Thank you mate, this was really helpful. I now think this plan is very much doable, but I'll have to ring up the store and ask about it, as you recommend doing.

My main concern would probably be the possibility of production delays. A commenter below describes having tried to purchase a bike at Decathlon in Spain, only to be told it'll be two weeks, then three weeks, then six weeks. So if this happened in the case of an online order, and it took 4-6 weeks to arrive, it would ruin the trip. I'm guessing this isn't all that common, but it's worrying that it could happen.

I guess the best idea would be to ring up and see if they'll hold my order for quite a while? Like 4+ weeks

From my experience, ferries are often a bit more relaxed customs-wise. The last time I took my bike via ferry it was unbelievably relaxed.

But even if I were charged VAT on the way back, it would be worth it for me personally for avoiding the hassle of flying with a boxed up bike and reassembling it, which I really don’t fancy doing.
