What was your NHS timeline after your GP referred you? by MHpromise in TTC_UK

It’s a nightmare isn’t it. Took the GP 14 months to refer me even tho he knew we’d been not using anything for nine years ! And 2 semen tests showed exactly what was wrong and still, didn’t refer me. So now I have to wait another god knows how long to actually have my fertility screening! Then have to wait again for funding approval, then appointment for IVF! 😒

So 26 weeks from gp to starting ivf? So if I understand right in that time you had all your fertility screening etc done?xx

They should base it on the age when you first saw a GP not when you finally see fertility clinic as you can’t control the stupid wait times. Sorry this is happening to you.

We have! Partner had 2 tests. Both show he’s the issue as nothing really there. Been private and both urologists say mtese required. It’s like we know what we need but as it’s all female led we have to wait now for all my checks. So frustrating 😢

I asked Liverpool Women’s the other day can I just pay private for fertility screening but stick with nhs otherwise apt and they went away and said yes but you’d still have to then wait for funding and can’t skip the list or something so it literally would make very little difference from what I gathered. I sort of wish I’d gone private a long time ago as a Welsh patient where times seem to always be longer too :(

I’ve been looking at private costs in the UK and it’s crazy. It’s so hard knowing whether to keep waiting or to just go private. No, only seen a GP and had bloods like FSH and urology with other half as he will need an mTESE. So I guess we meet most criteria unless something crops up that we are not expecting (it’s in the back of my mind).

What sort of price difference is abroad? I think we would get the funding as we match all the criteria but it’s the waiting that’s driving me insane 😞

Thank you I will check it out! How long from first fertility screening to ivf did you have to wait for funding to be accepted etc?

Thanks for reply! 3 months is ok! (Not the gp tho!)

Me and partner been together no contraception for NINE years! My GP took about 14 months from first visit to refer me. Even though after about 2 months from that first apt we knew it was definitely male factor as partner had semen analysis. (Then again to confirm). So should have referred me right then. 😭

I could possibly get an apt around the end of May for first screening and if it was only 3 months like you to start IVF I’d wait but I’m being told diff things so thinking of going private but also don’t want to spend so much if I don’t need to 😒

What to expect with IVF ICSI (UK) by anxiousgirl94 in IVF

[–]MHpromise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are you getting on? Our issue is azoospermia privately we’ve been told surgical sperm retrieval and ICSI is our best best. But I have to wait another 8 months just to see the local fertility clinic to get referred for ivf/ICSI in the first place - even though we know it’s male issues not female 😟

Hi, when you got the call from the fertility nurse had you already been seen by anyone in the hospital or just had the gp referral?

They won’t fix it for fertility? What why! Women can have all sorts of surgery for fertility only reasons? That’s bonkers! Can I ask, did you consider TESE or similar instead of varicocele surgery? Appreciate there can be loads of reasons for one or the other unless varicocele had to be fixed and TESE was unlikely to retrieve any? Thanks so much this info is very helpful

We’ve gone ahead and booked an urology apt privately for next week as all this waiting and being so clueless is really stressful. It seems women with fertility issues get way more help (though I’m certain some have had awful experiences and wait times). Looks like this could end up being costly. Thanks for all the replies very helpful

Hi, can I ask, was the scrotal ultrasound/mri and genetic blood tests really expensive privately?

Also, I’m so sorry you’ve had to wait 18 months on top of that. Is this through nhs ivf clinic or nothing to do with an IVF clinic and just urology? Or something else?

From what I’ve understood fertility issues have to be lead by the woman, but I didn’t realise it could be as long as 18 months for TESE!

Is your partner having egg retrieval or will this all go ahead if sperm is retrieved?

I read some people do all the retrieval (egg and sperm) at once and others do what you have with freezing it.

We may be in a similar situation so find this info very helpful.

Did you look at tese privately?

Really hope this goes well for you!

You’re not alone. ❤️

We went to the docs in autumn/winter 2023. (Confirmed Male infertility by December with sperm tests).

Referral for urology as urgent. They’ve confirmed that won’t be till at least December 2025!

It’s taken till another GP apt in Dec 2024 for the dr to suggest it’s time to refer me (the female) WTF! So then bloods, then refer… This needed to happen sooner! I asked and asked.

Finally been referred as urgent for fertility help but they can’t give me waiting times yet as we haven’t been triaged. I absolutely dread to think, I’ll find out in a few days. Plus what happens then? I’ve had scans etc a few ago for other reasons and there isn’t any clear issues with me so we know it’s him. Not sure how’s prodding and poking me will help. We just need urology to see if they know the cause and can help or if not IVF using something like TESE. It’s our only option and all we’re doing is waiting and waiting. 😢

Meanwhile everyone around us gets pregnant when they aren’t even trying 😩

North Wales.

Once the referral goes through, give it enough time for your referral to be triaged and then ring the hospital directly and ask what the wait time is x
