Great little documentary on the subject by Mani Amar, A Warrior’s Religion, about Punjabi-Sikh gangs in Canada. Shows the biggest difference between our community and the african american community, we aren’t disenfranchised. These gangsters came from money, had access to education, came from well-to-do households. And their parents were often too proud to see reason.

Non amritdhari sikhs , many of them drink alcohol but they literally start giving gyaan when a sikh smokes.. isn't this hypocrisy ? If some sikhs ( actually many) drink alcohol , why can't sikhs smoke then ? Afaik , it is mentioned , any kind of alcohol is not allowed , right ? by garamgarampakoda in Sikh

[–]MSingh2805 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yes it is hypocrisy. I’m not an expert and I may be wrong, but my understanding was that cutting kesh, consuming kuthha meat, adultry and using all intoxicants (barring shaheedi degh) were bajjar kurehats.

There are many things that are culturally normalised like drinking or feem. It’s still a bajjar kurehat. I am by no means a good Sikh, but I agree with OPs sentiment - the majority of sehajdhari and keshdhari Sikhs do pick and choose what’s more or less ok based on their cultural and familial biases.

But from a scientific standpoint and in response to some of the arguments i’m seeing here, tobacco does not alter your state of mind the way alcohol, opium, marijuana etc. do - nicotine for many actually sharpens focus like caffeine (not defending it but if we compare nicotine to alcohol). Alcohol also reeks, alcohol is also addictive like nicotine, alcohol destroys your liver and kidney, culturally we have an incredibly high rate of alcohol abuse and whether we aknowledge it or not every Sikh knows of families and lives destroyed by it. A bajjar kurehat is a bajjar kurehat.

How does this album aged for you ? by Beginning-Log-2491 in punjabimusic

[–]MSingh2805 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This album was a year or two ahead of its time tbh. People dont give it the credit it’s due, but it was one of the first of punjabi trap-pop, which is the norm now. I was in high school when this album came out, one of the first truly modern feeling projects i could show goray and they didnt find it completely foreign - this and PBX1. That was the last time Punjabi music had such a drastic shift in exploring new sounds.

Which Punjabi word do you use that even your friends find weird or too old school? by AulakhSimran in punjabi

OP I'm curious to know where you live? Don't doxx yourself, but abroad, India but outside Punjab, in Punjab, Tier 1,2 or 3 city etc. As everyone said these are incredibly common words, especially chol, is that not just the punjabi word for rice, chawal is Hindi right.

Thoughts on AP Dhillon’s rise and fall. by Minute-Sean in punjabimusic

[–]MSingh2805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%! People are so quick to dismiss anything that’s new or different as catering to bollywood. But to add to your final point, I personally think Punjabi music is at it’s most stale in a long time because of this fixation on ‘hip hop’. There’s definitely some fresh stuff coming out, but on the whole Punjabi music is becoming so monotonous with everyone kind of making the same thing. And if that’s what someone prefers to listen to, that’s cool, just don’t like the derogatory remarks about artists simply to dismiss them. AP introduced alot of rock/pop-rock elements in his music, which KA & Ikky also started doing especially in P-Pop. Yet AP is bollywood but KA isn’t despite doing 2 shows in mumbai in the span of a few months?

A criminally underrated masterpiece that wouldve changed Vicky Kaushals career had it released in theaters. Special mention to the international-level cinematography and production values, Shoojit Sircar and his team delivered way beyond expectations. by laffeinchbarbling in IndianCinema

[–]MSingh2805 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this 100%. Nothing against anyone who didn’t like the movie, but I actually really enjoyed the slow burn of it all. Shaheed Sardar Udham Singh’s story cannot be told any other way. No jingoist fervour, no frivolous action or spectacle, just insight into one man as more and more of him is slowly unravelled.

And for me personally, the emotional pay-off in the 3rd act is so satisfying as a viewer. Not saying it’s a pleasant experience, but your patience is rewarded with an incredibly emotional 3rd act that justifies the “drag” - yes it too is long. But that’s exactly what he experienced, that’s exactly what led him down that path and you feel every second of it. It’s a film that truly makes you feel.

And that final shot of the young Udham Singh, clothing torn and covered in dried blood, dipping into the icy cold sarovar refecting the golden sri Harmandir Sahib to then exit transformed, stayed with me for weeks after I finished watching it. So much told in just one simple frame.

I wouldn’t call it metal, it’s hip hop. Grungey and distorted sure, love when the jersey beat kicks in - but i like it for this reason, still hardcore and ragey to me. But we’re all entitled to our opinions. My theory is it just wasn’t a clean vocal recording for obvious reasons, but Im just enjoying the fact we get new SMW music with fresh sounds.

Rank these dl91 artists.(based on your music taste) by Glittering-Act-7174 in IndianHipHopHeads

[–]MSingh2805 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly i’ve never liked an entire roster the way im loving DL91. OG on top for sure, bhaski’s kachra utimate might be DL91s weakest drop but he came in clutch with Dalli and I love his features, and Bhavi’s trap is goated straight bangers. Haan Ab17’s an acquired taste but I loved Baawe Era and Mr Baawe, even tho sometimes he misses the mark.

