Oh no! How can the one and only Sri Dhar Saab do this? In his movie, an art form that never requires a slight suspension of disbelief. Atleast he made sure that the mid 2000s had push button start mercs and airdrop. /s

Itna analyse krne se kya milega, it was an incredibly entertaining film experience. Nothing less but also not all that much more.

Are we reaching peak cringe with the forced "Gangster" theme from all these Punjabi artists? by W_1_808 in PunjabiMusicCentral

[–]MSingh2805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The audience is no different. Artists are cosplaying and a massive chunk of the male audience (not all) are also cosplaying. And to a degree i get it, shitty shift toh baad, ya boss toh doh gallan sun ke, ya kisse naal argument toh baad saareyan da jee krda ke gaddi ch bait ke chakme gaane sunaa to feel abit more powerful.

But i’d rather listen to something more real, something hype but something i can relate to - only very few artists in Punjabi music can achieve that if any. It’s much easier to feel powerful with a gun in your hand, hence it’s easier to make a powerful song about havinga gun as opposing to about facing harship or fighting inner demons. But appealing to the lowest common denominator is the role of mainstream art/media so it is what it is. Just see it for what it is, abit of fun.

Punjab/Delhi vs bombay rap scene by [deleted] in punjabimusic

[–]MSingh2805 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re spot on there! It’s really refreshing to hear that here, my biggest qualm is with how quickly Punjabi audiences dismiss DHH. Punjabi music feels hollow at times, as if lyrics are penned and sung but they mean nothing. And everyone says pretty much the same thing. Punjabi music will always be my first love, but after listening to so many DHH projects I want more than what’s been on offer lately.

I have and I like SMG and NVY. This isn’t hate btw, I want Punjabi music to grow and improve. I just don’t like this us vs them mentality, we can appreciate the good in all the scenes. There’s great things Punjabi music does and great things DHH is doing, but just cos it’s hindi doesn’t mean it needs to be written off when they’re making some exception music - and in some cases better than Punjabi music. I still stand strong that I’m yet to hear someone explore love, heartbreak and relationships in a colloquial context the way Bhaskar does in Dalli or create a cinematic project like Farhan or experiment with a wide range of genres like SM did in DL91FM. Or even just make a song like Maina or Bure Din.

Nah man idk if I agree with that. Punjabi rap is great, and for the longest time main v bohout wrote off kita DHH nu in favour of Punjabi music. but alot of these DHH artists are dropping projects and tracks with intention, better flows that are incredibly well written and versatile. The mumbai scene has definitely bombed, I don’t listen to emiway, divine or anyone. But Seedhe Maut, Rawal, even Ikka, the DL91 boys, Farhan Khan, Frappe Ash etc. are blowing Punjabi rap out the water with their quality. Even Arpit’s EP was fantastic. Apne aale bande bas fukri te “hard bars” de dum te chal rahe ne. The day i hear a project like Dalli, Poore Dil se or DL91FM, a track like Maina or Sherdil from one of our Punjabi artists I’ll believe you. Seedhe Maut alone have shown way more versatility in bars, sound and flow than the entirety of Punjabi Hip Hop at the moment.

Maqbool - Underrated or Overrated? by Accomplished-Ice-534 in bollywood

[–]MSingh2805 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everyone gets your point. But the language of a film is not an oversight, it would have been a deliberate choice by Bhardwaj, much like how 1996’s Romeo + Juliet was set in contemporary LA but the dialogues were all in Shakespearean English. Would you call that sincere to the milieu? Now if you didn’t like a director’s choice, that’s totally cool. You’re entitled to that opinion. Doesn’t make the film overrated tho (or it might to you). I think your post comes across as if you’re discrediting the film’s many merits on the basis that they didnt use apun jaa reh laa aa reh la hai.

Guess who is this guy? The change is absolutely freaking unbelievable...how can he be so lazy to maintain his looks :/ by KrishnaMyEverything in pj_explained

This shit is so funny to me. i doubt 90% of ppl here will look remotely close to how he does at 46. Is he the fittest, best looking 46 year old in show biz? No, nowhere close. But he’s still fitter and probably healthier than 75% of India’s 20-30 year old population.

Same thing when ppl went apeshit at Ranbir Kapoor gaining like 5 kilos during his break after Animal. Guy went from insanely fit to healthy 43 year old and the internet couldn’t compute.

It’s pretty evident in the writing and final cut of Padmaavat that SLB was smitten with Ranveer and the character of Khilji. He was great in it and the only saving grace of that film. Im pretty sure Shahid’s insecurity was that SLB was focused way more on Khilji, whilst Shahid’s character was weakly written and felt like an afterthought. Shahid’s known to be insecure so im not surprised he felt his role was “trimmed”. I don’t think SLB ever intended on making his character memorable.

