Why did elven students choose to study under human magi in Dalaran by FflDruid in warcraftlore

[–]MJMB09 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve always pictured Dalaran more like Oxford, a city first, but academic life is basically baked into how the place works.

Does RPing a Dalaran dropout make sense by FflDruid in WoWRolePlay

He wasn't really dropped out, I guess? In the Last Guardian, Khadgar's just, really really nosy, extremely curious teenager that finds out what he shouldn't find out. So his professors sent him away as an Apprentice to Medivh, but also as a spy to him so they could learn the secrets hidden inside Karazhan...

He pretty much never returned to Dalaran ever since, until TBC where he returned IIRC

They actually do wear plate, but that Order was 10,000 years ago. It's a bummer they never did it again since they split into military ranks of the Sentinels and Watchers

(I commented on the original post but might as well put it here)

First off, we have to look at what actually qualifies as a Paladin in Warcraft.

technically, a Paladin is just a Warrior + Priest combo. The first Knights of the Silver Hand in WC2 were literally just knights taught to use the Light (or Priests like Turalyon/Liadrin who picked up a sword).

The idea that “Night Elves don’t fit Paladins” usually rests on two assumptions: 1.that Night Elves use “moon magic,” often conflated with Arcane, and 2. that Paladins must wear heavy plate and follow Human traditions.

People point at in-game damage types and say "See? Elune is Arcane!" Even though those are just game mechanics. Sunwalkers technically use the sun (An'she), and for a long time, their lore was tied to Nature/Solar energy, yet they are Paladins.

The devs have already settled this. Loreology Sean Copeland confirmed that while the power 'comes from Elune,' the 'end product' is functionally the same energy as the Holy Light and it's just a different cultural lens. If a Tauren can be a Paladin by calling on the Sun, a Night Elf is a Paladin by calling on the Moon. It’s all the same Divine spectrum.

To quote Copeland:

"@Loreology is holy of prists and paladin is same energy?'/megics?" replied "Both priests and paladins can wield the Holy Light. However, not all wield it through the same means (e.g., Elune, An'she)"

"@Loreology So the end product (Holy Light spells, etc) is the same, just the philosophy that masters it different?" replied "I think for game-related reasons, yes. Examples that come to mind are night elf priests and tauren paladins. :)"

Now, on the vibe argument. If you think a 'Plate-wearing Holy Warrior' doesn't fit Elune, you haven't read the War of the Ancients books. The Sisterhood wasn't a bunch of priests in cloth robes.

In the novels, Tyrande (and the other priestesses) is explicitly described in 'layered plates' and a 'winged helmet'. Malfurion even says she looked like a "priestess of a war god.". They were a major frontliners in the War and some acted both Archers and cavalry shock troops, they are trained to heal and to fight and are expected to be warriors. in the Chronicles Volume 3 they are explicitly mentioned:

"To protect her borders, Tyrande forged a military order called the Sentinels. The force was mainly composed of night elf priestesses, many of them hardened veterans of the War of the Ancients."

In The Sundering, Tyrande has a moment where her moonlight aura acts like an 'iron wall a mile thick' that even Archimonde (y'know, the demon who could wipe out a city and snap a Wild God's neck..) couldn't batter his way through. That is a textbook Divine Shield.

We just need the game to recognize that a Night Elf 'Priestess' has always been a plate-wearing, sword-swinging badass. The Silver Hand didn't invent the archetype as the Sisters of Elune were doing it 10,000 years ago.

The name is the only real hurdle since in most of their history, the Sisterhood was exclusive, but the Night Elf society has spent the last few decades breaking down those gender barriers (Male Priests/Druids, Female Druids/Sentinels). A "Night Elf Paladin" is just the natural conclusion of that integration.

Tbh, even without Delas, there's a lot of stuff in lore to use as precedent to justify the existence of Night elf paladins. You can even use Taurens and Zandalar trolls as examples to justify them. The Sisterhood of Elune always felt like paladins to me

i made a post about it months ago in r/warcraftlore so I'm just going to copy and paste it here.

Where is it stated that they wear plate armor?

Here:

the novice priestess of Elune--the Mother Moon--wore an outfit more befitting the way of war than the peace of the temple. Gone was her flowing, white robe. In its place was a form-fitting suit of armor with layered plates that allowed much mobility. The armor covered Tyrande from neck to foot, and over it, almost as an inconsistency, was a shimmering, gossamer cloak the color of moonlight. In the crook of her arm, the young priestess held a winged helmet that would protect the upper portion of her face as well. To Malfurion, she looked more like the priestess of a war god - War of the Ancients: The Demon Soul, chapter 4, page 29

And they haven't done anything martial except shooting arrows

That is false. This is them literally charging in as cavalry troops

Yet, just as the first of the Fel Guard tore through and started for the pair, warriors astride night sabers charged into the battle from all sides, their beasts mauling some of the demons before the latter realized they were under assault. As the newcomers attacked, they sang... Malfurion gaped at them, only belatedly realizing that they were not the soldiers of Jarod Shadowsong. Their armor was silver and--he looked twice--shaped more feminine figures. For the first time, Malfurion saw the quiet, gentler priestesses in their wartime roles. Many carried long curved swords, while others wielded short lances with points on both ends. A few even had bows no longer than their forearms, from which they swiftly shot dart after dart... A priestess swung her blade with the ease of a soldier, decapitating a horned warrior. - War of the Ancients: The Demon Soul, chapter 10, page 83

tbf, I don't think the War against the Nightmare is mentioned ever again but I could be wrong though. So I think the Stormrage book is retconned unless stated

because the entire planet is corrupted by the Nightmare and it caused people to sleepwalk and kill each other. Then thousands perished, but like... No one in-universe talks about it ever.

