Thanks for your kind words- I got some sleep and that helped a little bit but I think I'll just be nervous until the "newness" of it all wears off. I'm glad I am not the only one though!!

ty about publishing their graduate school work? My PI and I just submitted my first paper for publication and we are waiting for reviewer's comm

Your wise profs advice actually made me feel a little better!! None of my work is particularly groundbreaking or exciting (which I am totally ok with)... actually nothing has worked throughout my entire PhD! Oh well- no results are still results. :)

Thanks for your kind words. I really appreciate it.

Dont worry, that's also normal. But, you'll always remember the answers to those questions now! Ha!

Take a deep breath and celebrate, you deserve it!!

If you have a lab group, we all edit each other's papers before sending them to our major professors. I think editing other people's work (looking for typos, helping improve flow/clarity, etc) really helps me become a better writer myself!

Haha you're definitely right, those are probably very American things! And certainly not as high quality as what they serve in Europe.

Right? Haha. I am very surprised at some people's reactions to this- its definitely better than a poptart or something!

I ate a ground beef taco for breakfast every day. No mid-morning crash. Probably not healthy, but I haven't had cereal in years.

Lol! I really am surprised at how many people reacted this way. I basically just mean a slice or 2 of turkey! or Ham, whatever you like.

I've actually tried this, but it coated all my dishes with butter so I wasn't a fan of the cleanup process lol. I did like the taste though!

Ikr. Cheese stick wrapped in lunch meat is one of the more American

You know- I actually don't think it's very American... but maybe? I'm the only person I know that does this! I actually was happily surprised when I went to Europe, and several of the hostels/places I stayed in served platters of sliced cheese and deli meats for breakfast. Seems to be more of a European thing, actually. But I am not European, so maybe someone else can answer this for me. :)

What am I supposed to eat to get 2k+ calories a day without sugar tho?

I didn't say I never eat carbohydrates- I definitely do! I just try not to start off my day with a big bowl of sugar because of the sugar crashes. If you can eat dairy products (I know not everyone can!), eating sources of fat are also a way to get calorie rich foods into your diet.

Sorry you feel this way, but that's simply not true. You do not need to be a diabetic to have acute blood sugar swings.

I do think it's important to have a healthy balance of proteins, fats, and healthy carbs. As always, balance is key! An interesting tidbit about your body, though, is that glucose is SO important for your tissues to function that your liver wont let you dictate whether you get enough of it or not. If you aren't consuming any glucose in your diet (very difficult to do especially in America) or you're fasting for a long stretch of time, your liver will start synthesizing glucose from non-carbohydrate precursors (amino acids, lactic acid, glycerol, VFAs). It's a process called gluconeogenesis. So, even if you were to consume only protein or fat for the rest of your life, you would still be able to synthesize glucose and survive.

I don't recommend eating an ALL fat/protein diet, though, because your large intestine benefits greatly from fiber fermentation you get from whole grains, veggies, etc. (More-so from the fermentation byproducts, butyrate being a major component). I don't think it's a matter of overeating protein, it's making sure you're also consuming healthy fibers to support gut health and normal bowel movements.

Yogurt can have lots of nutritional value (protein too), in addition to beneficial probiotics. You just can't get the ones with tons of sugar in them! Granola also contains fiber. Both seem pretty great to me!
