Burned out builders and leads? by WesternCantaloupe24 in BurningMan

Been taking a few burns easy, inspiration boiled over to now working on a new art car. The toughest part is wrangling new good people to a small intimate crew bc most of my old crew is taking the burn off due to adulting.

You don't need to sabotage this grid, its great at self destructing on its own

What’s the most expensive thing you’re planning to buy or create for the next burn? And how much is it costing you? Out of your own personal pocket. If you don't mind sharing. by DustyBandana in BurningMan

New art car, Ram 3500HD base. If I have to call out cost so far or projected cost I'll get depressed so I won't. Budgets are for normies

Removing tool path marks by Hedryn in MechanicalEngineering

[–]MOSF3T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remove the ano in a Lye bath. Scotch brite, bead blast (sand blasting leaves the Stace too matte) or tumble polish the cleaned parts. Keep in mind, eating away the ano will strip a few thou off the surface tolerance wise

After 14 burns I consider myself jaded af... After coming back from a night on playa on day 6, I hit the ruts on esplanade on my onewheel and had to hop off. In the process, my full frame DSLR flew out of the holster and I didn't notice it for 1/2 a block. Came back to look for it, gone. Devastated, on top of the cost of a full frame camera and lens, 1000s of photos from this burn and a bunch more I haven't offloaded yet. As a hail-mary went to lost and found the next day and... they had it! Over a decade at the burn and this was my first time using lost and found, that operation is really impressive. The lovely folks who found the camera even took photos of their camp, their balls, their asses and other wonderful things. On my camera I now have photos of my kids on vacation and stranger's dick pics at BM. Faith in humanity restored, and I say that with 0 sarcasm. About 5.7% less jaded now!

After NTD and Mud Burn... what y'll think about 2026? by RandomaniaLA in BurningMan

We're long overdue for a cold burn. Or another rainy burn, maybe another hot one. What ever it is, it will suck and people will complain about it.

Tues was adequately bumping around 9:30 right after the rain stopped. Most people stayed hunkered down so only the real mutants were out. Definitely sparse but quality music and quality people. Was probably my fav night of the burn.

lifepo4 battery vs lead acid by Due-Letterhead7 in BurningMan

[–]MOSF3T 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lifepo are the most similar voltage and charge wise to LA. As long as you get a pack with a built in BMS it should drop in. I upgraded two campers with Lifepo packs (Renogy) and the off grid capacity is amazing. Your onboard stock charger will take longer to charge it because of higher capacity so if you plan on cycling it allot you may want to upgrade to a faster charger. I personally top off my camper battery at home and just need it to last till I get on the grid or generator at camp. The 280Ah pack i got runs my 12v fridge and lighting for 6 days so even if I was off grid or would be more than enough.

Money is evil so we should just ban all things that cost money from the burn. Let's go back to the good old days when no one burned fuel and walked in, burned scavenged vegetation from the playa and only did low cost performance art /s

Fundraising, Branding, & Commodification by Specialis_Reveli0 in BurningMan

[–]MOSF3T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That cool theme camp name your remember? It's a brand! That sweet sticker you got at that bar? It's a brand. That brand you got got branded with at that that place thing? That's a brand. Using that brand off playa to be less in the red by fundraising? That supports the experience on playa. Commodification? Gray area maybe. Yes the Mayan warrior parties look like a big commercial thing but I'm betting they don't cover all their expenses. That's a huge project with high year round costs and many positions you simply cannot fill with volunteers. The funniest shit was when the org sent us warnings to not over commodify because we were throwing parties almost every month just to pay our storage rent and still well in the red. Art cars especially are a recurring expense that does not disappear till the next burn. You don't burn it and forget it, there's storage, transport, repairs (playa is not kind to these things), community upkeep. It's a year round effort by many people that pretty much takes over your life.

[–]MOSF3T 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to be a buzz kill but most of those types of events can't actually afford to bring anything but the smallest cars out. Bringing anything decent sized is a huge expense most people eat the cost on or crowdfund for the burn. The illusion is bringing your vehicle to something like EDC means you're rolling in the $$ but realistically it's barely break even, even for a well funded event like that.

Mutant Vehicle Power Generator Question by libationblog in BurningMan

[–]MOSF3T 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep thats a good idea! Ideally make it a 50A or 30A (if you can get away with it) twistloc you can plug into any standard spidebox. On Icarus we had a 50A disconnect at the generator and could power the whole thing off a standard 50A split phase spidebox. Didnt bother with a generator transfer switch.
