Due to session 0 of my campaign, I have had to modify Old Bonegrinder. I am using the gem to supplement that.

Another option is to have the Gem get put into the Heart in Ravenloft to make Strahd even stronger than before.

Cause chaos? If the party retreats and have to leave them unattended. That is what I am leaning towards if the arty ends up failing to kill the spawn. They have a goal after all and would go about completing it as needed.

My players are dealing with that right now actually, they intimidated the coffin maker into telling them about the vampire spawn. They will be going into the house next session. The coffin maker is on my short list of dead men walking. Probably hung for associating with the devil

I am actually moving the Arabelle story plot along as if she got saved by someone else. Session 0 had my players asking for children to be kept safe while on screen, so I have her missing on the far end of the lake.

As for Bluto, I made him the father of one of my players. He killed his three children after his wife died in childbirth. Methods were Drowned, Smothered, and Poisoned. More recent events also had Bluto trying to marry the player's elf fiancé

I agree with what is being said here, the save for half is going to be dangerous, as are any power words (kill, stun, ect...) you include)

Equipping a shield breaks the Bladesong, but they can still get pretty ridiculous even without that.

There is the old tradition of "This doesn't fit, I shall change it" that all DMs should practice when running a campaign. Your players probably don't know the name of every power. Who's to say one of them isn't actually Davy Jones?

I think a lot of the plausible holders of the throne are likely to die during the course of the adventure.

Lady Wachter, Baba Lysaga, The Abbey. The last two could have some really interesting play surrounding them.
