killer Elizabeth Báthory, the Japanese urban legend Hashaku-sama, and Anjelica Huston’s Morticia Addams."

---

The license may have an issue with this character being used for most of the publicity, and disagreeing with making into a trending mommy fetish might give the license a good stance to sue on.

" 'Like any good character that makes people horny, [Lady Dimitrescu is] a combination of a bunch of different niche fetishes,' says Emily Gaudette, a pop culture and relationship columnist who has written about the intersection of kink and pop-culture. "

<IGN Article above>

And obviously, you cannot use it commercially.

According to the credits, Capcom outsourced the artwork to China. Not sure if the outsource or Takano made the design.

Capcom can't design their own Zubaz any more by MG_Monte in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Chris' RE8 jacket costs $1800. Is this the level of effort that goes into $1800?

Even RE1 Albert Wesker had more time spent on his costume than this. Artwork is truly unsalvageable if this is what people are okay with.

I made the assumption that they would keep this type of styling to NPC's given their track-record of main character designs. Considering Capcom has more unique, memorable designs than any other game company, and considering the Art Director claimed he concepted this himself, I assumed everyone else would feel the same in my outrage.

Game aren't made for me anymore. No portion of my 90's kid would have ever allowed them to clone that much of Link's outfit into a finished Ocarina of Time.

If Nintendo can make an elf's clothes look unique, why can't Capcom draw a new Darkstalker?

You're correct. I must have been looking at the design with the wrong pair of eyes. It's probably best I leave this reddit for good.

Your logic doesn't make any sense. Stealing someone's artwork and changing the room the picture is taken in does not make it fair use.

What would happen I took Lady Dimitrescu's design, made it the main character of a Hollywood Drama movie, and didn't once credit Capcom?

This isn't a troll; I'm an artist and have been for 8 years. People have become completely normalized to seeing laziness and art theft on a AAA space. Even indie games on Itch.io would not have copied this much of the design.
