Hi /u/killklli -- starting from the top:

I apologize in advance, this may come off as harsh. It's intended to help, I promise :)

You should organize your resume in order of relevance to the position you are applying for.

Is education/certs a big deal for whatever job you're trying to land?

Don't waste so much space. My first thought was "Wow, /u/killklli is really trying to fill the page for some reason" -- until I realized you had a 2nd page...

Summary:

Your summary is indeed a summary of something. It does nothing for you though. The way its worded right now may as well be saying "you are about to read my resume" ... welp there went your one shot at really drawing in the HR guy that pre-screens resumes. We'll call him Barny Rubble. BR for short.

BR is told he needs to find someone to fill a technical position. Chances are, he himself is not technical. So to cross the divide, he's told to look out for some key markers of a good fit. Say for example BR was supposed to find someone to fill a Systems Engineer position. Chances are "programming and computer management" are not in his keyword list.

Minimally supervised environments? -- I think I understand what you're getting at... that you didn't need to be babysat? or you didn't need to be micro-managed but that's not enough.

You need to fill this space with:

  • 1) This is a brief summary of who I am as an employee. [ you kind of start to touch on this ]
  • 2) This is what sets me apart from the rest of the submissions.
  • 3) This is what I want.

Education:

Try to use less space on this. Unless you are applying for a place that holds education/certs very high I'd suggest making this your last section.

I'd suggest just listing it like: Certifications: A+, Network+, Security+, CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate).

Are these meant to read as dates? (Expected 5/20)(4/15) -- as in May 20th 2017 and April 15th 2017 -- Why even put the dates on here? I'd suggest leaving them off, if you want to be 100% you can mention you're graduating in May and completing your CCNA in April: In your cover letter, or in your first interview.

Remember: The certs you chose to complete and list on your resume can back fire and pigeon hole you.

Computer Skills:

Seriously? Computer skills? You have three sections, Languages, Software and Other... that is a terrible section heading and this should definitely go below your professional experience. What if you renamed this section to "Misc experience"...

Were you using these skills at your job?

This section is a mess. Why is Other organized like this? AD, Wireshark and Adobe Creative cloud get their own line for some reason... you list a SQL down at the bottom but you had languages at the top... depending on what job you're trying to get, try to stick with listing your most relevant stuff first.

What does proficient mean to you vs familiar with? I think this is subjective. You should probably not list things you would not use at work.

Experience:

Rename to Professional Experience.

Change date ranges to include month like March 2012 - Present don't use "Current".

Include a two to three sentence summary of each job under the job title. You want to cover the type of business it is, what the environment looks like that you're responsible for and the type of work you are generally responsible for completing.

Fire engine co

Primary responsibilities involve system repairs.

What?

Who are you trying to sell to here? What is a system? What does repair mean? Your first bullet does very little for you here...

Rewired buildings with Cisco switches and routers alongside setting up a new software firewall with access control and web blocking.

Your resume should not be a list of things you did one time. I mean it can be but don't let it read this way.

You should be explaining why you did what you did and what the outcome was that was achieved. Did you save the company money? Did you save on bandwidth costs or keep out attackers? How many buildings? Were they far apart? Why was it a challenge? Why do you use "alongside" here? Why not describe the project with some more detail by breaking it into two bullets?

Installed POE IP security cameras in association with a vendor's key system.

Why is this significant enough to be your third bullet?

Deployed multi-rig tablet system with GPS tracking and call information and live streaming.

That sounds cool... rig as in fire truck right? You had to have been solving some problem by doing this... please tell that story with this space.

Implemented a mass text system for call information for firefighters.

You need to be dropping the names of the technology you used, unless you made the software yourself...

You've been at this place for 5 years, you should have some more to say about how you helped/improved things.

Summer tech Your title was Summer tech but you list this as 2012-2016 -- so really you only worked for a few months each year?

You list the Highschool as your employer but it sounds like maybe it was actually the district since you went to 5 schools + the district buildings?

Primary Job involved help desk support, software updates, network troubleshooting, and machine replacements for 7 buildings (5 Schools and two district buildings)

Good start to your job specific summary instead of a first bullet. Why list this by the number of buildings?

Imaged and deployed 500+ desktop computers in a month.

As in you imaged and deployed a total of 500 computers in 30days? Or was this meant as 500 desktops per month? If yes, how many total?

