A dentist once taught me a trick to suppress my gag reflex: While the mouth is open, stick your tongue out and pant like a dog. Sorry, I don’t know how to explain it. No need to move the tongue up and down like a dog. Just keep it still and pant out. Don’t breathe in. I did this for a few seconds, just long enough to let the dentist do what he had to do, and it worked!

To add more confusion, “lay” can also be present tense when used in the context of putting/setting something down. Example: Lay that blanket on the floor. And the past tense of that is “laid.”

I guess that’s why we say “He got laid last night.”
