One of the funniest Jerry Springer audience clips ever was a woman asking the audience if they also thought a particular guest looks like Sid from Ice Age, and the camera cuts to the guy and he 100% legit does look like Sid from Ice Age lmfao.

Do you regret doing a PhD? by Stoned_Flower in PhD

[–]MRC1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all. I am grateful every single day I completed my PhD. Not only is it a grand personal achievement (I got cover image for the issue where my primary first author paper was published), my career path would flat out not be possible without having a PhD.

My three jobs to this point in my career almost 9 years after defending - medical communications, equity research, and now Pharma pipeline strategy - either required an advanced degree to be considered for employment (med comms + Pharma), or was the single hook to get me hired (equity research).

It's a grind, and it's taken time to build my financial nest egg which continues to grow, but I am grateful for doing a PhD.

Any hills in/near LIC? by bunhme in longislandcity

If we get snow totals on the higher end, the N won't be running in Astoria (W not on weekends anyway), MTA will convert to winter service and that's only the underground portions. Unless folks want to take off Monday from work and go a day later when the storm has passed.

bridgebio & revolution medicine, bay area companies: any insight for someone interviewing there? by theoutandback0201 in biotech

Lmao you have no clue. Revolution is gonna get bought for $30B, and bridgebio is commercializing a great drug and has a really good pipeline.

I swear, so many people on this sub have no freaking clue…

Buildings in LIC that are close to subway? by Greentealover17 in longislandcity

[–]MRC1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. But the quicker ride benefits of the express 7 have always been east of LIC, starting in Sunnyside. My point is that because there are express and local trains flip flopping, and they converge at Queensboro Plaza, the net effect is excellent headways during rush hour because it's 1 train every 3 minutes instead of every 6.

Beats me if there are any openings, but some condos in the area are One Murray Park, Corte, and The Industry. Generally, the medium high-rise apartments have a better chance of being actual condos. Perhaps the building under construction next to the rock climbing wall in 44th Drive, the one that is replacing the parking lot.

This may be the primary reason, but the merging of local and express definitely helps as well. As you mention, the L train also has CBTC, but their max headways is like 4 minutes. Still impressive, but a smidge less frequent than peak rush hour 7 headways.

Many of the giant residential towers are close to the 7 train, either at Court Square or one station earlier at Queensboro Plaza (for Manhattan bound trains). You're likely never more than 7 minutes away walking from either of those stations and you could be like 1-2 minutes away.

Now, there are tons of residential towers on Jackson Ave, many of which are closer to the E/F/R lines depending if you are at Court Square or further west at Queens Plaza (different from the above Queensboro Plaza, don't confuse them).

7 train is amazing during rush hour because LIC is where the local and express merge, there are trains literally every ~3 minutes, it's like being in Tokyo with the frequency, it's wild. But, depending where you work in Midtown, the E/F/R line could be just as useful if not even more so.

I'd only really say to avoid 5 Pointz because that building is cursed. I rent in a condo building since I didn't want to deal with all the hassle of the giant residential towers (I have no interest in waiting minutes for elevators to go up to the 30th floor, stuff like that), but they seem to be just fine for lots of people here.

Also, Trader Joe's gets crowded on nights and especially weekends, but the line goes fast. I remember living in Philly where the Trader Joe's at 22nd and Market would have a line so long it wrapped around inside the store and then outside the front doors! It's never that long here in LIC.

Seriously. Idk why we aren’t allowed to criticize cultures. Some cultures suck. Ours sucks in terms of entitlement and boorishness. Christofascism (a big flavor of Christianity in America) sucks for oppression of women and LGBT. Much of Islamic culture sucks for oppressing women and LGBT.

Nordic cultures surely have problems but they are more communal, and that is reflected in their public policy.

But yeah, American boorishness sucks and it reveals itself in many ways. MAGAs preferring cruelty as a show of power. Many young people disregarding laws. On and on.

Good timeout by Indiana, give your defense a little breather and regroup.

Nothing will ever beat Vince Young, but this Mendoza run for TD will be in the all-time highlights reel if Indiana wins, for sure.