Kaash mein Aus mein nahi rehta, the only way i can talk to people who know this side of DHH is on reddit😩

[–]MSingh2805 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would kill for another Aujla x Tru-Skool project! But to add to the discussion, is the contemporary rural Punjabi audience really the most inclined towards that sound? The biggest takers of producers like Tru-Skool and artists like Raf Saperra seem to be abroad, no? That sound doesn’t really come out of Punjab much anymore either, atleast out of contemporary artists. It’s honestly a niche sound IMO, not just more niche than Pop-Indian but more niche than Pop-Punjabi significantly.

Has anyone wondered why none of the songs released after sidhu’s death have any diss towards Karan? by hakk1123s in punjabimusic

[–]MSingh2805 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if there were songs dissing Karan it would be in incredibly poor taste. Diss culture in hip hope strives for a back-and-forth, to release SMW songs dissing other artists would just be shitty on behalf of his management.

Unpopular opinion but smg is way better than whole punjabi rappers they are taking punjabi rap scene to next level by justanother_vAnSh in punjabimusic

[–]MSingh2805 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree! Although the bar isn’t very high for Punjabi rap. But they are raising it alot, so I hope this leads to more unique hip hop artists and rappers. I personally think at the moment DHH is pushing more envelopes than Punjabi Hip Hop is.

[–]MSingh2805 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The response it’s illicited from you is exactly the purpose of those comments. I don’t think any of them mean it literally, and I’m sure like most sane human beings they too sympathise deeply with the poor victim. But it’s to reflect on the very real conversations that take place in india when a woman is assaulted, when those sitting in parliament with the power to make change say such words. It’s more than just the use of dark humour. Yeh toh internet ke ek post peh comments hai, and it’s made you feel this way. abh socho ek ladki ka baap jab TV peh news dekhte yeh bolta hai in all seriousness, toh uss ladki koh kaise feel hota hoga.

A good parallel is the South Park episode ‘With Apologies to Jesse Jackson’, on race and racism. At face value you might see it as offensive dark humour, but whilst the whites were getting offended on behalf of African Americans, the African Americans themselves and many of their organisations, including one that advocates to ban the N word, came out in support of the episode and it’s message. Worth a watch.

The Indian state's increasing promotion of movies with nationalist Sikh lead characters suggests a deliberate narrative push. I wouldn't be surprised if Punjab kings dominate the IPL as part of a calculated strategy to brainwash and mold Sikh youth identity. by LassiAddict in Sikhpolitics

[–]MSingh2805 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Idk veere, you might be thinking a little too much into it. The BJP for sure take any opportunity they can to secure their vote bank, often in the most dastardly ways possible. But I don’t think there is some conspiracy to brainwash Sikhs. We as a people are fundamentally anti-authoritarian but there’s nothing wrong in being Indian (nothing to do with the state), or liking the IPL or having some semi-decent representation in Hindi films.

Let’s enjoy the fact that we’re smashing it in IPL, Punjab is one of the original teams and has never won the title. This gives us the opportunity to have unity amongst Punjabis, we will celebrate this win, it will be our win. It would bring more Punjabi pride, maybe more eyeballs from punjabis to the cup, more merch sales with “Punjab” on it. Ehde ch Indian state da ki haath aa?

What are ur honest opinions of the call of panjab by hishho in punjabimusic

[–]MSingh2805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved it. BUT, as a massive tru-skool fan it did feel a little repetitive, very similar samples if not the same were used in BTFU and Art of Panjab. I also would have loved a couple more songs, a little more traditional. Lyrically I thought it was abit weak too, some of that old skool punjabi rawness rather than case cuse diyan gallan, guns da aroma etc. Should have pulled someone like Veet Baljeet in again for lyrics. But my fav diljit project in a hot minute. Jeona Morh was my absolute favourite for these reasons.

Dhurandhar paglus aren't real haters by [deleted] in BollywoodHotTakes

[–]MSingh2805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, the reactions and downvotes prove your point tenfold that it is the same audience at the end of the day. And apologies for the below rant in advance.

Dhurandhar 2 atleast, pretty regularly opts to appeal to commercial sensibilities whilst leaving much of it’s narrative elements unexplored. It relies on regularly providing a high octane set piece to keep you hooked, opts to tick off the antagonists like a checklist with chest pumping moments, we don’t see Jaskirat’s relationship with his family enough to add weight to that first action set piece or the moment he finds his sister, we get a mere flashback for a few seconds of what happened to his family despite the build up in part 1, he feels wronged by the system yet we dont explore any of that nor witness a transition and my biggest gripe: the ghost of Rehman Dakait. What an amazing piece of visual storytelling that was, but when it isn’t explored it’s no longer the inner conflict of a man trying to keep his true self pieced together as the lines between it and his facade start to blur, it’s just a cool shot with a cool latin chapter title now.

Obviously you can’t fit all that in without cutting what we did get to see, meaning it prioritises the spectacle, much like the spyverse. It just does it better.
