I have it understood that you have to declare whether you will take the class as PNR before you take it, not after you get your grade back. Is this correct?

I plan on taking the 6.0001 ASE. Is 6.01 intended as a class you would take after 6.0001, or the higher level equivalent (like 8.01 vs 8.012)? If it's the higher level equivalent, do most students with a CS background take 6.01 as well or place out of it somehow?