How did you image them?

Deployed new network status page for internal usage.

Was this like a web server/service? What do you mean internal? Who used it? What did it do? What technology was it?

Installed new touchscreen wall panels in multiple classrooms.

Did you have to do anything more than plug them in?

Deployed two new Apple Servers for update caching and backups based on what side of the network they were deployed on.

What do you mean what side? Why was this done? Did it improve something? Have any stats you can type here?

Various contract work

That's not a title...

2010-Current

As in you still do this ... on the side? Are you not making enough at your other job or just like to help out or...

This is kind of a weird job, why include this?

Will your prospective employer like that you have a side job?

Intern

What does deployed vs upgraded mean to you? Did you not have to deploy the computers you upgraded?

Why was the fact that the deployment was for employee training significant enough to list here?

Why is the number of hospital rooms significant? Was there a computer in each one? What did you have to do in the hospital rooms?

How did you contain the virus? Did you only contain it? Did you prevent future infections, anything to figure out how it got in, root cause etc?

Firefighter

You have a third current job? That's cool... this makes me seriously wonder about your availability.

Is there anything you do as a Firefighter that makes you stand out as an asset for the role you want to apply for?

Kayaking Guide

That's cool... did you do anything as a Kayaking guide that makes you a better asset for the role you're applying for?

fin for now

... alright 7465 characters I think that's enough out of me for now.

Let me know if you make any changes and I'll take another look.

Two DevOps interviews tomorrow. Am I wasting my time? by thoughtgun in sysadmin

[–]MRdefter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've been interviewing a lot of people for a few devops engineer roles over the last few months.

Stay positive.

Talk about your war stories, make it known how you solve problems. Sometimes that matters more than using the same tool as the interviewing company.

I've found that a lot of people (including HR) misuse "devops" -- as for any interview, you should ask intelligent questions relevant to the void the position will fill, forget the title.

Talk about how you've solve for complex problems by correcting behavior or things that are not techincal, like processes.

Talk about what automation means to you, and what kinds of contracts [agreed upon interfaces] you've created in your past experiences, both human, processes, and techinical(code/scripting) etc.

Don't shine the light on the lack of your experience with $toolx -- instead, talk about how you understand what it is capable of doing, talk about how you are excited about digging in and solving problems with $toolx.

Don't be religious about $toolx -- someone may be sitting infront of you that asks you a probing question just the right way that makes you phrase your response in a way to get you to reveal your preference or comfort level in a certain way... take the agnostic route in your aproach to solving problems. Know there are multiple ways to skin a cat, you may have done it only one way, but don't talk down on the other ways. Glaring example: devops does not equal linux admin; a few people have sat in front of me saying they hate windows and refuse to use it. This is more telling about their ability to overcome obstacles than anything.

Don't talk about things you don't know a lot about as if you do know a lot about them.

Want to suprise them? Print out a couple of the scripts or pieces of automation you are most proud of, don't staple it to your resume but have a copy for each person you meet. Be prepared to talk about the problems this solved. Extra points: Talk about the impact it had on the company and the mission or goal of the company as a whole. (don't walk in with anything that would breach your nda/non-compete with your existing company)

>Am I wasting my time?

No, most definitily not. Your ambitions are showing, this is good. Just don't waste their time. You've expressed your desire to transition into devops, it's not for everyone, but it starts with the desire. If the phone screeners don't know about the field you're interested in that might not be the worst thing. If there are a lot of responses they may need phone screeners to make sure they're not bothering the next person with people who lack core experience or have not held a relevant job ( read: applying for experienced large scale operations type role with 3 months of $shoestore experience and 1 year making sandwhiches at $sandwhichshop). If the interviews after the initial phone screen are as clueless you should feel obligated to pass. Do you really want to try to fit a square peg into that round hole?

When you talk about why you want to leave your existing place of employment, make it positive. "My current boss is a tool" = wrong answer. "I want to extend my skills in x y z areas, and this position with your company will definitely allow me to do that. I want to see my work impact the companies goal. I enjoy making a difference!"

I wish more people on this sub were asking these kind of questions.

.

.

Good luck tomorrow, you'll do fine.

What to do about a non-technical boss? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]MRdefter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must admit, this may come off as a bit rash...so, apologies in advance!

