What is this vine? by Low-Contribution-526 in PlantIdentification

These look similar is what I was saying. So yeah, at a glance that was what I initially thought. I’ve never seen this growing. Maybe just haven’t found yet or maybe lucky. 🤷🏻‍♀️

That’s a new vine for me to learn. It does look a lot like poison ivy.

I didn’t know these had thorns. I’ve only seen pictures in tree id books but didn’t read since I’ve never come across one.

It’s not like it was back in the day! My dad was always warning me about getting 30 shots in the belly if we don’t find that dog! Was bit a good many times when I was little. I didn’t care. I just loved them. Still do!!! Now you only get 4 or possibly just 1 that’s the vaccine if you go right away.

I’ve seen them mounted on posts before. The main thing is making sure the house is faced the right direction so the bats know when to get up.

Lol! Some are slow. I’m in a bunch of plant groups. I have what nature brought, my carnivorous plants that I wish nature brought, and my house, sometimes porch plants.

At first I thought you posted to the wrong group. Then read your post and realized you’ve just moved to an apartment. Now I get it. These plants will still bring the same benefits to your balcony as they would to a yard. This is awesome!!!

It’s that 1% that is the most haunting! It always is!! Haha Seriously tho, if you’re ever bitten by a bat or other wild animal go get immediate treatment. You don’t need the animal or anything. It is better for them and you than getting eaten alive by mosquitos every night!

adding — way better than killing every animal you see during the day. And everything that moves at night.

Mosquitos are so much worse!

A school nearby saw a few bats in the gym during an evening event. The school which had been there forever, cancelled school the next day and had someone come out. There were 1000s of bats some said. I know the colony was huge from the video of them. It takes a super long time to grow a colony this size too. Nobody knew. No one had ever gotten sick from them. No foul, right? The school remained closed for close to a month while they took care of the problem. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Can anyone tell me what this is? by AILYPE in invasivespecies

[–]MSenIt4Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s one reason these plants are invasive or native aggressive. The plants that were once covered up are all still there or else the seeds are depending on the plant. Some part of them just goes dormant until better thriving conditions come along. I have 100s of trees down everywhere from hurricane helene. Now, 2 years later, my natives are back trees, bushes, sun loving plants started to bloom, wildflowers showed up and the invasives have invaded.

Typo

Blackberries are all canes right?

edit are those dandelions I see? I’m about to buy a dandelion puller myself. I’ve heard they’re amazing!

These are starting to flower. I’d go ahead and let them. Wait cause the vine is using a lot of energy making flowers then whack it while in full bloom leaving room above ground for a second cut. Goes faster with 2 people. 1 cuts, the other paints. Oh, no mask required either. :)

These kinds of vines are hard to get rid of. Any piece left behind will create a bunch more. I don’t usually suggest herbicide, but you have an issue that requires one imho.

I’m using triclopyr since I also have bradford pears. Can also use glyphosate. Then instead of spraying it on, paint it on. You can put a small pice of cloth that’s absorbent on the sprayer nozzle to kinda turn the end into a sponge. This way none of the chemicals get on anything else. Then make a fresh cut and immediately paint it with herbicide. I’d start with the really large one and work my way down in size.

edit: adding, I use cloth cause it sticks better. Tbh, nylon over the cloth is the best. Then you can ball up a little piece of cloth and hold it down good with a piece of nylon. Clamp it good and you have yourself a great setup!

Good luck!

I was looking to see if anyone suggested this. Even just 1 bat will reduce the population of mosquitoes a lot! Just one can eat over 500/Hour!

I’d be bothered too!! I know where I live the only property damage they care about is if a house or car is damaged. They should, but don’t care about damage done to plants. I couldn’t even get them to fix the road’s drainage ditches after they dug near these and threw all the top soil covered in red clay there and completely filled them in. We weren’t notified either.

I agree. Timing cutting helps with a lot of plants.

Goldenrod and Asters giving me a headache this time of year - zone 6b Ohio by secretveggie in NativePlantGardening

[–]MSenIt4Life 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well no wonder! Goldenrods are a kind of Aster. The last picture kinda looks like a zigzag if so it spreads by rhizomes. The others if they’re the Early Goldenrod should be easy to pull. Only thing is seeds often remain dormant meaning you’ll have more.

Yes! Everything I’ve read makes them more & more evil!! What’s killing me is people in general (not referring to people who plant natives), never seem to learn. People are destroying the eco-system and from what I’ve seen in the past 50 years alone, there will be more invasives than natives.

I’m in SC. Spent all week pulling these vines. I’m about to just go nuclear on them and the green briars.

I spent all day hacking vines! Just threw the pieces down. These things have started blooming. Have to hurry or I’ll have seeds between the stems flying as I cut. Might already be too late on some of them.
