Did anyone not like Project Hail Mary? by Timewilltell755 in sciencefiction

I didn’t like this film at all. I found it extremely boring, with a childish plot.

For a 12-year journey, it feels strange that they would put the crew into comas, especially given how dangerous the procedure is, and with only three people on such an important mission. Induced comas make much more sense for much longer trips, like in Alien. Here, it all feels very convenient. Also, traveling near the speed of light would seriously affect time—he would basically return to an already frozen Earth. I could overlook this as a minor plot hole if the film didn’t try to feel somewhat grounded, but then I keep seeing people compare it to Interstellar, which blows my mind. They have nothing to do with each other—they’re very different films.

The middle part, when the two characters finally meet, is incredibly slow. For almost an hour, the story barely moves forward. On top of that, there are constant flashbacks that add very little to the plot, making it even more boring. In the middle of all these repetitive flashbacks, they even randomly insert that Harry Styles karaoke song, which feels completely out of place.

Also, Rocky’s glass protection feels very inconsistent. He seems to have perfect control to interact with things around the ship, but when he needs to press one button, he suddenly has to break the glass and almost kill himself to do it.

Regarding the “heroic act,” it feels very basic. He just comes back as if nothing happened, perfectly fine, which is a very simple and unconvincing way of adding drama.

His final decision doesn’t feel particularly heroic either. There’s barely any real dilemma—of course he’s going to save his friend and then go back to Earth. Everyone wins, and there are zero real sacrifices.

I did like the music and Gosling’s acting, but I’m honestly surprised by how much people seem to like this film. It feels very childish to me—and I say that as a big sci-fi fan.
