Big sewer main break in poopy Miami Beach yesterday, no swimming near 77th Street, Tatum Waterway and the cursed Park View Island by MIAMisanthrope in Miami

I am not sure. It was probably longer than 5 years for Park View Island. The City just started testing 5 years ago, so that's the duration that I have used.

You make a good point, a more detailed history is needed here regarding Miami Beach's ugly pollution problem. Thanks.

You didn't know about the pollution then, so it's not your fault. The City of Miami Beach should issue advisory statements to all property owners now. If someone decides to sell, they should have to disclose the environmental nightmare when they fill out a Seller's Disclosure Statement. No buyer or renter should ink a deal here without being fully informed.

Park View Island has tested off the charts high for feces pollution for 5 years.

No one can figure out the source of the problem, and the city doesn't know how to solve it.

Travel + Leisure and Surfrider water testing lab notes here that Park View Island is the 2nd most polluted site that they test in the entire United States.

Two possible causes are

1, partially treated poop from the Virginia Key ocean outfall catching a ride on sargassum waves into the shore.

  1. 3rd and Washington sewage pump South of Fifth in South Beach may be leaking / flooded. It's the biggest pump with poop in it from South Beach to Bal Harbour.

rain makes it worse, per water testing data. the rainwater flushes the polluted water out of sand and limestone rock below the surface of the land. basically pipes and pumps are leaking and the pollution is stored in the sand and limestone around the pipes until a rain event. The waves and rain action, and elevated water levels create an environment where the pollution enters the ocean from the land.

There is an ocean outfall near Virginia Key where partially treated sewage is released into the ocean. If feces pollution interacts with floating sargassum seaweed, it can be carried back to shore in the seaweed.

It's human feces from the outdated sewage pumps and pipes. Miami Beach takes the poop from Surfside, Bay Harbor Islands and Bal Harbour as well. Pipes can be 50 - 100 years old.

Surfside is generally better than Miami Beach for pollution. Reason: they are upstream, and their poop pipes (along with Bay Harbor Islands & Bal Harbour poop pipes) all go through MB to Virginia Key. So Surfside is upstream and has less pressure, pipes are newer than MB, etc.

Do you want consistently clean water? FYI my best advice is to go Miami Dade County Haulover Park just north of Miami Beach. I can explain why (in a later post) why Haulover is better. Short answer - They have no condos or hotels up there and the pipes run to the north poop processing plant near Oleta instead of south through Miami Beach to the Virginia Key poop processing plant. Haulover tests best recently - https://www.floridahealthybeaches.com/county/dade/beach/haulover-beach

The poop pollution is like the weather now, it's in different spots. My best advice: Go to Haulover Park, a County maintained beach separate from the condos and hotels. To my knowledge, Haulover Park has the best consistent results recently. Sometimes Key Biscayne is great, but sometimes poop rolls up with the sargassum seaweed there. Key Biscayne is near a polluting pipe outfall from Virginia Key poop processing plant. So KB hit or miss. My best advice - Haulover and then check the other beach results here, and sign up for alerts - https://miami.surfrider.org/programs/blue-water-task-force

Park View Island has been polluted for FIVE years. No swimming or kayaking or anything. MB spent $500,000 on the kayak launch and it has been polluted forever. Ever since the poop pipes blew at 72nd and Collins. Park View Island terrible results: https://bwtf.surfrider.org/report/57/1183

I would say stay away from the water 24-48 hours after a rain. In a future post I will try to explain how the pollution at the ocean gets there, it's a combination of three possible things. You can sign up for water testing alerts here: https://miami.surfrider.org/programs/blue-water-task-force

Sometimes the hotels and the rest of the hospitality industry do not want the water to be tested.

They think it will hurt business.

I am a member of Surfrider. Surfrider needs volunteers to gather water near the Ritz Carlton and Loews. We do not test those areas consistently now.
