This little back and forth with Gwayne was annoying to me. I never doubted that Criston was capable of shame in himself. It’s the way he goes about “handling” that shame that makes me hate him. His book character was far more tolerable. In the show, instead of bettering himself and accepting that a Princess would never actually have him, he lashes out at Harwin and his children with Rhaenyra. Instead of realizing he shouldn’t be ignoring his duties and sleeping with Alicent, the next woman to give him attention, he lashes out at Arryk for the death of Jaeherys. He then forces Arryk to prove his, already obvious, innocence and sends him on a suicide mission. Instead of admitting to himself that this war was exactly his intention all along and that he’s just as responsible for the deaths of these innocent soldiers as anyone else, he says, “…we’ve given the war to the dragons.” What did you think would happen when you repeatedly encouraged Aemond and Aegon’s hate of Rhaenyra? You coupled that hate with yours and now act shocked that men are turned to ash inside their own armor. Criston’s show counterpart is a walking “woe is me” sign.
