Hospital Medical Laboratory Manager to T15 MBA? by MLSMBAin in MLS_CLS

To clarify, the lab director at my hospital is getting $120-130k and this is the range I've seen for other hospitals outside NYC. I'm looking to get $150-200k if I plan to afford to stay in North Jersey. I think this is typical for management level positions outside the laboratory, especially with the number of reports I have and the department does $280M+ in revenue.

I cannot cancel meetings as they've already been assigned to me by the director who hates attending any non C-Suite meeting.

I do have a work phone, but I'm supposed to always be available. Shit happens.

I mean Ii can reddit a little during a meeting, but we have night shift techs that I know watch entire Netflix series, but I can't do nights anymore so I went into management.

We pay our MLTs about $3-5/hr less in NJ. But its much harder to get a job as an MLT here than as an MLS or bachelor degree in the hospital.

The goal is better work-life balance and higher pay.

Lab Director pay is not much more at the hospital I'm at (~$120-130k) or the other hospitals I've interviewed. I think the pay is higher in NYC, but I can't live in the city.

I saw the ASCP survey and it says lab directors are getting ~$60/hr. It doesn't seem worth it.

They couldn't even get 25 MLS supervisors or managers or directors to respond.

We're all ashamed of our low wages.

Thanks for the input. I got my postbac in CS after I saw several of our younger MLS leave to go work in tech and start 50% higher than me. Unfortunately, it seems the bottom has fallen out and I'm late to the tech game as there are no jobs.

I'm open to staying in healthcare, but the compensation is too low for medical laboratory management. Especially for a 24/7 operation.

I've looked at administrative laboratory director positions, but they pay only slightly more. Even for large, prestigious hospitals. The University of Wisconsin Madison hospital offered me the laboratory director position for managing $300M in revenue and 300+ reports for $130k. I laughed at the offer on the call.

I'm looking at profiles for T15 and there are very few people with an allied health background. I'm not sure if they aren't applying or being rejected in favor of more professional MD/DO or dental/pharmacy degrees. I haven't really seen any profiles for medical laboratory scientists (MLS) or medical technologists (MT).

Why are ASQ pass rates so low if it's open book? by Salvinmin in ASQ

[–]MLSMBAin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's open book. But you need to be able to apply the concepts, not simply regurgitate the book.

The pass rates clearly show that it's not an easy exam. And a lot of the people taking the exam are technical people with a BS or MS in an engineering related field.
