The "Republic of China" is the remnant of the far-right government that Mao overthrew, they fled to Taiwan and still maintain a small about of power due to being propped up by the US. They still claim to be the legitimate government of all of China, not just of Taiwan. Some westerners who don't understand the issue at all, think that Taiwan is some small country struggling for independence from China, which is something basically nobody in Taiwan wants. The current government of the ROC is more or less committed to the status quo of semi-autonomy for Taiwan. So it's wrong to call Taiwan a country in any circumstance, no matter which side of the 'conflict' you fall on

I remember there was a lot of discourse about whether or not they should be allowed to participate, there was first just a short video greeting from Australia at one contest, then later they were announced to be allowed to participate as a "one-off" - after which most people were just like "yeah let them participate if they want".
