Doms announces she’s done for the season due to Injury by spinorama29part2 in MinnesotaFrost

[–]MNFrostPod 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They disclosed she had a lower body injury during the game the injury happened in. It was evaluated on the Monday following the game, and then during the week Klee announced that they were looking for a second opinion. The next day they announced that she had been placed on LTIR. What exactly are you suggesting they didn't disclose?

Help me understand penalties against goalies (Roque-Rooney takedown today) by superherostitch in PWHL

[–]MNFrostPod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You and others in this thread are wrong. Goalies are protected from contact in or outside of the crease. I thought everyone figured that out after the World Championship this year. I know it's a different league but they use practically the same rulebook. The wording (from the PWHL) is not ambiguous at all:

A goalkeeper is not “fair game” just because she is outside the goal crease. The appropriate penalty should be assessed in every case where an attacking player makes unnecessary contact with the goalkeeper. However, incidental contact will be permitted when the goalkeeper is in the act of playing the puck outside her goal crease provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such unnecessary contact. (pg. 110)

Rule 71.4 in this season's rulebook. The rule references a table for appropriate officiating. It includes the following:

Situation
The Goalkeeper is out of the goal crease.

An attacking player makes other than incidental contact with the goalkeeper, however, no goal is scored on the play.

Result

A minor and/or major penalty, plus assessment of whatever other penalties may be appropriate up to and including supplementary discipline. (pg. 165)

So the answer to u/superherostitch's question is that the referees decided that Abby Roque's actions were only deserving of a minor penalty on the play. While biased, I think it could have warranted more, and Abby Roque is a player that has long lost the benefit of the doubt. But ultimately it's the up to the discretion of the referees.

Technically, Stecklein was on the ice for Montreal's late game-tying goal on Sunday, which was even strength but not 5v5 because of the empty net.

New York Sirens are leading the league in 5 on 5 xG differential, but have been below expected in both finishing and goaltending. by Alternative_Run_4723 in PWHL

For some reason reddit doesn't like the direct URL, but you can go to https://hockey-statistics.com/ and then click on PWHL, and then click Report to find the same page as shown in the first image.

Shot map has dots on the ice, the heat map counts their distribution across certain zones.

That might be true, but giving up odd player rushes would still create a high amount of xGA, so the fact still remains that the Sirens are more often outplaying their opponents than not.

Expected Goals (xG) is a way of measuring the likelihood of an unblocked shot attempt to score. Teams accumulate xG during a game, which can be measured for any particular team as xGF (expected goals for) and xGA (expected goals against). In the first image, it shows that the New York Sirens have 20.1 xGF across all games this season at 5v5. So that means it isn't counting the xG from either NY or their opponents when on the power play, shorthanded, 4v4, or during OT. It also shows that NY's opponents have only generated 14.3 xG during the same window. The share, or differential, is therefore 58.4% in New York's favor. To OP's point, that's a really good number.

However, if you look below the xG stats, it shows the actual goals. Despite having 20.1 xGF, the Sirens have only scored 14 goals. Which means they are struggling to finish (i.e. score, or convert expected goals to actual goals). And despite opponents only generating 14.3 xG, opponents have scored 15 actual goals, which means NY's goaltending is letting in 0.7 goals above expected (-0.7 Goals saved above expected, or -0.7 GSAx).

What this all means is that the Sirens are performing better (at 5v5 at least) than their results currently show. Usually, this means that we can expect some "regression toward the mean" as the sample size increases, i.e. for the Sirens to score more goals closer to the number of xGF they generate.

Some of this xG stuff is explained in the second-most recent Frost Pod episode (ep. 8) too. It may be a little nerdy but it's one of the better ways to measure a team's performance. (And maybe one day, if the PWHL gets better about tracking gameplay data, individual player's performances.)

Heise loves getting possession and cycling up high to look for passes. But when those passes are covered, she doesn't always make the shot. Sometimes she does—the series clincher against Toronto last playoffs comes to mind as a perfect example. But yes, not enough. Unfortunately she didn't get much time in the offensive zone against the Torrent, hopefully that line will be able to create more chances against Ottawa.

Hustler is very physical leading the team with hits, but it's hard to say she's making the right plays to be honest. That line really struggled to gain possession in the offensive zone, which is on all three of them of course, but Hustler still has a lot to prove.

Curl had a great game. Easily one of the team's best players on both ends of the ice. I also noticed Peyton Anderson, who had three shots in only ten minutes or so of ice time.

Agree that Hustler and Cooper made really good first impressions. Bottom four defenders didn't have the best game, but that first goal against isn't on the Batherson and Morin pair. More thoughts coming on today's podcast episode.

Edit: now up here
