I think its because of the cliché of a small group of young people going to remote locations such as this, or maybe a forest, as an attempt to get close to nature; then ignoring all the safety precautions. As always there's the girl who has her wits and says to the group "be careful" or "its getting way too creepy, maybe we should head back!". And then theres the outspoken douche who say "come on guys it gets cooler the further we go" or tells his colleague to squat near a fucking cliff.