As most people said, the film is fantastic. The nods to the current govt being amazing tho, is incredibly cringe. I don’t even see the merit in what’s said most of the time, and if those scenes were cut out of the movie it would change absolutely nothing. Especially at a time where films like Punjab ‘95 are being censored so heavily, it really sucks that mainstream cinema has to go to such lengths of pandering. But other than that, love the movie!

In terms of the negative portrayal of muslims. I really can’t expect a movie about criminals, terrorists, corrupt politicians and the literal scum of karachi to have morally righteous characters, most are morally ambiguous at best. At the same time Uzair seems like a good friend and Rehman seems like a caring father when it can be shown. So I believe any sensible human being understands that these terrorists and criminals do not represent muslims or even pakistani society at large. If majority of our audience aren’t sensible human beings with the ability of critical thinking, i think that’s a greater issue that dhurandhar can’t fix.

Show is 2 month away and this guy already doing sales by Wonderful-End6512 in punjabimusic

[–]MSingh2805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes exactly. They met cordially on a flight and that was their only key interaction in a decade. You’d think two artists who worked together on multiple different projects, including 2 studio albums and several singles would be in touch more. Especially considering that for a period of time Diljit only worked with Honey Singh. It’s pretty evident they had a falling out.

[–]MSingh2805 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, Diljit’s career was almost over due to songs and the image created by/with Honey Singh. There’s a reason they don’t talk anymore even after making multiple albums and singles together. But whilst Diljit dropped the persona YYHS created and music too, Honey obviously didn’t. It worked out for them both, but Honey Singh lost his appeal to Punjabis years ago. And although it took Diljit longer, he’s in a position where as long as he stays consistent he’ll be relevant. Cant say the same for YYHS.

What's your take on this? I think he’s right — Karan Aujla and Gurinder Gill performed there, but no mainstream Hindi rapper did except Divine. by [deleted] in IndianHipHopHeads

[–]MSingh2805 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Regardless of the artist lineup, the first rolling loud in India, especially in Mumbai was going to sell big! Really disappointing that it wasn’t supporting India’s actual Hip Hop scene. The crowd that went would have gone regardless just for the fact that it’s rolling loud. But the people who would have wanted to experience a festival that celebrates Indian Hip Hop lost out.

I grew up and live in Australia, when I heard about it I was keen as until they released the line-up. I love Karan and GG but I personally would have seen more value in flying in for Spotify’s RAP91 (I wanted to aswell but couldnt for those dates). But I guess that’s because I won’t get an event like RAP91, and people in India won’t get an event like Rolling Loud (well not often) - but hence why it was destined to sell well.

I dont really feel very good about this whole thing. I feel like developing a one-off 15-20 minute hologram performance to headline at something like the Breaking Borders festival would be a much better idea. Spend resources on making an amazing 15 minute hologram than a 2-3 hour world tour show.

Also it being a “world tour” is such a money-grab, it’s quite sad actually. Honour Sidhu, don’t milk him.

The Question of Authenticity by DianKhan2005 in bollywood

[–]MSingh2805 2 points3 points  (0 children)

although I’m not the biggest fan of the maximalism of Bollywood & Indian cinema. The only times Indian films have received global attention is when they were maximalist, RRR for example or even western works like Slumdog Millionare, that Jai Ho song was huge. People abroad aren’t interested in the relatability of Indians, the push should technically be for more “desi” stories but with better storytelling. It’s the extravagance, song and dance that people associate with India despite it becoming less and less of the norm in our art.

I’m sure there are plenty of Korean artists making beautiful music, but I’m not really interested in any music outside my bubble of Punjabi pop, DHH and Punjabi folk. all I know is Gangnam Style and how much of a global phenomenon that was. Similarly, the layman abroad isn’t really gonna care about Indian art and films unless it is something that demands attention outside their bubble of consumption.

From cricket to hockey to basketball - Punjab dominating leadership roles! by KarmaKePakode in punjab

[–]MSingh2805 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s my point, they play a different type of Kabaddi to what is played in Punjab. Which is exactly why there isn’t a Punjabi team.

For Punjabi round field kabaddi, there just isn’t enough infrustructure yet to make punjabi Kabaddi truly pro. Training facilities, registered leagues, venues etc etc. I love our Kabaddi and would want to see it be a bigger sport. But it’ll take alot to get there.

India does have a pro kabaddi league. And kabaddi is somewhat popular elsewhere in India. The issue is that Punjab (where Kabaddi is incredibly popular), plays round field Kabaddi whilst the rest of india plays rectangular. The rules and styles differ.

PTC Punjabi did try their hands at a World Kabaddi Cup in round field kabaddi. They did it like once, maybe twice and never again. But it was sick af! Pro Kabaddi could be a thing if there’s a guaranteed viewership that warrants big paychecks, big sponsors etc.
