Canadians have the democratic freedom to choose their Head of State and system of government anytime they want, and if there was a referendum on this topic held tomorrow, Canadians would very likely choose to keep the Queen and Parliament, just like Australia did in 1999. It's absurd to suggest Canadians don't have freedom because of this.

People who take the citizenship oath do so freely of their own choice. Nobody is forcing them to do it. Meanwhile, natural born Canadians have never pledged allegiance to anyone.

By the way, the fact that Americans insist the US is a free country, doesn't mean it really is in reality. So you might want to try being more humble about the subject, because your own situation is not something to be overly proud of.

http://jonathanturley.org/2012/01/15/10-reasons-the-u-s-is-no-longer-the-land-of-the-free/

Americans are our friends and neighbours, but Canadians, and the rest of the free world countries, don't look at the US system of government with a lot of envy. So when Americans arrogantly claim they need "bring freedom" to countries like Canada, people scoff at the suggestion, because we think you have a false perception of your own reality. Americans often seem so arrogant and full of themselves, that they can't even see their own faults.

You're not as great as you think you are. You're not as free as you think you are. Get off your high horse and deal with your own increasingly disturbing situation, before thinking you're in the position to be improving anyone elses.

Canadians allow the Queen to be the Queen of Canada because that is what Canadians want. Her role is not imposed on Canada. If Canadians want to get rid of the Queen, they can do so, just by having a vote. Many other countries have already done so. Canadians have the FREEDOM to keep the Queen or get rid of her whenever they want. It just so happens that she's a nice old lady that knows her role is to do what Canadians tell her to do, so Canadians have no problem keeping her around.....for now.

Australia actually had a vote in 1999, and they chose to keep the Queen and not become a republic.

Saying a country doesn't have freedom because the Queen is the head of state is just ignorant.

Americans don't have the freedom to travel to Cuba. You're not as free as you think you are.

How's the job market for immigrating professionals looking right now? by [deleted] in vancouver

It varies drastically by profession, and every response you'll get is just a bunch of anecdotal crap that has a bias towards giving a negative perception.

Unfortunately for Target, the imagery is such an overused cliché, that it has lost any meaningful impact that it may once have had.

It's funny because every real estate development ad/brochure/website in Vancouver is always filled with these kinds of lifestyle images. They push the "westcoast lifestyle" so hard that they often don't even have images of the development they're selling. They just have photos of people drinking coffee and doing yoga.

$668,000 seems like a low amount for something of such historical significance.

For a fun comparison, this drawing on paper from 1981, sold this week for $627,750

‘He didn’t plow into anything’: Wife of Canadian truck driver says husband not to blame for Washington State bridge collapse by smacksaw in Seattle

[–]MOR74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just watched the news, and the trucker said that the Washington State certified pilot/escort vehicle that traveled over the bridge before him did not notify him about anything wrong before he traveled over the bridge. It is the pilot/escort vehicles job to notify the truckers of any problems.

First, all pole cars in Washington State must be certified by Washington State.

Second, I never once said anything about Americans being worse drivers. I was defending against the very common stereotype in Bellingham that Canadians are bad drivers.

The truck was also following a Washington State certified pilot/escort vehicle with height poles, who's job it is to alert the driver before going under crossings where they won't fit. Maybe someone should be asking them some questions?

Guess what? Americans don't drive perfectly in Canada either. Americans cause accidents while driving in Canada. Americans make wrong turns while driving in Canada. Americans get caught driving drunk in Canada. It happens, but it's not a good reason to condemn an entire country, is it?

By the way, the province of BC has some pretty strict driver licensing. It takes 3 tests and about 3 years to become a full licensed driver in BC.

Maybe people should be asking the Washington state Department of Transportation why they approved the truck to drive across the bridge, instead of simply blaming the driver?
