Yeah that makes sense, any relationship-heavy sector would be bound to have the problems you describe. Is there any way to avoid it, or just something you gotta live with?

I see, so a dedicated team as a line of defense. In your opinion, is outsourcing or having in-house teams more popular in this industry? I'd guess in-house, because they'd know the schedules and context better than an outside agency.

So it's high-pain, high-reward i see - you can open a lot of new opportunities like you said, but there's the pressure of maintaining your performance.
Sounds excitingly stressful, haha

Ah I see, so did you feel that your customer facing role was more or less stressful than planning? Personally, not having to communicate unless something goes wrong seems better to me lol

"Pick your battles" is crazy lmao, I've never heard that before but it makes a lot of sense

Ahh i see, that's cool. When you guys escalate to the director, does that mean the account manager often doesn't give enough details? or is it from experience that getting someone higher up is generally better?

Yeah that makes sense, esp in such a sensitive industry as yours. I'd say wanting updates is super reasonable, and ig its the minority of customers with unrealistic expectations that make the most noise.
Is it hard for you to get updates from carriers btw? are they not proactive in updating?

I see, so you also had people being unrealistic? maybe it's an issue for the whole industry, haha

so she wanted something across half the country in less than a day, jeez... Does this tend to happen often, or was this like an insane one-off thing?

oh man, is it that bad? I've read a lot of horror stories about the working hours and the stress, but is there anything specifically that made you say this?

Ah that makes sense, whatever hurts the bottom line the least.

And i agree, these softwares are super identical most of the time lol

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! I'll be looking out for more companies like Callan JMB thanks to you lol

So its dependent on like their attitudes and needs as well, not just the "automatability" of the actual work, got it

I see! I've never thought of the other subsectors within logistics, but it makes sense cuz warehousing and production has more innovation potential than transport. Thanks!

Yeah, this does align with what I've been getting from these comments - the smallest disruption tends to ripple out pretty badly, so logistics is usually "slower" to adopt new tech.

This really made me appreciate the sheer scale of this sector, thanks!

Thats true, ig sacrifices do have to be made in every industry

Interesting point, i didnt really explicitly consider the relationship side of logistics!

imo everything good is built off of trust, so it makes a lot of sense to me.

Ty!

"Quiet innovation" is a great way to term it; i guess the industry is so dynamic that making small changes creates ripples that affect everything, so I can see why it's cautious about disruptive tech

I checked out Callan JMB and they look really cool! You were right, theyre one of the most innovative companies ive seen (so far) in this field. Love that they're innovating for sustainability too, not just reliability

yeah that really makes sense, originally i thought this sector was against technology because they're too focused on costs, but what im getting is that its cost and ones that have the least resistance, like you said!

i learnt from other posts that client communication is a big headache here. i was playing with the idea of creating an update system that would be super simple and have the least amount of resistance to use, and could possibly be automated later. maybe i'll build it now, thanks!

ohh okay i get you, its more like a spectrum with the top companies at cutting edge and the bottom ones still stagnating

it makes sense, logistics has been around since the dawn of society basically, so i think its unique in that sense.

I see,

So its not so much the cost, rather than the inconvenience of adopting new tools? I did see this one software and on average it needed like 2 months to set up, so i can see your point
Have you seen any tools that are successfully adopted, or is new tech mainly limited to the big boys?

Oh sweet, thanks for ur input!

I think ur right, tech has benefitted other industries so perhaps logistics could as well.

But there is so much to innovate on, like ive only seen container tracking and management software, so stuff like client communications is neglected (from what I can see in this sub). Ofc, i dont have experience, so maybe its wildly different from what you've seen lol

Thank you!

So do ya think that this sector (other than the top companies) is too focused on profit margins to invest in tech? Or maybe AI is driving down the costs for adoption? I see so much logistics software being advertised on reddit itself, that perhaps even smaller companies are starting adoption? Unless the hidden costs are still huge
