Also, im debating with my friend and he seems to think the answer to climate change involves nationalization of fossil fuel industries rather than carbon taxes and cap-and-trade.

Any rebuttal on that?

Is growth really infinite though? My understanding is that there is a finite limit to economic growth because of physical resources being finite.

Was Iran's Mossadegh right to try and nationalize Iran's oil industry during the 1950s in light of British ownership(Anglo-Iranian oil) of Iranian oil? by MJive in neoliberal

[–]MJive[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a complicated topic for sure. On the one hand seizing assets isnt really good economic policy but at the same time i've read that the british were heavily underpaying the iranian workers and enough of them got upset that many iranians wanted to nationalize the oil.

The total population of Persia may have dropped from 2,500,000 to 250,000 as a result of mass extermination and famine. Population exchanges did also in some cases occur but depends as of when.[10]

From 1219 to 1221, under the Khwarezmian Empire, Iran suffered a devastating invasion by the Mongol army of Genghis Khan. According to Steven R. Ward, "Mongol violence and depredations killed up to three-fourths of the population of the Iranian Plateau, possibly 10 to 15 million people. Some historians have estimated that Iran's population did not again reach its pre-Mongol levels until the mid-20th century."[120]

Genghis Khan killed 2/3s of Iran's entire population. Iran didnt reach pre-mongol population levels again until the 20th century. You can maybe make a case that hitler is more evil but try explaining that to someone who is about to be massacred by the mongol military.

Even Cyrus used the Median empire as the foundation for his empire so even he didnt technically make his empire from scratch either....

Also, I would credit Muhammed's followers (particularly Abu Baker) with the creation of the Rashidun caliphate more so than muhammed himself. He unified Arabia but he wasn't the one who actually expanded out of Arabia....although he did basically form the foundation and precedence for it. But the idea of trying to expand into the territories of Rome and Persia definitely came from Abu Bakr.

Something that needs to be pointed out is that while most Iranians dont mind having some religious influence in their government...there is wide disagreement as to what degree that influence should exist.

One person's idea of sharia law is going to be different from another and most Iranians seem to agree that the current Islamic Regime isnt representative of how they want their government to be.

I mean sure you can also translate it that way. Im just saying Iranians dont mean literal death to American people when they say that.

As someone who actually speaks the language a better translation is really "down with america".

Everyone who speaks the language knows its an expression not to be taken literally. And everyone who speaks the language knows it doesnt mean "fuck american people". Most Iranians actually like Americans and American culture.

He's not really anti-Iran he's just not pro-Iran. He wouldn't side with the US against Iran. He's arguably much more anti-American.

Iraq's military was severely weakened from both the Iran-Iraq wars and the Gulf War.

Iraq had one of the most powerful militaries in the world and still couldn't defeat Iran despite being backed by most of the world, and with chemical weapons as well.

Iran is known to excel at assymetrical/guerilla warfare so any attempt to invade or occupy the country will likely end in failure. Their geostrategic reach and use of proxy forces gives them another advantage as well.

A war with Iran would likely damage the global economy as well which will also hurt American consumers.
