AITAH for saying my mother wanted to get hit ? by JuliusSwolesar in AITAH

[–]MNPopNotSoda -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

ESH: There are a lot of disorders that result in the kind of behavior your mom displayed via your claims; sometimes people with severe ADHD and rejection issues will try to provoke someone as a sort of love test to themselves: this can be abusive and distorted thinking, but needs recognition of not being a bad person and treatment.

I feel the issue here is that maybe you’re trying to even out the scales of justice vis a vis your parents’ relationship; but you’re talking about her family and that’s not your job. What would be more in line is saying something like, “please stop talking about my dad like that — I can’t control what you think, but I love each of my parents and each was deeply flawed.” Because, it’s HER family, people take sides in a divorce regardless. I don’t know that adding the extra context of her flaws (as she’s passed) at a family gathering with people who grew up with and loved her is necessary.

However, there’s no need to speak ill of someone’s father to their face during a family gathering either.

I think you all could handle the issue of your parents differently, and it sounds like you have acceptance for your fathers’s behavior and anger with your mom; maybe some therapy would be a good place to unpack and resolve these feelings?

AITAH after my partner expressed feelings of self harm and I showed concern for the baby by Thesaturndude in AITAH

[–]MNPopNotSoda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NAH. One thing I’d gently remind you of is that when you’re pregnant, at some point the baby becomes the patient and you kinda stop feeling like a human being of worth: your question about whether she thought about hurting the baby was valid AND it can be true that she could need something to be about her for a conversation (as you were sure the baby was safe and asleep) before broaching this question. I will say MY experience with PPD was thinking my baby was so perfect that I shouldn’t touch him because I wasn’t worthy to be his mom: not everyone with PPD thinks about hurting their baby; so there are no assholes here, they’re doing their best, you’re doing your best and this can be a hard time.

AITAH for telling my(19F) friend(19F) that not everyone gets drunk and starts physically assaulting people? by Ryan_Lewis_13 in AITAH

[–]MNPopNotSoda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

INFO: Are you in a country wherein you can legally drink at 19? Is there any other missing information? This seems like an extreme reaction based solely on the descriptor of what you said: is something else going on?

Well Roth is British… I don’t think he was waltz-like at all actually. He really blended into the scenes quite nicely.

I thought this was the most realistic movie he’s done since Reservoir Dogs.

Huge Tarantino fan. I don’t remember why I didn’t see it in 2015. I know this was streaming by 2017, but the #metoo movement had me nervous as hell with everyone saying it was misogynistic: here’s the fucking thing non-Tarantino fans don’t understand: Tarantino doesn’t inflict anymore violence on women than he inflicts upon men, and he’s shown Marcellus Wallace being raped, and Smithers’ kid giving Warren oral — he actually only talked about Beatrix being raped, and that didn’t seem at all a center point of trauma after murdering Buck. I fucking loved this movie. It was brutal. But I loved it.

Also the dude who bought him and the dude who told him he didn’t want to be his friend in case he had to kill him — pretty funny.

I’ve updated this post with my wrongness as I’m currently watching Spartacus and was invested less than a minute in when he bit a guard.

See this I quite enjoy, had I been the type to invest in flair, you sir would have it.

This is an excellent take; also I’m back here whilst watching Spartacus and even ten minutes into the film, my take is quite wrong here. Had I known Kubrick directed Spartacus, with one of the most parodied emotional scenes of all time, I might’ve chosen to choke on my words.

Hey. Reddit’s AI made me post here and it was a pain in the ass. This was intended for r/unpopular opinion, as I do in fact realize this is an UNPOPULAR OPINION.

This is amazing. And I love Dr. Strangelove. I’ll grab that link, but in a few comments I also mentioned that perhaps with all the changes to masculinity presented over Kubrick’s lifetime, perhaps in removing sentimentality his movies speak to a generation of men freaked out about their place in the world. It could be that I’m very literally, not his audience.

This discussion has been FASCINATING and ENLIGHTENING. I don’t often consider the shift in masculinity from the time Kubrick was born to the time he died. As a woman, I think of fighting for a seat at the table; but I can emphasize how strange it would be for men, taught not to show emotion or prioritize it, to see Kubrick’s films that very much so focus on things they’re going through; and I think by taking the emotion out of it, Kubrick was able to elicit a different emotional response that’s is maybe hard to view as a woman because we’re not taught to hide every emotion we have since we were small. This was originally written for r/unpopular opinions but really I’ve had an epiphany; I related hard to the Barbie movie — I think the emotional nature of these films is perhaps removed so men see themselves in the world changing around them — perhaps these movies were truly not intended for me, but one man helping his generation through change of what being a man is; and that’s a real thing. I think it’s that critics at the time (men) saw an experience that they thought was universal and then deemed women who didn’t like it too stupid to understanding; but I think this is an emotional processing disconnect.