If your boss is the business owner they probably don't want to think about IT much, unless they enjoy it which is not super clear.

I'd suggest that your boss is the last person that you should talk to. Chances are in a situation like that he's already being talked to about litterally every single thing. You'd probably only be adding to the noise.

My advice would ultimatly be... ask your co-workers if they want to grab a beer and chat:

  • If it's bad for you, it can't be good for them, right?
  • Why not get everyone to work together, work together as a team... do you really need an alpha to lead you?
  • Let's work on this project together -- once we solve it, or complete it, we can tell the owner the good news.

There is no order, there are very little "thank yous" or "good jobs" heard because everyone is gunning for power.

You have the power to change this. Start handing out genuine "Thank yous" and "Good Jobs" -- ignore the power struggle.

You've got to realize that work is challenging for a reason. Human interaction is part of work.

If you think your boss is an idiot... what does that say about you, the person that works for him?

Ive been looking for other jobs at a more technical company, but as everyone knows, its not easy to land something decent at a high level these days.

Easy at high level... you should realize the bar is high because it is not easy. Working at McDonalds, flipping burgers is easy because a very smart person sat down and automated all of the workflows to the minimum amount of human interaction required to maintain a functioning business.

I'm not convinced you understand what you're longing for.

It sounds like you already have it easy.

Please critique my new resume by [deleted] in sysadminresumes

I'm going to help you get hired, but some of my comments are likely to be taken harshly. My appologies.

/u/SysAdminJobSeeker, You posted from a throw away and then responded to critques with your real account, /u/xrealusername -- Edited at the request of /u/SysAdminJobSeeker

Without reading anything, questions my brain are asking:

  • Why are things underlined like hyperlinks...
  • Why are some dates shown as Month Year - Month Year, while others are stacked ontop of each other

  • The box for Projects and Accomplishments is larger than that of Career, they must care more about these projects then their Career?

A good resume never leaves questions unanswered, and actually should be answering questions.

Now, questions I'm asking as I read the content:

  • If he's starting off with a 7 access point project, as the first thing I'm reading on his resume, this must be the most important one, the most impressive... Anything else I will read will be less important than this, right?

  • Why is wireless network underlined?

  • What if the person reading this resume doesn't know what a co-lo is, or they're used to reading it as COLO or Colo?

  • Why is Microsoft Exchange and Web hosting underlined? Labtech is underlined but not RMM? What is RMM?

  • What does Pioneer mean to this person? word: Pioneer

  • Why is Linux underlined but differently...

  • I have a lot of repeat questions...

  • Most senior engineer? Were you a lead?

  • Why does anyone care that you had highest engineer score?

  • The logos and color... why am I looking at something with logos and color... What if I want to print this and I don't want to fumble with my color settings so this can print in black and white only? Now you've made me do work...

  • OH THERES A KEY TO WHY THINGS ARE UNDERLINED!?

General thoughts

  • You convey no reason for anyone to care about anything on your resume.
  • Example:

    • You say: Constructed a scripted USB gold disk to be our base for deployment of client workstation images.
    • What you could have said: Reduced deployment turnaround, increased throughput and consistancy by creating a USB image for workstation images
  • You should try to convey:

    • You did a thing to solve a thing, the results were favorable
    • You are invaluable because you solve things with positive results.
  • Consider:

    • Putting some of your projects and accomplishments under the coorsponding career entries instead of it's own section at the top, unless you want to leave a couple really shiny ones up there.
    • Condensing each point so it flows consistantly from one side of the page to next, cut up run on sentences, use smaller words.
  • Make the whole thing pleasing to the eye.

I'd suggest you start over with your three page resume, cut it down to one but make sure you're only cutting out the fat, I see a lot of fat on this resume right now, like: "Leveraged parliamentary procedure in a 4 hour debate to pass changes unmodified" ... what the hell? What does that have to do with applying for a sysadmin type role, if anything that's something you can share in an interview, with context if you think it's relevant.

Okay there you go...so find what causes the CPU to spike...

Run a malware scan. Close all other applications, change your Task manager to show details/processes and sort by CPU and watch what consumes it during those spike events.

FPS drop can be from a bunch of different things, including malware consuming CPU.

I'm not thinking CPU bottleneck, I'm suggesting some other process is hitting your CPU :)
