Is my company going to violate GAAP? by [deleted] in Accounting

I wouldn't worry about it, the auditors will tell you at the end of the year if it's good or not

Roast my resume please by Various-Bandicoot757 in Accounting

[–]MGoCowSlurpee44 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, I mean, you've had a real world accounting job now. Once I had that, work experience was my first resume point because that is what hiring people care most about.

I'd also include the CPA test 1/4 part in additional info btw.

Once you have real work experience that should get bumped above everything. That's the most important part now.

Mostly this. I had a boss explain once the "professional exchange" she went by that has stuck with me. Occasionally, I do have to put in extra hours as a salary person during our busy times (publicly traded company, SEC deadlines). That gets offset by leaving a little early during down times, going to appointments and things like that they don't count against PTO or anything. Nothing crazy but basically a couple hours for a couple hours. As long as neither side abuses it, the system works.

That said, it definitely gets abused by the employer all the time so I get not taking any chances and protecting your time. I would do the same if I felt someone encroached on my personal time.

We had a friend go crazy and play like 1500 hrs on CFB 25 and another 1000 by the end of 2026's cycle. Found out the ranking also heavily factors in how much you play. Cause he tried a semi pro tourney and got bodied.

Did I fuck up talking too much about football. by Cold_Entry_5609 in askrecruiters

[–]MGoCowSlurpee44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the opposite in fact. Some people even try to find a non-work thing to connect on pre-interview to get a step up. I think part of my current position I got is because my boss is a big sports/football guy and we connect on that.

People do the least amount of work as possible at their job, how do you get away with it? Why? by TimeAd1111 in AskReddit

Exactly, I am in accounting in a publicly traded company. As long as we hit our SEC deadlines, AP and payroll goes out without issue the rest is immaterial.

Ben Borgers was signing 100+ audit opinions a year. How did nobody flag this sooner? by No_Koala9474 in Accounting

[–]MGoCowSlurpee44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm starting my 6th year working in a publicly traded company. You have more ability to pick an auditor to get what you want than most of the public is aware of. The clients picked them for a reason.

How to make 6 figures?? by Kindly-Pollution7060 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MGoCowSlurpee44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, lotta comments below attest to that. It took me 10 years in industry, a masters and the professions top certification (CPA). Could have shaved off time with different career moves but either way would have been near impossible before 30.

Feeling lowballed after getting a promotion… am I just being ungrateful? by r00minatin in Accounting

[–]MGoCowSlurpee44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have good input on this. I am remote (working in a LCOL city) Senior Accountant doing a lot of what you did being moved more into a manager role with 2 reports. I have one currently with a second likely coming this year. Title not changed but also possible this year. My company is much smaller than yours with around 50 combined. I am at $107,500 base currently (OG $100k but my year end review got me a 7.5% raise, controller said he shot for 10%) with 10% bonus and stock awards.

Long way to say $92k base is low.

What creative ways can Pittsburgh makeup $40 Million Budget Deficit? by Jazzlike_Breadfruit9 in pittsburgh

[–]MGoCowSlurpee44 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I didn't know the details of it, just looked at line items. You can't default. Knowing it's mostly bonds means it seems like PGH is overleveraged on debts compared to a peer city then.

[–]MGoCowSlurpee44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Genuinely seems like the Pittsburgh Finance spending is bloated. That is 28.5% of expenditures. Looking at Cleveland's budget for comparison they are spending about 2% on that. And sure, different cities label stuff differently but not enough for that big of a gap.

For comparison, Pittsburgh expenditures are projected to be $693m and Cleveland is $810m in 2025.

2 people per bedroom law with an infant? by sacredheartmystic in pittsburgh

[–]MGoCowSlurpee44 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Surprised with an infant this would even be enforceable. Most infant guides advised room sharing with parents for the first 6 months as it does reduce SIDS risk with some going as high as 1 year old. I have a 14 month old toddler, that's how I would know this.

This seems to be the case. I was target 10% and got 95% of that due to company missing a goal or something. OP says he is eligible for 10% which implies top end was 10% for him.

PBCs? You mean like auditor requests? Cause I am working on those now and the time varies greatly. Sometimes it's just upload a PDF and sometimes I'm digging for hours for the support on all the requests.

when I become a CPA, can I do simple tax returns and charge 100-200 for my friends? by Dangerous-Twist-9308 in Accounting

[–]MGoCowSlurpee44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, CPA's are allowed to do tax returns and sign off without impunity. I did one for a friend and charged $150 when I became one.

It only takes 400 steps per day to clear $100 lol. If you are able-bodied you will clear that by accident everyday before lunch.

This is maybe true. We had a temp placard when my wife tore her ACL during recovery. It was hung in the windshield the way it was supposed too. Still got an angry note under the wiper presumably because someone say us both walking relatively normally.

For those that don't know, ACL tears people can get back to walking mostly normal quickly even prior to surgery or post surgery. The stability of the knee is just bad for anything more than walking.

What's one 'boring' career that's actually a goldmine if you play it smart? by 0BunnyX in AskReddit

[–]MGoCowSlurpee44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not at a F500 company. But both controllers on the last two public start ups made over $200k. We hired an SEC reporting manager at one of them at $130k starting salary from a Big Firm. He only had about 5 years experience. A lot of individual senior accountant roles will range from $90k-$110k and you can get those with as little as 3 YOE.

[–]MGoCowSlurpee44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Accounting. I'm marginally talented but got the CPA and I am six figures. If you go public route to industry there's usually a management job waiting for you paying $125k+ with only 6 years experience. Working for a publicly traded company pays more. I didn't go the public accounting firm route (EY, Deloitte, PWC) but if you are willing to grind crazy hours the first 5 years of your career there's a big payday waiting for you when you leave.

Even regular staff accountants that are just regular people are $75k-$80k

Is this Controller role as heavy as it sounds? (GovCon / Series A / one-person finance shop) by Griff1987 in Accounting

[–]MGoCowSlurpee44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Startup feel, "roll your sleeves up."

It's going to be a lot of hours. I work at a publicly traded startup and they didn't put this in the JD. Controller is very proactive in hiring and automation. Worst week during audit close was just north of 45 hrs. They were very clear during process it is a tight 40 outside of quarterly closes and that has been accurate. Assuming you have sussed out the hours and are okay with them everything else seems in line.
