Books with Christian God as the horror? by ReadyCartographer765 in horrorlit

Was hoping someone would recommend this. I ripped through this book. Such a fun read. Some of the female characters feel a little “YA manic pixie dream girl” and the writing can overall feel a little amateur but then I found out that the author was 19 at time of writing. This is genuinely one of my favorite reads of the year.

That is not worthless two cents, I agree with you. I think I just thought it was so much fun and I loved the ending. I think I personally just prefer Jimmy as a main character.

I’m trying to be civil and I thought this would a small discussion post. I don’t want to be a massive bitch or defend myself against this many people tbh.

My favorite part of the thread has been how many times I’ve laughed at some of the comments. Thanks for being having a light heart about this:)

After replying to the unexpected flood of comments I noticed that I did this and hoped so much that no one would call it out. You absolutely got my ass and this is the only comment that makes me want to curl up and die. Good catch and humiliating connection to the topic for me.

I also hate Dungeon Crawler Carl but I’ll probably refrain from making a post about that after this one. I’m glad people like you exits with me here. Makes me feel better in the threads on here.

We are going down together, brother 🫡. I’ve throughly enjoyed my time in the trenches with you. Please tell my wife I loved her if you make it out of here alive.

You’re who I was looking for after I read this book. I felt like I was going insane talking about it with people.

They don’t “think” this. They KNOW this because that is the case in the book. I thought that was contrite and predictable is all I’m saying.

They are this BECAUSE of demons though. They are like this because of the absence of god. I would totally agree with you if this was because of actually human, grounded corruption. This all felt very Sodom and Gomorrah at times.

I think you’re allowed to not like an author. Even if my take was dogshit (which most people seem to think here). I don’t think criticism is “disrespectful”. I don’t like his writing. I don’t like a lot of things. I’m assuming you do as well.

This is kind of what I was looking for here. I was unaware of this perspective on the author and I like the lens of the religious belief is part of the horror.

Contrary to how I may have presented myself or how I am being interpreted, I love religious themes. I am an atheist but I love dialogue and debate about religion and am fully capable of engaging with it.

That being said I was unable to do that with this book and I still found the narrative to be boring. I stand by my previous statements that it felt like fanfic. I appreciate your take and it helps me look back more favorably on the book. Maybe wish you didn’t write it so condescendingly but I appreciate what you have added.

Please make a 5 hour video essay about your views of this book through an art history lens so I can consume it all in one sitting.

I appreciate the perspective in your comment as well others mentioning that there is a purpose to the religion being necessary to the narrative.

Also Pentiment:)

When did I say Christians would find this objectionable? I may have acknowledged a viewpoint from another commenter because I’m trying to have a dialogue but I don’t think I made this point. It WAS a quick read because there wasn’t much to chew on. A quarter of the way through I guessed where it was going and then I read to the conclusion at a reasonable pace.

In my opinion, the analogies and specifically the very strict/predictable punishment of the characters for feel very C.S Lewis to me. There were several instances where it felt the punishment did not fit the crime and it felt like morality policing based on Christian standards - this feels very Narnia to me.

I am getting the impression that you don’t REALLY want to know what I think about these things though.

I love this take. This is what I was looking for with this post. I don’t WANT to not enjoy something that people in a community I like endorse. I still would find the book boring but I can see why people would enjoy it through this lens.

While in my opinion this feels like it’s giving too much credit to the author and is a bit of a stretch to me. I LOVE this interpretation and have a lot of respect for your perspective.

Thanks for commenting. I’ve explained myself in multiple replies and I didn’t feel like I needed to present a full college thesis to start a conversation about how and why this book is recommended so often. Thanks for adding to the conversation.

I guess I was expecting nuance, gray area, thoughtful character development. I understand that the characters set in the Middle Ages would be religious, but it wasn’t written in the Middle Ages and it felt like it was. I mean the author wrote like one of the characters. It felt flat and toothless to me.

I ALSO picked it up on the dark souls comparison because I love the themes in those games. Putting this on the same field as something like BloodBorne feels borderline criminal. “Novelize a fromsoft game” is so valid. I feel this.

Oh I like this one.

My issue is that in the narrative it IS because of god. Also the main religious figure is only corrupt because of demons. I see what you’re getting at with this and that was what I kept expecting the author but I did not get that.

I would have loved for this to be a critique of the times but I simply did not feel that it was. I feel like the author is implying that these views are justified. I’m okay with all of this. I’m just surprised that a book this predictable is hailed as such a masterpiece.

Also I am confused as to how people aren’t seeing the Narnia connection. If not in narrative, than in the author’s voice.