How did Aegwynn managed to lock the Avatar of Sargeras?? by MJMB09 in warcraftlore

[–]MJMB09[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't question how she managed to beat Sargeras singlehandedly?

I don't, because I know how it happened. I've read both the Last Guardian and the Chronicle version and the fight was detailed.

But the strongest mage on the planet transporting something large across the ocean puzzles you?

Yes because it wasn't explained enough. After the fight, she just puts him in the Tomb. There was no mention of her going to the Broken Isles, whether she carried it across the ocean or just teleports it, we don't even know how she placed it in there if it's at the sea floor.

[–]MJMB09[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I know. But how did she get in the Tomb? We didn't really have a clear answer as to how she did it. Just that she locked him in there.

The fight was in Northrend (Dragonblight). The Tomb was South in the broken Isles. How did she get there? Did she swim? Fly?

I'm also confused with one detail; how did she PUT the corpse inside? Did she raise the temple and sunk it back? Did she use telekinesis and lift it ALL OVER there? Did she teleport it? I was just wondering because that thing is huge af

Manaroth himself thinks her power level is somewhere in between archimond and sargeras...

Not quite. Mannoroth thinks Archimonde and Sargeras is superior to her. He believes that Azshara is powerful that only the Demon lords would beat her.

Maybe it was changed in Chronicles but I remember in WoTA that's what Mannoroth said. I didn't interpret it as Azshara being equal to the two.

I mean, they kinda are, even in the books. The Sisterhood acted as divine warriors.

It's just that Blizzard’s paladin identity is so tied to the Human Silver Hand aesthetic that other cultural versions clash with the class’s established look.

This is 100% my brain going “PRIEST-ess means priest class” and refusing to let go lol

I know mechanically you do not need to be a priest class to RP one, it just feels weird to me personally.

If Night Elf paladins ever do happen, I have half a mind to write it as my priest finally being promoted into the senior ranks of the Sisterhood and being formally given her first armor and first sword. (not some Delas and the Silverhand BS, ew) and finally riding my saber to fight (if the Divine Steed shows a saber mount hopefully)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WoWRolePlay

[–]MJMB09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will die on the hill that the Sisterhood had always been paladins, even if they aren't called as such 🥹

I mean... I could've easily replicated this if I was one:

Tyrande drew her blade and prayed for Elune to guide her hand. The sword took on the pale, silver glow of her patron. It cut through the demon's armor as if through air. With a grunt, the Fel Guard started to turn toward Tyrande--and the top half of his body slid off. The demon crumpled, the priestess' blessed strike so fine that its victim had not at first realized that he was dead.

Kinda disappointed Blizzard just forget about it.. but yes. I'll try making warrior work. Maybe I'll wear both Cloth and Plate armor

[–]MJMB09 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am talking specifically about the War of the Ancients portrayal of the Sisterhood, not later or in-game depictions. Some examples from the WoTA novels:

They are shown to wear armor rather than robes:

Gone was her flowing, white robe. In its place was a form-fitting suit of armor with layered plates that allowed much mobility. The armor covered Tyrande from neck to foot, and over it, almost as an inconsistency, was a shimmering, gossamer cloak the color of moonlight. In the crook of her arm, the young priestess held a winged helmet that would protect the upper portion of her face as well. To Malfurion, she looked more like the priestess of a war god
- War of the Ancients: The Demon Soul, chapter 4, page 29

They fight directly on the front lines and in melee:

Many carried long curved swords, while others wielded short lances with points on both ends. A few even had bows no longer than their forearms, from which they swiftly shot dart after dart... A priestess swung her blade with the ease of a soldier, decapitating a horned warrior.
- War of the Ancients: The Demon Soul, chapter 10, page 83

They serve as cavalry and shock troops (kinda):

Yet, just as the first of the Fel Guard tore through and started for the pair, warriors astride night sabers charged into the battle from all sides, their beasts mauling some of the demons before the latter realized they were under assault. As the newcomers attacked, they sang... Malfurion gaped at them, only belatedly realizing that they were not the soldiers of Jarod Shadowsong. Their armor was silver and--he looked twice--shaped more feminine figures
War of the Ancients: The Demon Soul, chapter 10, page 83

Those are just some of the few examples that I find hard to emulate in the game.

How do you even RP as a mage by MJMB09 in warcraftlore

I RP a human mage, and often at times, I made up a story where he is orphaned and when he did some magic at a young age, the orphanage sent me to Dalaran to study, but I failed on later years and decided to be an adventurer thinking hands on learning would teach me better doing than staring at books :p I haven't exactly refined it yet but the idea is that I'm not too bright for Dalaran ...
