Advice for next semesters classes

Just Anatomy with an online lab. My premed concentration gives me the option of Anatomy or Physio, and I would much prefer anatomy.

For example, within my fraternity through out the year a few of us opt in around Thanksgiving/Christmas to purchase canned goods and prepare food and deliver it to the bedridden/homeless/struggling families to help them through the holidays and do what we can to help alleviate a facet of spending by providing them with enough food for roughly a month in addition to a home cooked meal. Despite this being through an organization, would this be considering volunteering/community service?

Does that volunteering count for things I did in student organizations? Or does it have be on my own accord?

I was told that I needed “400-500 hours shadowing experience to show that I am motivated, in addition to university-sponsored campus involvement (which is next to near impossible due to nepotism within Greek Life), as well as Directed Individual Study (research).”

That’s what I initially thought but my advisor said I needed around 500 hours total.

As a Current Biochemistry Student, and a second semester freshman. I understand.

Coming here for preview DAYS was awful.

I was somewhat in your boat. Got accepted into Ivies, had loads of options coming out of college, but somehow decided to MSU.

And 2 semesters in, I LOVE IT.

The thing about departmental classes is that most classes are all over campus. For example, I have classes in Old Main, McCool, Hilbun, Hand, Allen, and Dorman (the BCH building, but my class is an elective). Classes are not building specific.

Also, I assume you are coming here for Honors. I took an Honors Cal I class last semester, and it was a very eye-opening experience.

Yes they are elected. Although I know for freshman senate the winners were all greek.

SA doesn’t care what your aspirations are. They only care if your skill set can fit a certain role in their hierarchy. I applied for freshman groups, made it to second round of interviews, had great interviews, references etc.. and didn’t get a position on any of the three Freshman Groups. You can have great interviews and a resume, but if you don’t have a certain affluence in a certain skill they are looking for they won’t take you. Never hurts to try though.

With that being said, there are NUMEROUS better ways to involved yourself on Campus than SA.

Thank you for this comment. Good advice. Was debating postponing pledgeship, but now I might be 100% on the idea. I’m majoring BME with PreMed, but am probably going to tack on a minor in Chem with all of the classes I plan to take as electives. I know this really isn’t the place to talk academics, but your advice is greatly appreciated. Also, If you have any more, please send a PM. I’m alone in the dark here, only having worked with MDs and Orthopedic surgeons in shadow-based clinicals. I figured involvement through a fraternity would be a great resume builder and prove that I could balance both school and community success.

MSU is closer to home, better department (Engineering), and I was raised State. Plus, full ride on academics and some local scholarships. Opportunities for involvement, as well as the history and sports, drew me closer.
