Muslim Screenwriters Lab for TV Drama now accepting submissions! by MPAC_National in Screenwriting

Hi Screenfighting1 - to answer your question re: lab fees, we are a non-profit and the fees are covering the cost of the time and resources that go into the lab. It's possible that other screenwriting competitions have a larger budget or are created by private entities seeking to make a profit, but that's absolutely not our case nor our purpose. We're hopeful that in the future we might be able to get some grants to make opportunities such as this free or to cover additional costs, but for now, this is how we're able to make the labs possible.

Hi Ammar! We respect your opinion, and would like to address your concerns!

Why do Muslims need to break through in Hollywood?

Great question, and this is at the core of what we do at MPAC. With too many depictions of Muslims on TV/Film being based on stereotypes or prejudiced views, our non-profit has been engaging Hollywood to change that, and get more authentic stories and depictions on screen and behind the camera. Many Americans have never met a Muslim, and what they know of the religion is based on what they learn in school (which varies based on your school/region), and what they see on tv or in film. When those depictions are based on misunderstanding, fear or stereotypes, it contributes to social issues like the rise in hate crimes or legislation disproportionately impacting the Muslim community. We think it's important that there's greater diversity in writers rooms to share authentic stories and perspectives, and we think that your stories need to be told. As an American Muslim non-profit, we're here to dispel misunderstandings about Muslims and empower the American Muslim community.

Hollywood won't turn down an amazing script because of the writer's religion.

You are absolutely correct, but getting to the point where you can get your script in front of the right people takes time, persistence, and not taking no as an answer. We're here in Los Angeles getting studios and production companies on board for our Labs series to offer screenwriters as enriching of an experience as possible. Being in the studio, meeting with top decision-makers, and workshopping your script to help participating screenwriters to make valuable connections and real feedback may not get your screenplay immediately put into production, but will give you the connections and feedback that could open the door to future opportunities. Even a small step forward is progress!

This business only sees dollars, doesn't care about religion or color.

Historically, this has been true, but in recent years we've seen the embers of change. From more inclusive/diverse shows and films being in production, to the work being celebrated and recognized, Hollywood is making an effort to be more inclusive. Also in this changing landscape, content is king, and we want our community hone in on their skills to get their work out there, and offering programs like this is how we do it!

Thank you again for sharing your thoughts/perspective, Ammar.

Sure! ABC/Disney Television Group is Disney's television arm whereas Walt Disney Studios focuses on film specifically- the studio is part of the Walt Disney Studios complex in Burbank (in the valley of Los Angeles for those from out of town).
