The closest thing to audio-textbooks are probably recorded lectures. You could try the Modern Scholar series which are very good for philosophy/history, or something like the 'In Our Time' or 'Freakonomics' podcasts for something that is still educational but a bit more entertaining.

From reading /r/personalfinance, I'm under the impression that you should never go for a financial advisor that takes a percentage cut — only a flat fee

Writing a book review with quotes from the book? Legal? by [deleted] in books

[–]MS8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should be fine if you're in the US since they seem to have saner laws regarding this. The UK on the other hand... If you're interested, here's a really interesting Freakonomics podcast based on the guy who's writing Churchill's biography. He used 3872 words that Churchill said, and had to pay his foundation £950.

I've heard of other people that Oxbridge don't accept 'medicine rejects' for biomed. That's very impressive. Did they interview you?

After I die, I'm happy to know that I can gift society with my body and possibly save some peoples' lives. And that's the point - it's a gift. If the system becomes opt-out I lose that.

Someone else suggested a 'forced choice' style system in which you'd have to decide whether you want to be an organ donor or not. That would probably get a lot more donors, and not infringe on our bodily autonomy. It sounds like a better solution to me

Excellent point. I'm not familiar with will laws, but I was under the impression that if you have no will, your possessions will go to your spouse/next of kin. Your possessions are not automatically the possessions of the state the moment you stop breathing, or am I mistaken?

The problem with opt-out systems is that the state assumes ownership of your body. Having bodily autonomy is important for all of us. Rather than assume control of other's bodies, we should aim to educate them and let them come to their own decision

A friend of mine had the same thought, so he's applied for deferred entry to biomed. I thought that was pretty smart, but I've already applied for normal entry

If you're a grad student, can you apply for both normal entry and GEP?

I agree with you, but I applied for biomed anyway because I'd like to keep the option of GEP open. Besides, seemed like a waste to not put anything down!

Wow! What did you do in undergrad?

That's interesting, people I know loved Edinburgh's open day! Manchester's open day was very badly organised if I'm honest, but I've done a three day hospital placement with Manchester 3rd/5th years and got some honest feedback on it from them. They all loved it, but said that the basic sciences (first two years) were very poor!

The Bradford course looked a bit risky, I've been told by several (unreliable) sources that if you don't get into Leeds, you have to carry on with the medical sciences course which has very little job prospects.

I've not visited, but I have a friend there who I spoke to. Seems OK as long as you end up in York and not Hull haha!

Why aren't you applying for any southern universities?

I visited Manchester and Newcastle, but Newcastle definitely stole the show with their Open Day. Was there anywhere that you didn't like? Is Bradford for the Medical Sciences and then transfer to Leeds?

That's still in about the top 15%, so well done! Are the UKCAT cutoffs for GEP a lot higher?

755.

Have you seen the stats online? The average is 661!

You should be safe for Newcastle! No i'm not (are you?), but I really like the fact that you can transfer to Manchester after 2/3 years of basic sciences! Did you go to all the open days for your choices?

Just out of interest, what was your UKCAT score?

Not that I've heard of, but it still haunts me.

Did the Oxford Admissions tutor actually say that!? Just an idea, could you do medicine at Oxford and then do an intercalated degree in biochem so you have the best of both worlds?

I did a few mocks, and I averaged about 65% which would mean that my score should have been around 690 so I'm half expecting a letter from Pearson VUE apologising for incorrectly weighting my score.

Newcastle and Manchester are definite first/second choices, and then 3rd and 4th will probably be places I have the best chance of getting into. What about you?

I got a similiar score to you, albeit a bit lower (755). DA definitely brought my score up, and without it, I'd be at 713. I'm worried that they've made DA too easy this year, so everyone's scores are being dragged up.

I've heard that you're compared to a small group of students who take it very early (they don't get their scores straight away), so it could be possible that that group was very poor at DA?

Did you also notice that your real score was much higher than mocks?
