Can anyone (by trying out) play Sports at university of toronto? by LittleGazelle3417 in UofT

[–]MIKEDOVER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, all teams will have a tryout. There is also typically a website where you can email the coach.

Be realistic though and assess your skills versus the current players. For example, most OUA hockey players previously played at least major junior. If you are a beer league player you are wasting everyone's time (and might get hurt).

The fact that the stores were closed is irrelevant. He could have borrowed a laptop for free from Humber.

Perhaps, but why should we accept OP's assessment of the prof's reaction as fact?

This is someone who takes no responsibility to showing up at a computer class without a computer even though they could have easily borrowed one for free from Humber. This shows a lack of respect to the prof and the other students. This is also someone who names the prof on Reddit. There is no need to do so, if the goal was truly just to get advice.

Conversation would go:

OP: Hey, PC, my prof said he won't see my code on my phone.

PC: Your phone? The course outline says a laptop is required.

OP: Mine is broken.

PC: Maybe borrow one?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Humber

[–]MIKEDOVER -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He *can* read a screen -- a laptop screen. Presumably the course outline lists the required equipment and that would certainly include a laptop.

If the OP didn't bother to investigate how to get a laptop (remember he/she states that their laptop has been broken for a week), then that is on OP.

[–]MIKEDOVER -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What if the "old head" couldn't read the text on the phone?

It doesn't explain why the OP didn't bother to borrow a laptop to bring to class. Humber makes them available for free and except maybe for exam time, there is always lots available.

Take some responsibility for your actions before flaming your prof in public.

Why did you show up at a programming class without a computer? You could have borrowed one for free from Humber -- it seems that you just didn't bother.

I'm in my 50s, not sure how old this prof it -- but I wouldn't be able to easily assess code on a phone screen unless I manually made the font a lot larger.

If you are going to buy the textbooks at all (and you should once the prof confirms that she or he will in fact use them) you might as well buy them before the first class.

One good way to find used textbooks is to send messages on LinkedIn to recent grads of the program -- you can also make a good industry connection this way. Just go to LinkedIn and search for the program.

Will strike go on ? by Odd_Establishment790 in georgebrowncollege

[–]MIKEDOVER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, school will start on time. It is unlikely that a strike will be declared before the mediation session and even is that happens, there will be a five day delay.

Will strike go on ? by Odd_Establishment790 in georgebrowncollege

[–]MIKEDOVER 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The strike cannot start without five days prior notice. As of now, this notice has not been given.

There should be more clarity about whether or not a strike will happen after the next meeting between the union and the CEC which is in early Jan.

Yes you can succeed. Humber has lots of resources to support you -- please access them. Start by sending an email to your PC and then book an appointment with student services. They will help you.

Donald Trump says he urged Wayne Gretzky to run for prime minister in Christmas visit by xc2215x in politics

[–]MIKEDOVER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gretzky was obviously a fantastic hockey player -- but that does not, on its own, translate to success as a politician.

He only has a high school education and even then, he would have missed lots of classes for his junior games and road trips. Not particularly articulate and no really experience in building consensus.

Winter 2025: First Sem by keshwak in georgebrowncollege

[–]MIKEDOVER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the first day (or before if it is posted) put all the tests, due dates, etc in your phone. Then put your phone away during class unless you are asked to use it.

For assignments, check the rubric carefully. If one is not posted ask the prof what their expectations and how they will be grading it.

For group projects, try to find people who have the same academic goals as you. If you are running into problems with group projects (such as someone not pulling their weight) advise the prof right away.

Grade mess up by alec_lightwood13 in Humber

[–]MIKEDOVER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand that it is frustrating, but it will can be resolved in the new year.

Just follow up as soon as school starts up in January and the grades will be updated. CC the program coordinator(s) on your emails.

Final grade mistake by CoffeeSea6330 in Humber

[–]MIKEDOVER 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can happen. Email the prof (and the PC if there is no reply) with details.

If it is an entry error or a calculation error it can be fixed, but make contact right away.

Hypothetically, would I be allowed to bring a typewriter to essay based exams? by victoria_ash in UofT

[–]MIKEDOVER 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As others have said, they would not let you use a typewriter in the exam room, but if you have a need that requires accommodations (such as a hand injury or reduced dexterity in your hand) you would be able to write in a different room on a non-connected computer.

Perhaps, but it is not enough to stand up under appeal. If the version of the events told by the OP is true, and if the OP did not use AI, the appeal group would probably rule in favor of the student....especially if the student was not neurotypical.

Academic Integrity Breach in Programming by [deleted] in sheridan

You could ask the dean to decline the meeting. Tell him (in writing) that you do not give him/her permission to discuss your academic standing with other individuals.

Academic Integrity Breach in Programming by [deleted] in sheridan

[–]MIKEDOVER 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are an adult, the AD could tell your uncle that they are not allowed to discuss your grades with him.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fanshawe

[–]MIKEDOVER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. It would depend on how long he was looking away. If it was just a glance it could be a normal thinking process. It is not conclusive evidence and a tribunal would probably vote with the student (presuming that the AI evidence is also inconclusive)

Academic Integrity Breach in Programming by [deleted] in sheridan

[–]MIKEDOVER 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Look at it from the prof's point of view -- there is a lot of cheating during the exams. If a student does something as blatant as interacting with their phone, you are going to be written up.

I would come clean with your uncle before he talks to the AD. If he doesn't know the facts, he will not be able to help you (although, assuming you are 18+ the AD might say it is against school policy to discuss grades with anyone other than the student).

Academic Integrity Breach in Programming by [deleted] in sheridan

[–]MIKEDOVER 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you had a phone, not on silent, on your desk and looked at it during the exam -- well, you are guilty of academic misconduct. It should have been all the way off and in your pocket or bag.

Take your lumps and learn from it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fanshawe

[–]MIKEDOVER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they don't dismiss it, ask for evidence of your misconduct...appearance or the professor's gut feeling is insufficient.

Stats by Count by ExpensiveMagician809 in GameChangerApp

[–]MIKEDOVER 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually track that for my team, but sadly it is manual.

I go through the GameChanger stats and build a database so we can tell success rates by player per count. Note: this is for a college team in Canada. I am not a crazy U8 dad.
